More and more parents are willing to send their children abroad to study. If everything goes well, by helping them to enter into worldfamous universities, parents are helping their children not only to have the best of education as they expect but also to understand and appreciate foreign cultures. Before sending your children abroad, there are many factors (因素) worth considering.
Studying abroad is not as expensive as you think. In fact, prices are not the most important factor in choosing schools especially if you have the chance to send your children in a relatively small university but of good quality. You will find that it is a worthy investment (投资) of your money to send your children to study abroad.
Are you ready to see your only child leave for another country? Before the trip it is necessary that you have the correct guidance to prepare your children to have a smooth trip. In addition to studying, your children in foreign land can learn new language and new culture. They will also learn to live on their own and to develop the selfconfidence, which is good for the forming of their character.
If you have already decided to send your children abroad, then they need the help to find the most suitable schools and courses. The children are still in growing stages. What is important is that the school should be able to provide not only the proper studying courses but it should also take into account the environment and help students to develop their selfconfidence. Most of all, remember that the parents’ aim is not to find the best school but help their children find the most suitable school. Your needs are not always what your children need.
4.The main purpose of parents sending children abroad to study is to ________.
    A.understand a new culture
B.improve them in a new language
C.let them have the best education
    D.raise their social position
5.Compared with big universities, small ones ________.
A.often have better quality of teaching
B.may not ask for too high fees
C.are easier to attract foreign students
D.are not as famous as big ones
6.How does studying abroad help to train the children’s character?
    A.By communicating with foreigners.
    B.By learning about new languages.
    C.By letting children live independently.
D.By letting children experience a new culture.
7.For parents, the key to helping children choose a most suitable school is to ________.
    A.learn everything about the school
    B.let children follow your will
C.see whether the school can provide good education
D.find out the children’s real needs
根据第一段的“parents are helping their children not only to have the best of education as they expect”可知,很多家长送孩子到国外学习最大的期望是让孩子获得最好的教育。
根据第二段的第二句“In fact, prices are not the most important factor in choosing schools especially if you have the chance to send your children in a relatively small university but of good quality. ”可知,如果送孩子到一所相对较小但是质量很高的学校,价格不是最大的问题,这就暗示相对较小的学校收费不是很高。
6.C 细节理解题。根据第三段的“They will also learn to live on their own and to develop the selfconfidence, which is good for the forming of their character. ”可知,让孩子在国外学习可以让他们学会独立生活,培养自信,这对他们性格的形成有好处。
7.D 推理判断题。根据末段的两句话“Most of all, remember that the parents’ aim is not to find the best school but help their children find the most suitable school. Your needs are not always what your children need. ”可知,做家长的是要帮助孩子选择最合适的学校,而不是找最好的学校,家长所需要的不一定就是孩子需要的。这就说明在选择学校时,要关注孩子的需要。
    C
Meeting people from another culture can be difficult. From the beginning, people may send the wrong signal (信号). Or they may pay no attention to signals from another person who is trying to develop a relationship.
Different cultures emphasize (强调) the importance of relationship building to a greater or lesser degree. For example, business in some countries is not possible until there is a relationship of trust. Even with people at work, it is necessary to spend a lot of time in “small talk”, usually over a glass of tea, before they do any job. In many European countries—like the UK or France— people find it easier to build up a lasting working relationship at restaurants or cafes rather than at the office.
Talk and silence may also be different in some cultures. I once made a speech in Thailand. I had expected my speech to be a success and start a lively discussion; instead there was an uncomfortable silence. The people present just stared at me and smiled. After getting to know their ways better, I realized that they thought I was talking too much. In my own culture, we express meaning mainly through words, but people there sometimes feel too many words are unnecessary.
Even within Northern Europe, cultural differences can cause serious problems. Certainly, English and German cultures share similar values; however, Germans prefer to get down to business more quickly. We think that they are rude. In fact, this is just because one culture starts discussions and makes decisions more quickly.
People from different parts of the world have different values, and sometimes these values are quite against each other. However, if we can understand them better, a multicultural environment (多元文化环境) will offer a wonderful chance for us to learn from each other.
    8. In some countries, eating together at restaurants may make it easier for people to________.
    A. develop closer relations
    B. share the same culture
    C. get to know each other
    D. keep each other company
    9. Why does the author mention his experience in Thailand?
    A. To show the English prefer to make long speeches.
    B. To show too many words are of no use.
    C. To show people from Thailand are quiet and shy by nature.
    D. To show even talk and silence can be culturally different.
    10. According to the text, how can people from different cultures understand each other better?
    A. By sharing different ways of life.
    B. By accepting different habits.
    C. By recognizing different values.
    D. By speaking each other’s languages.
    11. What would be the best title for the text?
    A. Multicultural Environment
    B. Cross-Cultural Differences
    C. How to Understand Each Other
    D. How to Build Up a Relationship
    【答案】ADCB

The "little voice in your head”" can be your worst critic and greatest supporter. It's been known to help with directions, give advice, and even remind you to put potatoes on the grocery list.
But does everyone have an inner monologue(独白)? For a long time, it was assumed that an inner voice was simply part of being human. But it turns out, that's not the case-not everyone processes life in words and sentences.
"By inner monologue, we mean that we can have private speech that's addressed to ourselves and that is carried out without any sound," said Helene Levenbruck, a senior neurolinguistics researcher at CNRS.
With true inner speech, you almost "hear" your inner voice, she told Live Science. You're aware of its tone and intonation (语调). For example, the voice can "sound" angry or worried.
This long-held assumption was first challenged in the late 1990s by Russell Hurlburt, a psychologist at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Hurlburt studied participants’ inner speech by asking them to wear a beeper (传呼机). Whenever the device beeped, they had to write down what they were thinking or experiencing in their mind just before the sound.
Perhaps the participant wrote down, "I need to buy some bread." He would then ask if that's what they actually thought." Or did you think‘bread'? Or were you hungry?" Lcevenbruck explained. After several meetings, participants got better at articulating(流利连贯地表达) their true thoughts, she said. Eventually, this method revealed that some people had inner speech every time the device beeped. But others had less inner speech than usual, and some didn't have inner speech at all. They experienced images, sensations and emotions, but not a voice or words.
The lack of an inner monologue has been linked to a condition called aphantasia(心盲症)—sometimes called“blindness of the mind's eye." People who experience aphantasia can't mentally picture their bedroom or their mother's face. Many times, those who don't experience visualizations don't experience clear inner speech, either, Lcevenbruck noted.
    12. What was previously assumed about the inner monologue?
    A. It rarely existed in humans.
    B. It could help solve all kinds of problems.
    C. It was something everyone was born with.
    D. It was mainly displayed in the form of writing.
    13. What does Loevenbruck say about an inner monologue?
    A. It lacks tone and intonation.
    B. It is delivered in public.
    C. It can be heard by others.
    D. It can convey emotions.
    14. What did Hurlburt do in his study?
    A. He used a beeper to note down participants' inner speech.
    B. He required participants to describe their grocery lists.
    C. He checked participants’ notes and asked about their true thoughts.
    D. He placed something in participants' heads to record their inner speech.
    15. Why do some people never experience an inner monologue?
    A. They suffer serious brain damage.
    B. They cannot distinguish what they see.
    C. They misunderstand their true thoughts.
    D. They fail to mentally picture what they see.

Are you planning to study a course from a foreign university? Well, these tips for studying abroad will make you feel at home in a new city.
    Learn about the university.
When you decide to study abroad, it is important to research well. 1 Instead, talk to people who have completed their studies from that country. This way you’ll get some real information about the university you’re applying for.
     2
The more you speak to people, the more you’ll end up driving the blues away. Communicating with others will truly be helpful. Not only will it make it easier for you to face personal interviews but also to interact with the local people and fellow students.
    Keep a diary.
Most students feel that the time they spent abroad was the best time for their lives. What’s the better way to keep those moments “alive” forever? 3
    Be prepared for adjustments.
When you land up in a country with a culture that’s completely different from yours, chances are that you’ll experience some levels of culture shock. 4
Consider your stay abroad as an opportunity to discover a new culture and learn new things.
Know what to do in an emergency.
5 Get the details of the U. S. Embassy, including the phone number, and register(登记) yourself and your family members with the U. S. Embassy. This way you’ll know whom to reach out to in case you’re in an emergency.
    A. Develop good communication skills.
    B. Ensure you have all the documents.
    C. However, don’t let that discourage you.
    D. Make sure that you know what to do in the face of emergency.
    E. Keep in touch with your friends at home to avoid homesickness.
    F. Don’t just follow advertisements blindly to choose the university.

    Dear friends,
How time flies! Two weeks have passed since you came to our school for the exchange program, which we all have benefited from. During these two weeks, we have studied and lived together, which gives us the opportunity to promote our friendship. Doing sports as a team has enabled us to know each other better. Your art skills are excellent and admirable, which leaves me a deep impression. I think all our classmates have learned a lot from our communication and the various activities.
Now, on behalf of my schoolmates, I wish you a safe return. I also hope that there will be more events of this kind in the future.
    Thank you.
    Yours,
    Li Hua

l knew this dreaded day would come sooner or later. It came too fast and there I was, in the waiting room of the dental clinic, miserable with butterflies in my stomach.
My parents told me to sit up,stop wringing(拧) my hands, and take deep breaths to keep calm. It worked. l was calm for maybe two seconds when I heard my name being called. l pretended to be deaf but my mother touched me to get up. l forced myself to step forward and immediately stumbled(绊) over a toy and the boy who was playing with it. My clumsiness got me the attention of everyone in the room. Being stared at by so many pairs of eyes was too much and I hurried to the consultation room as fast as I could, leaving the boy crying for his broken toy.
l had refused my parents’ offer to accompany me. I meant to show them that I was brave enough to face the treatment on my own. I regretted it right now. Thankfully, I forgot my anxiety as I looked around the dentist's room. Tools of different sizes were arranged neatly in a plate on the tiny table which was connected to a chair with buttons and a light hanging right over it. I avoided looking at my dentist in the eye as I took my seat on the chair shakily.
l tried to calm myself down, imaging how brave I would be. After a while, I was taken by great surprise when all of a sudden the chair moved and I was lying down facing the bright yellow light. When I caught sight of the dental drill on the plate, panic related to a bad childhood experience involving the drill kicked into me.

I cried out and almost jumped out of the seat. Watching my frightened look, the dentist asked me what was the matter in a soothing voice behind her mask. I felt embarrassed and ashamed for my rude behavior and explained the bad experience in the past to the dentist. After hearing my story, the dentist smiled and encouraged me to forget the past and face the challenge bravely. I felt eased with the dentist's comfort and care. Everything was going smoothly and I was grateful to the dentist.

My parents were waiting at the door anxiously when ran out excitedly. I knew they would find it hard to believe what just happened. I was about to describe the process of treatment when I saw the boy whose toy I just broke. I went up to the boy and his parents and apologized for my misbehavior. All the people sang high praise for my honesty. After that, I followed my parents to the exit to tell them the most proud experience I ever had.
