Teaching Prcedures
STEP 1 Having a revisin
Get yur students t read and cmpare these sentences.
The cnclusin: We can use adjectives t describe smene r smething. We can put and adjective befre a nun r after a linking verb.
Get the students t talk abut the sample sentences in Part A t check if we make the right cnclusin.
STEP 2 Being fllwed by adjectives
Usually, verbs are fllwed by adverbs. But they can be fllwed by adjectives. Why? Because they are different kind f verbs. If a verb can be fllwed by an adjective, then we can make a cnclusin that the verb is a ‘linking verb’. Get the students t think f mre examples.
(The verb ‘lk’ can be used in ther structures, ‘He lked at me angrily. ’ In this example, ‘lk’ is nt used as a linking verb, s it is mdified nt by an adjective but by an adverb ‘angrily’. The structure is different frm ‘He lked angry’)
STEP 3 Talking abut the pictures
Shw tw pictures t the students and get ne r tw students t talk abut the pictures.
Jim is tall. Sam is tall, t. (Let’s cmpare. Wh is taller?) Sam is taller.
Shw ne mre picture. Get the students t cmpare the three pictures. They may easily cme ut with the fllwing sentence, ‘Sam is the tallest.’
(I may use mre pairs f pictures like this t talk abut it.)
Tell the students that we use cmparatives t cmpare tw peple r things. When we cmpare three r mre peple r things, we use superlatives.
STEP 4 Frming cmparatives and superlatives
Ask the students, d yu knw hw t frm cmparatives and superlatives.
Get the students t finish Part B1 n page 9.
STEP 5 Finishing Part B2 n page 10
Get the students t finish Part B2 n page 10. Remind the students that the structures like ‘f the three, f all, in+ a nun’ usually g with superlatives. While the wrd ‘than’ is usually used with cmparatives. It is als imprtant t tell the students t add a ‘the’ befre superlatives.
If necessary, I think the teachers shuld give sme examples t shw the students hw t read and understand the structures. Then use questins t help them.
