素养培优练(一)Ⅰ.阅读理解A Proudly reading my words, I glanced around the room, only to find my classmates bearing big smiles on their faces and tears in their eyes. Confused, I glanced toward my stone-faced teacher. Having no choice, I slowly raised the report I had slaved(苦干) over, hoping to hide myself. What could be causing everyone to act this way?Quickly, I flashed back to the day Miss Lancelot gave me the task. This was the first real task I received in my new school. It seemed simple: go on the Internet and find information about a man named George Washington. Since my idea of history came from an ancient teacher in my home country, I had never heard of that name before. As I searched the name of this fellow, it became evident that there were two people bearing the same name who looked completely different! One invented hundreds of uses for peanuts, while the other led some sort of army across America. I stared at the screen, wondering which one my teacher meant. I called my grandfather for a golden piece of adviceflip(掷) a coin. Headsthe commander, and tailsthe peanuts guy. Ah! Tails, my report would be about the great man who invented peanut butter, George Washington Carver.Weeks later, standing before this unfriendly mass, I was totally lost. Oh well, I lowered the paper and sat down at my desk, burning to find out what I had done wrong. As a classmate began his report, it all became clear, My report is on George Washington, the man who started the American Revolution. The whole world became quiet! How could I know that she meant that George Washington?Obviously, my grade was awful. Heartbroken but fearless, I decided to turn this around. I talked to Miss Lancelot, but she insisted: No re-dos; no new grade. I felt that the punishment was not justified, and I believed I deserved a second chance. As a result, I threw myself heartily into my work for the rest of the school year. Ten months later, that chance unfolded as I found myself sitting in the headmaster's office with my grandfather, now having an entirely different conversation. I smiled and flashed back to the embarrassing moment at the beginning of the year as the headmaster informed me of my option to skip the sixth grade. Justice is sweet!1. What did the author's classmates think about his report?A. Challenging. B. Ridiculous. C. Boring. D. Puzzling.2. Why was the author confused about the task?A. He was unfamiliar with American history.B. He followed the advice and flipped a coin.C. He forgot his teacher's instruction.D. He was new at the school.3. What does the underlined word burning in Para-graph 3 probably mean?A. Annoyed. B. Ashamed. C. Ready. D. Eager.4. In the end, the author turned things around .A. by redoing his task B. through his own effortsC. with the help of his grandfather D. under the guidance of his headmasterBWhether it is arguing until blue in the face or feeling green with envy, the English language is full of idioms linking color to emotion. Now for the first time, scientists have shown that people actually do change colors depending on their feelings. Although it is a small change to skin tone around the nose, eyebrows, cheeks or chin. The effects are picked up subconsciously(潜意识地) by observers, making it very hard to hide emotions. The scientists believe the changes of color are caused by blood flow channeled from the central nervous system depending on our state of mind.We identified patterns of facial coloring that are unique to every emotion we studied, said Doctor Alex Martinez, a cognitive(认知的) scientist and professor at The Ohio State University. We believe these color patterns are due to small changes in blood flow or blood composition(构成) brought about by the central nervous system. We use them to correctly identify how other people are feeling whether we do it consciously or not.For the study, the researchers first took hundreds of pictures of facial expressions and separated the images into different color channels that correspond(符合) to how human eyes see coloreither in a red/green channel or blue/yellow. They then ran the images through computer analysis and found that emotions, such as happy sad”“anger or dislike, all formed unique color patterns.Dislike, for example, creates a blue-yellow cast around the lips, but with a red-green cast around the nose and forehead. Happiness is seen in red at the cheeks and a little blue around the chin, but the same face with a slightly redder forehead and slightly less blue chin registers as surprised. To test whether colors alone could convey emotionswithout smiles, frowns(皱眉) to go along with themthe researchers then put together the different emotional color patterns on pictures of faces with neutral expressions. They found that volunteers were able to spot an emotion up to 75 percent of the time. The effect remained regardless of gender, races or overall skin tone.5. The phrase arguing until blue in the face is used in Paragraph 1 to .A. explain a phenomenon B. introduce the topicC. support an argument D. make comparisons6. What directly causes patterns of facial coloring according to Doctor Alex Martinez?A. Delicate changes in blood. B. Every separate emotion.C. The central nervous system. D. The conscious self-identification.7. What can be learned from the text?A. Colors alone could not convey emotions.B. Each emotion produces a unique color pattern.C. Observers have difficulty identifying people's emotions.D. The emotion dislike just shows a blue-yellow cast around the lips.8. Where is the text mostly probably taken from?A. A health report. B. A book review.C. An educational speech. D. A research article.Ⅱ.七选五Benefits of Early RisingEarly to bed and early to rise makes a person healthy, wealthy and wise.
