| 1. Teacher asks the students to read the first sentence of each paragraph of the passage and locate the answer to the questions: (1). What has Stephen Curry achieved? (success) (Para. 4) (2). What difficulties are there on his road to success? (road) (Para. 3) (3). What’s the author’s purpose in writing the passage? (Para. 5) 2. Genre: sports news, focusing more and more on values and athletes’ positive influence on people. | ||||||
8min | Reading for specific information | 1. Teacher asks Students to read the passage carefully and answer these questions: (1). Why does the author mention the “simple basket” at the start of the passage? (2). What things did Stephen Curry learn on the muddy basketball court? (3). Stephen Curry chose to be a big fish in a small pond after high school---to play college ball at the small, little known Davidson College. Do you think it’s a wise decision and why? (4). “I know it inspires a lot of the next generation… to value the skill of it…”. (Para. 5) What does it refer to? 2. Teacher asks students to go through the passage quickly and find out the main idea of each paragraph and list key words. Students finish the profile in Exercise 4. 3. Teacher guides students to draw the mind map about the qualities that lead Stephen Curry to success with supporting details, eg: Self-believing: despite many people thinking he couldn’t follow his father’s footstep, he carried on playing basketball. 4.
