Mr. Jafri is a 44- year- old artist from England. Last year, the coronavirus spread and many countries went into lockdown(封锁;在家隔离). Rather than feeling stuck, Jafri decided to take on a huge project that could “make a really big difference”.
He decided to create the world’ s largest painting. He asked children to send him pictures showing how they were feeling during the pandemic(大流行病). He got artwork from kids in 140 different countries.
The painting is huge—over 1600 square meters. It took Jafri seven months to create the painting. He worked long hours—often up to 20 hours a day. He hurt his back by bending over so much while he painted. It took over 1000 paintbrushes and 6300 liters of paint to create the painting.
Jafri hoped that his painting, called “The Journey of Humanity”, would help bring the world together during a difficult time. He included the children’s drawings in the artwork.
When he finished last September, he had set a Guinness World Record for the world’s largest painting.
The painting was split up into 70 large pieces. Jafri hoped that by selling the pieces, he could raise 30 million dollars.
But when the auction ended on March 22, Jafri did much better than that. And he didn’t have to split up the pieces. The whole artwork was sold for 62 million dollars.
Andre Abdoune, a French businessman, bought all 70 pieces. “The painting was very powerful when I saw it,” Mr. Abdoune said. “And for me, it would have been a mistake to separate the pieces.”

Windows are hard. They are particularly hard in northern countries like Sweden, where during winter the days are short and the sun is very low in the sky. Window design in cold climate is a technical balancing act. You want it big to get the light, but you want it small to minimize the heat loss. But there is so much more that windows have to do for our social and emotional well-being.
A recent study published in Buildings and Cities looks at the many roles that windows play and the way people use them, exploring daylight, the visual connection to the outside and the role of windows in the home during the day and night. Windows do much more than just provide light and air: “Windows represent an enjoyment of the home and fulfil much more than physical needs. They must allow sufficient personal control over fresh and cool air, sound, sunlight, street lighting and privacy.”
The study authors, Kiran Maini Gerhardsson and Thorbjorn Laike, interviewed occupants living in multi-family dwellings. Windows turned out to be very important for occupant comfort, for visual connection to the outside. But they also had to be able to be screened for privacy; sometimes these conflicted. Sometimes the sill height was important. One occupant, Dmitry was going to add some frosted film to the bottom of his window. “I don’t want to see the faces of others when I’m sitting down, but when I’m standing and see their faces, I can wave to them,” he said.
Interviewees preferred daylight to artificial light for many reasons, including as a time indicator, and “because it varies, increases room brightness and improves mood”. Our bodies need the change from red to blue and back to red.
The authors conclude windows serve many functions that go beyond just light and air and should be designed accordingly. “There is much more to such experiences than the satisfaction of physical needs. Perceiving a room to be enough daylight, adequately pleasant and spacious seems to be equally essential, and a view of the world outside brings information to inhabit-ants. However, windows also need to prevent people outside from peering in moderate bright sunlight during the day.”
28.Which is the most difficult part of window design for cold climate?
    A.The size. B.The material. C.The sill height. D.The shape.
29.What does the underlined word “these” in paragraph 3 refer to?
    A.Social contact and staying alone.
B.Allowing fresh air to enter and preventing heat loss.
C.Receiving more daylight and using artificial light.
D.Getting connected with the outside and not letting out privacy.
30.Why did Dmitry want to add some frosted film to the bottom of his window?
A.To keep the room warm. B.To block the noise out.
C.To have his own private space. D.To make the window attractive.
31.What can be the best title for the text?
A.More space and more sunlight? B.The visual connection to the outside
C.Windows deliver more than light and air D.Do changes in houses affect well-being?
    D
Litter may be an environmental hazard and eyesore — but for some animals, it provides a home. In a study of local rivers, researchers at the University of Nottingham in the UK have found more invertebrates (无脊椎动物) like insects living on litter than on rocks in water.
The researchers studied three local rivers; the River Leen, Black Brook and Saffron Brook, in Leicestershire and Nottinghamshire. They collected samples (试样) of 50 rocks and 50 pieces of litter from the riverbeds at each site and took them back to the lab for comparison.
There they washed them individually to look for macroinvertebrates and then measured the surface area of each item. They found that the surfaces of the litter were inhabited (居住) by a more diverse group of invertebrates than those found on rocks.
Plastic, metal, fabric, and masonry samples of litter had the highest diversity of inhabitants, while glass and rock were much less diverse than other types of materials. Flexible plastic, like plastic bags, had the most diverse animal communities, causing the researchers to guess that the plastic might be similar to the structure of plants found in water.
“There were five species on litter. Some of these species are normally found on plants in water, which suggests that flexible plastic might be mistaken as those plants,” says lead author Hazel Wilson, a PhD student in the School of Geography at the University of Nottingham. “However, we need more investigation to work out for sure which characteristics of litter attract so many animals. This could help us discover methods and materials to replace the litter habitat with alternative and less damaging materials when we conduct river cleanups.”
“While these invertebrates have found a use for plastic bags and other trash, that obviously doesn’t mean that’s a good reason to leave litter in the environment. Our findings highlight the poor environmental quality in some rivers and point to the need for supporting better biodiversity,” says Wilson.
32.What did the researchers do for their study?
    A.They cleaned macroinvertebrates carefully.
B.They threw various types of litter into rivers.
C.They searched the samples for invertebrates.
D.They measured the surfaces of invertebrates.
33.What is a finding of the study?
A.Litter is less attractive for invertebrates.
    B.Litter can support greater biodiversity.
C.It’s easy for animals to survive in rivers.
D.Flexible materials are ignored by animals.
34.What is Hazel Wilson’s attitude towards leaving litter in rivers?
    A.Generally disapproving. B.Particularly ambiguous.
    C.Basically uncaring. D.Totally positive.
35.What is the best title for the text?
A.Litter Turns Out Beneficial to the Environment
B.River Animals Need a Cleaner Home to Survive
C.River Cleanups Shouldn’t Include Litter Anymore
D.Litter Creates Habitat for Some Animals in Rivers

Open Offices Can Lead to Closed Minds
“Loneliness is a crowded room,” as Bryan Ferry of the band Roxy Music once sang, adding that everyone was “all together, all alone.” The open-plan office might have been designed to make his point. That is not the reason for the layout, of course. The supposed aim of open-plan offices is to ensure that workers will have more __41__ with their colleagues, and that the resulting __42__ will lead to greater productivity.
Ethan Bernstein and Stephen Turban, two Harvard Business School academics, set out to test this proposition. The authors surveyed interactions between colleagues in two unnamed multinational companies which had __43__ open-plan offices. They did so by recruiting workers to wear different devices to detect, record, and monitor their interactions, body movement, and their location.
At the first company, the authors found that face-to-face interactions were more than three times higher in the old, cubicle (小隔间)-based office than in an open-plan space where employees have clear lines of sight to each other. __44__, the number of e-mails people sent to each other __45__ by 56% when they switched to open-plan. In the second company, face-to-face interactions decreased by a third after the switch to open-plan, whereas __46__ traffic increased by between 22% and 50%.
Why did this shift occur? The authors suggest that employees value their __47__ and find new ways to __48__ it in an open-plan office. They shut themselves off by wearing large headphones to keep out the __49__ caused by nearby colleagues. Indeed, those who __50__ open-plan offices seem to have forgotten the importance of being able to concentrate on your work.
__51__ also find other ways of communicating with their fellow workers. Rather than have a chat in front of a large audience, employees simply send an e-mail; the result (as measured at one of the two companies surveyed) was that __52__ declined.
Cubicles do not offer a great work environment either; they are still noisy and cut off employees from natural light. But at least workers have more of a chance to give their work area a(n) __53__ touch. Allowing plenty of room for pictures of children, office plants, novelty coffee mugs — these are ways of making people feel more relaxed and happy in their jobs.
However, an open-plan office is a clear __54__ to low-level office workers that they are seen as disposable cogs in a machine. Combine this with the lack of privacy and the office becomes a(n) __55__ place to work. Workers could stay at home but that negates the intended benefits of collaboration that open-plan offices bring.

“I’m going to school today!” announced my little brother, Trevor, bouncing to the breakfast table.
Mom looked at me. “Isn’t it great, Annie? You'll both be at the same school! And I can’t help remembering your first day to school when I had to calm you down by blowing kisses.”
Actually, it was not great at all. School used to feel like my thing. But now he would sit in my old classroom, with my old teacher. Enough! I hated to see the naughty Trevor as part of my school life.
As we arrived at the school gate, Trevor turned to me and asked whether he could play with me during the break, worried and hesitant. I shook my head and reminded him of the school rules: You small kids play in the kindergarten area. I stay on the big playground!
I pulled Trevor forward and led him to his classroom, where he was greeted by his teacher, Mrs. Morena, “Hello, Trevor! Want to come and meet the other kids?”
Trevor nodded and let go of my hand. I disappeared in a flash, excited to join my friends. When the bell rang, I was given a seat by an open window where I could see the kindergarten room if I looked outside. I faced forward, trying to focus on what the teacher was saying. For no reason, a question continuously crossed my mind: How was Trevor?
During the break, I forgot all about Trevor. It was great to be back at school! I was running to the slide when a loud cry rang out across the playground. It sounded familiar.
I looked to the kindergarten area. There was Trevor sitting in the sandbox, tears on his face.
“I want to go home!” he howled. Mrs. Morena was talking to him, but he was still crying.
I took another step toward the slide. Then Trevor cried again. My feet turned, and I was running toward him. But there was a fence between the kindergarten area and the big playground, and I couldn’t go where he was.
    注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;

W: Hello Ian. Have you finished the homework? Who do you write about?
M: Yes. I wrote about my dad because he is a firefighter.
W: Really? Did he actually go into burning buildings?
M: Yes, and he sometimes has to crawl into tight places to rescue people.
W: Has he ever been trapped in a burning building?
M: Well, he once broke down a door and carried a little girl out of her house. Someone left the stove on, and it ignited(点燃) a fire in the kitchen.
    W: Was everyone all right?
M: All five people living there escaped safely, but the house burned to the ground.
W: Your dad is incredibly brave, a real hero. Maybe I should become a firefighter someday.

W: Well, I had all sorts of ideas for new dishes, which the staff thought would sell, but the boss wasn’t interested. That’s when a friend told me about the “mobile restaurant” idea. It sounds great.
M: So you can decide on your menu?
W: Yes, but obviously the ones I know how to cook, then I advertise it so people can book a meal. The most amazing thing is that all the advertising is done through websites. And because you know how many people you’re cooking for, food doesn’t get wasted.
    M: Nice.
W: Besides, I could buy all the things without risk because customers pay in advance. The greatest advantage, though, is by having ten customers at most, I don’t need to hire a waiter.
M: Do you ever run into problems?
W: Yes, I did one meal on a beach and the wind blew sand into people’s food. Fortunately, I’d brought a large umbrella to protect myself from the sun, so I put it around their table instead!

Window design in cold climate is a technical balancing act. You want it big to get the light, but you want it small to minimize the heat loss.(窗户都难。 故选A。

34.推理判断题。根据最后一段“While these invertebrates have found a use for plastic bags and other trash, that obviously doesn’t mean that’s a good reason to leave litter in the environment.(虽然这些无脊椎动物发现了塑料袋和其他垃圾的用途,但这显然并不意味着这是一个在环境中留下垃圾的好理由。)”可推断,Hazel Wilson 对将垃圾留在河里这件事的态度“总体上是不认可的”。故选A项。
35.主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是文章第一段“Litter may be an environmental hazard and eyesore—but for some animals, it provides a home. In a study of local rivers, researchers at the University of Nottingham in the UK have found more invertebrates (无脊椎动物) like insects living on litter than on rocks in water.(垃圾可能会危害环境,也会碍眼,但对一些动物来说,它提供了一个家。在一项对当地河流的研究中,英国诺丁汉大学的研究人员发现,生活在垃圾上的昆虫等无脊椎动物比生活在水中的岩石上的要多。)”可知,文章主要介绍了一个研究发现——垃圾为水里的一些无脊椎动物提供了生长环境。这一发现启发我们应该为生物多样性的发展创造更好的环境。故D项“垃圾为河流中的一些动物创造了栖息地”适合作为文章标题。故选D项。
