As a girl, I have always been fond of exercise. Over the years I have found that weight training has been useful to increase my strength. I would go for months and months doing the same sports. I would go. to the gym and use the same ma-chines over and over, spending at least 45 minutes every day. My results were that I was basically in shape, but probably carrying a little extra weight.
I was glad to have done the MAX Workouts because they were short and efficient. And I was able to leave the gym and stay away from the large weight machines that sat on at the back of my house. My results with the MAX Workouts were of the first class. I lost weight and got the tightest muscles I have ever had.
I love mountain biking so I would do that every other day. To be fair, I started eating for my blood type and made sure I ate a small breakfast before working out. I used to skip breakfast! These changes probably were also one of the factors for my weight loss as well.
Recently I had a pretty bad mountain bike accident. I broke my hand and hurt my knee and face pretty badly. I had to go in for a few doctor visits. But I got well so quickly and now I am back at the full program of MAX Workouts again. My last doctor visit was funny. The doctor spent the whole time asking me how I was in such good shape. She wanted to know if it was the mountain biking, and if so, she wanted to try it.
4. For what purpose did the author write the passage?
A. To tell some kinds of sports she enjoys. B. To share her experiences in weight loss.

5. What did the author think of gym sports?
A. She had no interest in them.
B. She spoke highly of them.
C. They didn’t help the author lose weight efficiently.
D. She thought that they were a waste of time.

A. The author went mountain biking every day. B. The author stopped eating breakfast.
C. The author made some changes in her daily life. D. The author refused to eat before doing sports.
7. From the last paragraph we can infer that .
A. the author was too careless B. the author was in poor health
C. the author doesn’t take MAX Workouts now D. the author had got over the bike accident

A new study suggests that cold weather might lead to cold. But a scientist says there might be a simple, even old-fashioned way, to keep it off: wear a thick scarf over your nose. In a study in mice, researchers have found the cold virus loves a cooler environment — that is, it does better in the nose than in other parts.
There are two reasons, the researchers report. First, the common cold virus increases more rapidly when it exists in surroundings bathed by cold air. So your nose feels bad if you have a cold. Second, the cells in our airways don’t fight off viruses when we’re in a low-temperature environment. So, it’s entirely possible that if we can keep our noses warm, we might keep away from the cold. Many of us have the cold virus in our noses without symptoms — about 20 to 25 percent of healthy people carry the virus — and if you are one of those people and you go out in the cold, you might develop symptoms.
If we can keep our noses warm, we might be less likely to develop cold symptoms. Your mom tells you that going out with wet hair will lead to a cold. Her words are incorrect. That’s because the virus doesn’t enter our bodies through our heads.
While cold air in the nose might make us easier to catch a cold, it’s not the main reason so many of us get sick in the winter. After all, you need to have viruses around to develop an infection. The main reason you get sick is contact with someone else who has the virus. The more students who have colds, the more viruses there are in the class and the more likely it is that you’ll be in contact with someone who has the virus.
8. What should you do to avoid catching a cold in winter?
A. Wear thick clothes. B. Wear a soft scarf.
C. Keep the nose warm. D. Dress in an old-fashioned way.
9. Why does your nose feel sick when you have a cold?
A. You breathe with your nose. B. There are dirty things in your nose.
C. The virus increases faster in your nose. D. The virus comes into your body through your nose.
10. What does the author suggest?
A. You shouldn’t go out on cold days. B. You shouldn’t get close to people who have colds.
C. You should go to see the doctor when having a cold. D. You should wash your nose as often as possible.
11. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. Healthy people may carry the virus.
B. Wet hair can easily lead to a cold.
C. The virus exists a long time in our airways.
D. You will never catch a cold if you keep your nose warm.
D
Imagine if each tap from the Colorado River-whether to a farm, a factory, or a home — suddenly went dry for a year, what would happen to the West’s economy?
That’s pretty much the question a team of researchers at Arizona State University set out to answer-and the results are startling.
The area would lose $1.4 trillion in economic activity, along with 16 million jobs. Each of the six states — Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming-plus seven southern California counties supplied by the Colorado River would see losses of half or more of their economy. Nevada’s would drop by 87 percent. These results are far beyond everyone’s expectations.
The team, including over 1,000 businesses, reveals how important the Colorado River is not only to these seven states that make up the water area, but also to the nation as a whole.
Of all the water used in the area, 43% of agriculture’s supply and 41% of municipal(市政的) and industrial supplies come from the Colorado River.
California’s seven southern counties led the states in estimated losses, with some $ 657 billion in economic activity dependent on the river’s water. Next was Colorado with $ 189 billion, followed in descending order(递减) by Arizona, Nevada, Utah, New Mexico and Wyoming.
About 7 million jobs would disappear in California, and more than 2. 1 million each in Arizona and Colorado.
The study doesn’t fully account for the estimated $ 26 billion in benefits to the recreational economy that depends on healthy flows in the Colorado River and its branches.
It might seem a meaningless exercise to estimate damage to western economies. But given what a lifeline the river is to the region, and the amount of economic activity that depends on it, even part of decrease in flows could be a big problem. And for Arizona, Nevada and southern California, which get their Colorado water delivered from Lake Mead, the falling level of the lake over the last decade made the situation hit uncomfortably close to home. Since 2000, Lake Mead’s level has dropped more than 100 feet.
12. The underlined word “startling” is the nearest in meaning to .
A. frightening B. surprising C. unknown D. positive
13. If the Colorado River went dry, which state would lose the most?
A. California. B. Nevada. C. Arizona. D. Colorado.
14. Considering the service industries, the economic losses of .
A. Arizona would most possibly be the biggest B. the region of the Colorado River might be less
C. Colorado might be more than $189 billion D. New Mexico might rank the first of the 7 states
15. What do we know from the last paragraph?
A. The water of Lake Mead flows into the Colorado River.
B. The Colorado River runs through the south of America.
C. The situation of the river has threatened people’s home life.
D. The falling of Lake Mead’s water level shows the river’s drying.

Things That Really Smart People Do
Quiet Thoughts or Feelings Inside Your Head
It’s the voice that brings up your own opinion about the information being provided. It is too easy to pay more attention to the inner voice than the actual speaker. That voice often keeps you listening openly for good information.
16 You may be surprised at what you hear.
Argue with Yourself
Every time you hear yourself contradicting the speaker, stop and take the other point of view. Suggest to your brain all the reasons why the speaker may be correct and you may be wrong. In the best case you may open yourself to the information being provided. 17
Act Like You Are Curious
18 No matter which category you are in, you can benefit from behaving like a curious person. Next time you are listening to information, make up and write down three to five relevant questions. In this way, you’ll likely learn more, and the action of thinking up questions will help put the concepts in your brain.
Find the Small Part of Truth
19 Somewhere in the carefully organized concept that sounds like complete nonsense, there is some aspect that is based on fact. Even if you don’t accept an idea, you should at least identify the little bit of truth from which it came.
Focus on the Message Not the Person Delivering It
Often people stop themselves from learning due to the person delivering the material. Whether it’s a boring lecturer or not, the communicator can impact your learning. 20 Pretend you don’t know the person so you can hear the information without being influenced.
A. In that case, you’ll get distracted.
B. Separate the material from the provider.
C. No concept of theory comes out of thin air.
D. Some people are naturally curious and others are not.
E. Curiosity is one of the best qualities great men possess.
F. Failing that, you’ll at least strengthen your own argument.
G. Focus less on what your brain has to say and more on the speaker.
