It provides a nonjudgmental listening ear to the callers while also assisting individuals in coping with mental health issues to prevent serious crises. No previous experience is required but completion of a fiveweek training programme is required. The crisis line is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. every single day. A “shift” consists of 3 hours and we ask that you sign up for 1 shift a week.

(2021·广东广州高三质检)Most kids can walk into a library or bookstore and find hundreds of books to read. But it's not that simple for kids who are blind. They read in a different way. Jenny Lee and other braille (盲文) transcribers take the printed words of a book and change them into a code of raised dots. Blind people can read these dots with their fingers. To know what braille feels like, take a ballpoint pen and press hard onto a piece of paper. Now turn the paper over and touch the raised dot made by the pen point.
When Lee first saw the dots of the braille alphabet, she wondered if she'd ever be able to read and write them easily. She took a class and practised hard for about six months before she passed the final exam: she had to convert 35 pages of a book into braille. Today, Lee works for a publisher. One of her jobs is to change children's books into braille.
To do this, Lee first types the story into a computer and then uses a computer programme to translate it into the braille code. Next, she looks over the translation several times to make sure it's mistakefree. After that, a copy of the braille story is printed with a special printer. Then Lee and a proof reader work together to find and correct any mistakes. When a book is ready, many copies of it are printed. Afterwards, some are sold through websites and others are sent to libraries.
Sometimes, going over a story again and again gets tiring. That's when Lee takes a break. Several of Jenny Lee's coworkers, who are blind, use guide dogs. When the animals aren't working, Lee likes spending a few minutes with them. To her, playing with dogs “is always a pickmeup in the middle of the day”.
“I love this mission,” Lee says.“Through my brain power and my fingers, I am putting the dots into some kid's hands.”

They're not the world's tallest or longest bridges, but a string of river crossings made from tree roots are engineering wonders that contain lessons for modern architects.
The town of Cherrapunji in the Khasi Hills is credited with the world record for annual rainfall of over 75 feet! And in this rainy, wet climate, the rubber fig tree grows with abandon. The tree has a secondary root system that grows up above the ground floor and lets the tree easily grow on top of big stones and even out in the middle of streams. Long ago, the Khasis, a tribe in Meghalaya region, realised they could make use of these roots to their own advantage. By controlling and directing the secondary roots, they have created strong living bridges with which to cross streams and rivers by themselves.
To make a tree grow in a certain direction, the tribespeople use the trunks of a betel nut (槟榔) tree, whose middle is got rid of, as a guidance system. The thin, tender roots of the rubber tree are placed so they grow in the direction of the tree trunk rather than fanning out. Eventually, the roots reach the other side of the river and grow into the soil. This process can take well over a decade before the bridge is fully functional and then over time the bridge grows and strengthens. Rocks are placed along the bridge's sides to improve the footpaths.
Some of these bridges are over 100 feet long and can even support the weight of fifty or more people at a time. These bridges are used daily by the people of the villages around Cherrapunji and a few are thought to be more than 500 years old. There is even a doubledecker bridge, known as the “Umshiang DoubleDecker Root Bridge”, which features two bridges grown right on top of each other. It is thought to be the only bridge of its kind.

(2022·湖北襄阳四中模拟)Despite being used by 1.34 billion people each year, travelling on the Tube in London can actually be quite lonely. An unwritten rule encouraging silence, mixed with classic British reserve, means that even though you're packed into enclosed space with hundreds of other people, the morning trip can leave you feeling somewhat lonely.
One London resident, however, is trying to change this. “You get on the Tube here and it's completely silent and it's strange,” says Jonathan Dunne, an American living in London, who started a campaign of giving out badges (徽章) with the slogan “Tube Chat?” last month, encouraging travellers in London to get talking to one another.
Although Dunne says he's received mostly positive responses, there are always exceptions.
Londoner Brian Wilson responded with a campaign of his own, handing out 500 badges with the words “Don't even think about it” on them. “I can't stand the idea of having to talk to strangers on the Tube on my way to work,” he said.
Michael Robinson, a student from London, agrees. “Being on the Tube is the only peace and quiet some people get on their journeys to and from work. It doesn't need to be spoiled by people coming up and chatting to you,” he says.
“People assume that I just walk up and talk to strangers, which I don't, but it's been a great way to meet people you would never have normally spoken to,” Dunne says. So if you ever end up using public transport in London, why not say hello to the person next to you? Just make sure to check for a badge first.
12. Which partly leads to the silence on the Tube in London?
A. The government's rule.
B. People's desire for quiet.
C. British people's personality.
D. Awareness of personal privacy.
根据第一段第二句“An unwritten rule encouraging silence, mixed with classic British reserve, means that even though you're packed into enclosed space with hundreds of other people, the morning trip can leave you feeling somewhat lonely.”
13. What can the badge with “Tube Chat?” be seen as?
A. A request for keeping silent.
B. A special way of greeting someone.
C. A signal of avoiding being disturbed.
D. An encouragement to start a conversation.
根据第二段中的“who started a campaign of giving out badges (徽章) with the slogan ‘Tube Chat?’ last month, encouraging travellers in London to get talking to one another”可知,试图改变地铁上气氛沉闷这一现状的伦敦居民Dunne提出了倡议人们在地铁上主动发起聊天的运动,徽章上的标语“要在地铁上聊天吗?”
14. Why does the author mention Brian and Micheal?
A. To stress the importance of communication.
B. To show not everyone agrees with Dunne's idea.
C. To prove Londoners are speechless on the Tube.
D. To state the disadvantages of chatting with strangers.
15. What's the best title for the passage?
A. Silence on the Tube!
B. Tube Chat or Not
C. Lonely Travel on the London Tube
D. Tube Passengers Wearing Badges

Often, before you begin to think about filling out college applications in the USA, you had better narrow down your list of schools to around five that are the most appealing to you. The colleges you apply to should be a good fit academically and socially. 1 Making sure your potential colleges are a good fit for you in all of these important areas increases the likelihood that you will stay for all four years.
2 However, it doesn't need to be. There is no need to send applications to 15 or 20 schools. Choose your favourites, research their academic requirements, and apply to those. Of course, in addition to filling in boxes on forms, there are many other helpful tips you can take into account.
One of the most important parts of the college application is the personal essay. The colleges you apply to may limit the potential topics you write on, or you may be able to choose one of your own. Regardless, be sure to focus on a single theme when writing, and reveal facts of yourself, your life, and your personality that make you unique. 3
It is important that every required part of the college application is included. 4 Usually you need to prepare high school transcripts, letters of recommendation, the actual application filled out neatly and completely, and a personal essay.
Some colleges encourage early application for early admission. Other colleges may not consider early admissions for applications received well ahead of the deadline. 5 If early admission is offered, it can be a great idea to take advantage of that opportunity.
A. So always make a note of application deadlines.
B. Check to see what the college wants to receive.
C. Give your teacher enough time to write the letter.
D. Applying for colleges is not a frightening process.
E. An application difficult to read will end up in the trash.
F. In addition, they should be in a location that appeals to you.
G. If you can, note some of important goals you hope to achieve.
