Dear Sharon Draper,
A lot of books have flashes of insight, but only few of them can open the readers’ mind and make them realize something new. Your book, Out of My Mind, filled me with those sparks. I enjoyed getting to know Melody. Despite the fact that she had cerebral palsy(脑瘫),Melody had an amazing character that shone brightly. Out of My Mind helped me learn a life-long lesson.
Your book has changed my point of view. I never teased those who had special needs, but I never really felt comfortable around them either. When I started reading your novel, I saw how Melody was a smart and talented girl. At the beginning of the book, I asked myself, “Would I be Melody’s friend?” The voice in my stomach told me the sad truth: no. I carried on with your book from start to finish, and when I closed it, I asked myself the same question, “Would I be Melody’s friend?” I realized, with a smile, that the answer was right in front of me. Throughout Out of My Mind, I had become Melody’s friend.
Last year, there was a boy in my class who had Asperger’s syndrome(阿斯伯格综合症). I didn’t really know him; he just seemed different to me. This was around the time that I read your novel. Melody showed me how she was just as good as anyone else in her classroom and how the same goes for anyone else with disabilities. The boy in my class amazed me by what he was capable of doing. As the days went by, I started helping him instead of avoiding him.
Melody opened my eyes and cleared the world around me. She showed me how a girl with cerebral palsy was the same as a girl like me. Now it is time for me to thank you for writing this amazing novel. I will never forget your fantastic book.
Sincerely,
Margaret Lim

B
I needed to get some money so, after Christmas, I took a job in the clothes department at Graham's for the first fortnight of the January sale. I can't say that I enjoyed it, but it was an experience I'll never forget.
I could never understand why there were so many things in the sales; where did they all come from? Now I k the secret! Firstly, there is the special winter stock(货物)and the stock that people buy all the year round; some of these things are slightly reduced. Secondly, there are the summer clothes they couldn't sell last year; these are heavily reduced to clear them. Thirdly, there are cheap clothes bought in specially for the sales; these are put out at high prices ten days before the sale begins and then are reduced by 60% in the sale. Clever! Lastly, they buy in “seconds” (clothes not in perfect condition) for the sale and they are sold very cheaply.
When I arrived half an hour before opening on the first day of the sale, there was already a queue around three sides of the building. This made me very nervous.
When the big moment arrived to open the doors, the security guards, looking less confident than usual, came up to them, keys in hand. The moment they had unlocked the doors, they hid behind the doors for protection as the noisy crowd charged in. I couldn't believe my eyes; this wasn't shopping, it was a battlefield! One poor lady couldn't keep her feet and was knocked over by people pushing from behind.
Clothes were flying in all directions as people searched for the sizes, colours and styles they wanted. Quarrels broke out. Mothers were using their small children to crawl through people's legs and get hold of things they couldn’t get near themselves.
Within minutes I had half a dozen people pushing clothes under my nose, each wanting to be the first served. Where had the famous English Queue gone? The whole day continued like that, but I kept my temper! I was taking money hand over fist and began to realize why, twice a year, Grahames were happy to turn their expensive store into a battlefield like this.
In the sale fever, people were spending money like water without thinking whether they needed what, they were buying. As long as it was a bargain it was OK.
Youwon’t believe this but as soon as I got home I crashed out for four hours. Then I had dinner and went back to bed, fearing the sound of the alarm which would tell me to get ready for the second day of the sale.
41. What kind of clothes is likely to be sold 5% cheaper?
A. Last summer’s clothes.
B. Clothes not in perfect condition.
C. Clothes bought in specially for the sales.
D. Clothes for winter.
42. Which of the following statements is true?
A. The customers gave up the queuing for which the English are famous.
B. The customers kept their temper while looking for clothes they wanted.
C. Small children enjoyed crawling through people’s legs.
D. The security guards were fearless of the crowd.
43. In the author’s opinion, why were Graham’s happy to make their expensive store into “Battlefield?
A. There were too many clothes and they wanted to clear them in the sales.
B. They were eager to show that they were clever at doing business.
C. They could take the chance to raise the prices of all their clothes.
D. They wanted to make more money by having sales.
44. The expression “crashed out” means ________.

Tiny as they are, bats have the ability to "see" in the dark by using a special skill called echolocation(回声定位法).They make noises and wait for sound waves, or an echo, to bounce(反弹)back off objects. They can tell the distance of various objects by how quickly the sound waves bounce back off them. If no sound bounces back, they can then fly forward.
This special ability has been simulated in the human world for a long time, such as in submarines and planes, whose sonar(声呐)systems are somewhat similar to echolocation. But apart from helping vehicles “see” where they are, what if blind people could use echolocation for themselves? It turns out, some already are.
American Daniel Kish, who is blind, is known as "Batman”. This isn't because he walks around in a cape and a mask but because he has a bat-like ability to locate where he is through sharp clicks he makes by moving his tongue against the roof of his mouth. Kish is so skilled at echo locating that he can ride a bike and hike on his own.
Recently, research carried out at the University of Durham in England shed some light on the power of human echolocation.
Kish worked with a group of scientists who studied the way blind people listen to the echoes that they produce from clicks.
The team, which conducted experiments with other volunteers, found that people were capable of hearing even very faint echoes, ones far fainter than had been previously thought.
Speaking to The Independent, Lore Thaler, lead scientist of the group, said, “We found that in some conditions, they were really faint-about 95 percent softer than the actual clicks, but the echolocators were still able to sense this.”
Andrew Kolarik of the University of Cambridge is another expert in echolocation. Reacting to the Durham study, he told BBC News that echolocation "can be very useful at providing information at face or chest height55 and could help people “avoid objects like low hanging branches that might not get detected by the cane or a guide dog”.
Although Kish's skill is remarkable, there's hope for other blind people who want to use echolocation. According to BBC News, echolocation is a skill blind people can acquire and develop, just like learning a language. As Kolarik said: "Teaching echolocation skills could provide blind people with the means of exploring new places."
46. The underlined word “simulated” in Paragraph 2 probably means _____.
A. discovered B. copied C. improved D. challenged
47. How does Kish locate where he is?
A. By using his great sense of hearing.
B. By listening to the echoes produced by his cane.
C. Via the echoes from the clicks he makes with his tongue.
D. Via the sonar system attached to his body.
48. What did Lore Thaler's team find from their studies?
A. It is hard for echolocators to sense faint echoes.
B. Humans can echolocate better than we thought we could.
C. Echolocators can pick up all types of echoes.
D. Blind people are better echolocators than those who can see.
49. According to the article, teaching echolocation to blind people ___________.
A. will enable them to get rid of their cane
B. will improve their ability to learn a new language
C. will open up new possibilities for them
D. is not easy to put into practice
50. What is the article mainly about?
A. Studies on blind people using echolocation.
B. Different types of human echolocation.
C. The importance of human echolocation.
D. Why bats' echolocation could be used by humans.

Sometimes you'll hear people say that you can't love others until you love yourself. Sometimes you'll hear people say that you can't expect someone else to love you until you love yourself. Either way, you've got to love yourself first and this can be tricky. Sure we all know that we're the apple of our parents' eyes, and that our Grandmas think we're great talents and our Uncle Roberts think that we will go to the Olympics, but sometimes it's a lot harder to think such nice thoughts about ourselves. If you find that believing in yourself is a challenge, it is time you build a positive sell-image and learn to love yourself.
Self-image is your own mind's picture of yourself. This image includes the way you look, the way you act, the way you talk and the way you think. Interestingly, our self-images are often quite different from the images others hold about us. Unfortunately, most of these images are more negative than they should be. Thus changing the way you think about yourself is the key to changing your self-image and your whole world.
The best way to defeat a passive self-image is to step back and decide to stress your successes. That is, make a list if you need to, but write down all of the great things you do every day. Don't allow doubts to occur in it.
It very well might be that you are experiencing a negative self-image because you can't move past one flaw or weakness that you see about yourself. Well, roll up your sleeves and make a change of it as your primary task. If you think you're silly because you aren't good at math, find a tutor. If you think you're weak because you can't run a mile, get to the track and practice. If you think you're dull because you don't wear the latest trends, buy a few new clothes. But remember, just because you think it doesn't mean it's true.
The best way to get rid of a negative serf-image is to realize that your image is far objective, and to actively convince yourself of your positive qualities. Changing the way you think and working on those you need to improve will go a long way towards promoting positive self-image. When you can pat(拍)yourself on the back, you'll know you're well on your way. Good luck!
51. You need to build a positive self-image when ______________.
A. you dare to challenge yourself
B. you are unconfident about yourself
C. you feel it hard to change yourself
D. you have a high opinion of yourself
52. According to the passage, our serf-images______________.
A. have positive effects B. are often changeable
C. are probably untrue D. have different functions
53. How should you change your serf-image according to the passage?
A. To change the way you think.
B. To make your life successful.
C. To understand your own world.
D. To keep a different image of others.
54. What is the passage mainly about?
A. How to prepare for your success.
B. How to face challenges in your life.
C. How to develop your good qualities.
D. How to build a positive self-image.
55. Who are the intended readers of the passage?
A. Parents. B. Educators. C. Adolescents. D. People in general.

The recipients (接受者) are always excited and thankful when Mia shows up with a box of cookies and a hand-made drawing. Mia is proud of her art and thinks the presentation is the best part. “She went right up to these people who she’d never met, and walked them through the picture’s drawing process,” Amanda said. “One police officer said he was going to hang the picture in his office and she was really excited.”
Mia’s great-grandfather, Doug Greth, is beyond proud of the caring girl Mia has become. He and Mia’s great-grandmother, Dolores, have been following her journey since its first days and are deeply touched by the appreciation lavished (慷慨给与) on the little girl. “We have such a great family and Mia shows how we value goodness in our family,” Greth said. “The cookies and the picture show such a great effort.
