I traveled t Guatemala fr three weeks study: tw in Quetzaltenang, which is a mid-sized twn, and ne in rural area. I lived with a hst family, had ne-n-ne language classes, learned traditinal weaving, and drank the mst delicius ht chclate I have ever tasted and went t strange places by myself. I cmmunicated. I learned.
    It was nt until I traveled that I discvered the pwer f a secnd language. I had pened the dr t cnversatins with peple n a whle cntinent. By the time I did my fficial study abrad in Valdivia, Chile fr the spring quarter f my secnd year f cllege, I was already at a fluent speaking level. I culd make friends. I culd talk abut ideas and peple’s lives. I culd ask questins. I culd be myself.
    When yu’re trying t learn a secnd language in a classrm, yu’re surrunded by ther peple wh als dn’t speak the language. S whatever stage f language learning yu’re nw at, try t push yurself t find a cuple f nn-class pprtunities t imprve yur skills. If yu’re in a university twn, there are prbably language learners lking fr language partners. There are increasing pprtunities fr frmal and infrmal tutring nline in varius languages. They’re all ut there; it’s just up t yu t find them.
