Exercise plays a very important role in a healthy lifestyle. But you may not have time or money to go to a gym on a regular basis. The good news is that today’s technology lets you access fitness classes from the comfort of your home. A quick Internet search will turn up thousands of online fitness classes. You can watch videos on your phone, computer or tablet and do the exercises right where you are. All you need is an Internet connection and a space large enough to move around in.

Online fitness classes take a wide variety of forms. Some focus on stretches and slow movements. Other classes involve fast aerobic (有氧的) activity, while others build muscle strength. Some require equipment such as weights, but others use only your body. This means that you can choose a class that does what you like. And you can try a different one whenever you like.

Anyone can post a fitness video on the Internet. Not everyone knows what they are doing. So it is important to think about who is teaching the class. Try to find teachers who are certified (认证) by an organization with a good reputation. I tried some virtual fitness classes several years ago. The reason was simple: convenience. I could do a fitness class at any time of day. I didn’t need to travel to a gym and back, which saved me a lot of time. But being able to work out any time may mean putting it off and doing everything else first and then the day will be over. So, you have to make a plan, if you want to get around to exercising.

Anyhow, if the gym isn’t for you, you may want to give an online fitness class a try.

    21. What does paragraph 2 mainly tell us about online fitness classes?

    A. They have similar equipment. B. They have wide attraction.

    C. They have different movements. D. They have various forms.

    22. What’ s the author’s attitude to online exercise?

    A. Positive. B. Uninterested. C. Unclear. D. Doubtful.

    23. What can we learn from the text?

    A. Online fitness classes meet all your needs.

    B. It’s difficult to take online fitness classes on time.

    C. Online fitness classes may save you time and money.

    D. You can not attend online fitness classes if you are not certified.

World Food Day falls on October 16 in memory of the day when the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the UN was formed. The events of the day usually focus on reducing, or rather, removing hunger from the face of the earth. Farmers and government officials are often given tips on how to get rid of hunger with better effect.

World Food Day was created by FAO member countries in November 1979. It was during their 20th General Conference that the observance (纪念、庆祝) of World Food Day was decided. It was not observed until 1981 when the specific date was determined. Pal Romany, the then Hungary's Minister of Agriculture and Food, played an important role in the founding of World Food Day during the 20th General Conference. Many people at the conference welcomed the idea.

World Food Day is not only celebrated by FAO and the United Nations, but several other organizations concerned with food security, hunger reduction, consumption of balanced diet and health also take part in the celebration. On the day, which is usually observed in more than 150 countries in the world, a number of activities like marathons, concerts, agricultural inventions, and cultural exhibitions and shows are usually organized.

Each year has its own theme to celebrate World Food Day. The themes are always related to food production, availability, and consumption. The themes are always set so that the public can come up with suggestions and ideas that are effective in dealing with hunger, poverty, and famine. In fact, most themes are agriculture related. This is because agriculture is the chief source of food.

World Food Day hopes to bring awareness to help people from around the globe solve issues concerning hunger and famine. It is meant to help farmers attain modern skills that would help achieve food security. The day is also set aside to encourage the government to think of methods to keeping food security in a country.

    24. What have you got to know about World Food Day?

    A. Its celebrations have the same theme relevant to agriculture.

    B. It has been celebrated across the globe ever since it was created.

    C. It is meant to make people realize the importance of food security.

    D. It is celebrated to remember one of the former crucial ministers.

    25. What can we infer from paragraph 3?

    A. Food shortage is a worldwide issue. B. Creativity is essential to agriculture.

    C. The hunger problem has reduced. D. World Food Day is well-received.

    26. What can be the most suitable title for the article?

    A. World Food Day ABC B. Why to Advocate Agriculture

    C. World Food Day History D. How to Solve Hunger Issues

    C

Throughout history, many species of animals have been threatened with extinction. When Europeans first arrived in North America, more than 60 million buffalo (水牛) lived on the continent. Yet hunting the buffalo was so popular during the 19th century that by 1900 the animal’s population had fallen to about 400 before the government stepped in to protect the species. In some countries today, the elephant faces a similar challenge, as illegal hunters kill the animals for the ivory in their tusks.

Yet not all animals with commercial value face this threat (威胁).The cow, for example, is a valuable source of food, but no one worries that the cow will soon be extinct. Why does the commercial value of ivory threaten the elephant. while the commercial value of beef protects the cow?

The reason is that elephants are a common resource, while cows are private goods. Elephants wander freely without any owners. The hunter has a strong motivation to kill as many elephants as he can find. Because illegal hunters are numerous, each has only a slight motivation to preserve the elephant population. By contrast, cattle live on farms that are privately owned. Each farmer makes great effort to maintain the cattle population on his farm because he harvests the benefit of these efforts.

Governments have tried to solve the elephant’s problem in two ways. Some countries, such as Kenya and Uganda, have made it illegal to kill elephants and sell their ivory. Yet these laws have been hard to put into effect, and elephant populations have continued to dwindle. By contrast, other countries, such as Malawi and Namibia, have made elephants private goods and allowed people to kill elephants, but only those on their own property.

With private ownership and the profit motive now on its side, the African elephant might someday be as safe from extinction as the cow. The ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle pointed out the problem with common resources: “What is common to many is taken least care of, for all men have greater regard for what is their own than for what they possess in common with others.”

    27. Why does the author mention buffalo in paragraph 1?

    A. To introduce a similar threat to elephants.

    B. To provide an example of species extinction.

    C. To offer an explanation for government policies.

    D. To present the statistics of the buffalo in America.

    28. Why do elephants face threats while cows are safe?

    A. They are under different law protection

    B. They attract different groups of hunters

    C. They contain different commercial value

    D. They represent different ownership types

    29. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?

    A. Bans on killing elephants for ivory

    B. Effective laws for elephant protection.

    C. Methods of making elephants private goods

    D. Government policies on the elephant’s problem

    30. What can we learn from Aristotle’s words?

    A. People hold little regard for others’ property

    B. People want to profit from common resources

    C. People care more about their own possession

    D. People tend to take what they own for granted

    第二节  读后续写(满分25分)

    阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I was a proud mother of three children, my last little one being delivered in the middle of this pandemic. She was born in August and her name is Aida.

Shortly after having Aida, my mother-in-law showed me something she learned from her friend’s mother in an art class she attended weekly. She had shown me how to knit a scarf. She showed me stitches and gave me her half done project.

I spent a lot of time breastfeeding my sweet little girl, so I had some extra time to do something with my hands throughout the day. I enjoyed making the scarf so I purchased tons of yarn (纱线) since it was winter. I wanted to make scarves for my three children as Christmas gifts.

There was a new family that moved in down the street. The only daughter of the family was Jane, a shy girl, aged 14, the same age of my oldest son David. It seemed that she came from a financially disadvantaged family, for she always wore old clothes. Worse still, in such cold days, she had no more clothes to wear and trembled with cold.

Due to the pandemic, society was thrown into crisis mode. Schools were closed, food supplies and deliveries were suspended and children were stuck at home. In such discouraging times, however, they became good companions, talking and playing at home or around the houses.

It was dreadfully cold this winter. Every time David came back from outside, with red face, he always cried, “Mum, it’s freezing outside!” then he came over to see whether I finished the scarf. I could tell how impatient he was to wear my scarf sooner! I had to speed the project to satisfy his expectation. But David comforted me saying he could wait a few days. What a kind and considerate boy he was! Then my great project finally was accomplished on the morning ahead of Christmas.

    注意:

    1. 所续写短文的词数应为150左右;

    2. 至少使用5个短文中标有下划线的关键词语;

    3. 续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好;

    4. 续写完成后,请用下划线标出你所使用的关键词语。

    Paragraph 1

I wrapped the scarf around David’s neck.

    ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

    Paragraph 2

Later that day David came back saying Jane also deserved a scarf.
