In many sprts, physical cntact is part f the game. But when athletes hit their heads, the hit can cause cncussins (脑震荡).
Cncussins have lng been a cncern fr prfessinal athletes, but they’ve becme mre cmmn amng yung players t. Between 2001 and 2009, the number f kids under 19 visiting dctrs fr cncussins each year increased by 62 percent.
Engineers are develping new helmets(头盔), and new rules are limiting physical cntact in sme sprts. But are these effrts enugh t prtect kids’ brains?
Cncussins can happen during many types f activities. But sprts like ftball and sccer are especially risky. When yu run r jump, yur bdy is mving at an increased speed. A sudden hit causes yu t mve faster in a different directin.
“It’s like when yu’re n a bus and it makes a sudden stp,” says Dr Kevin Crutchfield, an expert at a sprts cncussin centre in Baltimre, Maryland. “Yu hit the inside f the bus.”
This hit damages the brain. It affects the way the brain functins. S sme sprts require athletes t wear helmets. Helmets help reduce the frce f a hit. The hard uter shell spreads the frce ver a larger area. Inside a helmet, a plastic r air-filled lining als helps sften the blw.
Steve Rwsn is an engineer at Virginia Tech. In his lab, he tests hw helmets hld up against different types f hits. N helmet can prevent cncussins cmpletely, says Rwsn. But he’s fund that when wearing a newer ftball helmet, the player’s head desn’t gain speed as much after a hit. That lwers the risk f cncussins.
Many yuth sprts teams have set limits n physical cntact t reduce the risk f cncussins. In sccer, mst cncussins happen as a result f headers—shts r passes made with the head. That’s why many peple think kids shuldn’t head the ball until high schl.
These effrts shuld help, says Crutchfield. But the best way t prevent lng-term brain injuries, he says, is t stp playing immediately if yu suffer cncussins. “Prtect yurself tday s yu can play again tmrrw.”
