Cao Zhawa has been planting trees for most of his life.He lives and works in the heart of Mu Us Sandyland,an area in the southwest part of Inner Mongolia.
In 1958,when he was just 16 years old,Cao started planting trees.Cao’s trees now cover an area of more than 1.3 million square metres.Cao’s forest is worth an estimated 10 million yuan and can produce 100,000 kilograms oxygen, enough to sustain a full-grown adult for nearly a year.
Mu Us Sandyland is one of the places in China most affected by erosion(侵蚀) and desertification. The amount of annual rainfall ranges from 150 to 300 millimetres, while evaporation(蒸发) between 2,000 and 3,000 millimetres.Cao recalls that his growing-up was troubled by sandstorms. This was one of the factors that motivated Cao to join and stay on the tree-planting programme.
Popularly known as the “Green Great Wall”,the project, which is set for completion in 2050,would be a 4,800-kilometre greenbelt of trees and shrubs(灌木) protecting the area from strong winds and preventing soil erosion.Since the start of the Three-North Shelter Forest Programme, millions of people have joined in and become a vital part of the plan.
However, the tree-planters face a host of challenges, with watering the most difficult among them.“When I was young, the level of groundwater was high,” said Cao,“But with less rain, the trees are hard to plant and keep alive.”
Planting trees has also become harder for Cao as he ages. However,he doesn’t want to leave the forest in the care of his children, and he insists the land belongs to the government.“When I die,I just want to be buried under the trees,” Cao said.“Then I will be with them forever.”
24.By listing the figures in paragraph 2,the author wants to .
A.show Cao has had a hard life
    B.praise Cao for his contribution
C.tell us how much oxygen an adult needs
D.make it clear that Cao has made a fortune
Cao’streesnowcoveranareaofmorethan1.3millionsquaremetres.Cao’sforestisworthanestimated10millionyuanandcanproduce100,000kilogramsoxygen,enoughtosustainafull-grownadultfornearlyayear.”
25.Why did Cao make up his mind to plant trees?
A.Evaporation in his hometown was serious.
B.He had no other ways to earn a living.
C.He found it a pleasure to plant trees.
    D.Sandstorms kept striking his hometown.
26.What does Cao Zhawa most care about?
    A.His health. B.His wealth.
    C.Forest ownership. D.Children’s future.
27.What’s the best title for the passage?
    A.An Elder in the Desert
B.A Life Devoted to Planting Trees
    C.Mu Us Sandyland Requires Forest
    D.Cao Zhawa—a Peasant with a Great Dream
HelivesandworksintheheartofMuUsSandyland,anareainthesouthwestpartofInnerMongolia.”

    C
Time and how we experience it have always puzzled us.Physicists have created fascinating theories, but their time is measured by a pendulum(摆钟) and is not psychological time, which leaps with little regard to the clock or calendar. As someone who understood the distinction observed,“When you sit with a nice girl for two hours it seems like a minute, but when you sit on a hot stove,a minute seems like two hours.”
Psychologists have long noticed that larger units of time, such as months and years, fly on swifter wings as we age. They also note that the more time is structured with schedules and appointments, the more rapidly it seems to pass. For example,a day at the office flies compared with a day at the beach.
Expectation and familiarity also make time seem to flow more rapidly.Almost all of us have had the experience of driving somewhere we’ve never been before.Surrounded by unfamiliar scenery, with no real idea of when we’ll arrive,we experience the trip as lasting a long time. But the return trip, although exactly as long, seems to take far less time. The novelty of the outward journey has become routine.
When days become as identical as beads(小珠子) on a string, they mix together, and even months become a single day.To counter this, try to find ways to interrupt the structure of your day—to stop time,so to speak.
Learning something new is one of the ways to slow the passage of time. One of the reasons the days of our youth seems to be full and long is that these are the days of learning and discovery. For many of us,learning ends when we leave school, but this doesn’t have to be.
28.What is the underlined sentence in paragraph 1 used to show?
    A.Psychological time is quite puzzling.
B.Time should not be measured by a pendulum.
C.Physical time is different from psychological time.
D.Physical theory has nothing to do with the true sense of time.
29.Why do units of time fly faster as we grow older?
    A.Our sense of time changes.
B.We spend less time at the beach.
C.More time is structured and scheduled.
D.Time is structured with too many appointments.
30.What does “novelty” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
    A.Excitement. B.Unfamiliarity.
    C.Imagination. D.Amusement.
31.What is the purpose of the passage?
A.To give various explanations about time.
B.To describe how we experience time physically.
C.To show the differences of two kinds of time.
D.To explain why time flies and how to slow it down.

    D
The world’s elderly population is increasing. The number of older people—those age 60 years or older—is expected to double by 2050 and is growing faster than all younger age groups across the globe. That comes with an increasing need for caregivers which can provide 24-hour care, not only at hospitals or nursing homes, but also at private homes.
Already, caregiving robots are programmed to ask questions a nurse would ask and can keep an eye on patients for falls. These robotic assistants are expected to become increasingly marketable and reach 450,000 by 2045 because of the expected caregiver shortage in the USA.
“Unluckily, the hard structure of present caregiving robots prevents them from a safe human-robot interaction(互动),limiting their assistance to only social interaction and not physical interaction,” said Ramses Martinez,an assistant professor in Purdue’s College of Engineering.“After all, would you leave babies or old people in the hands of a robot?”
Recent advances in material science have enabled the production of soft robots with flexible bodies or the ability to reshape when touched, but today the complex design prevents the use of this technology at home.
However,Martinez and other researchers have developed a new design method which shows promise in enabling the production of soft robots using a 3D printer.
“The soft machines move like humans.Their ability to change their body structure and movement to adapt to a wide variety of environments will improve caregiving greatly,” says Martinez.
The researchers are looking for partners to test and bring their technology to market.
32.What does the underlined word “That” in paragraph 1 refer to?
    A.The younger age group.
    B.The group of older people.
    C.The population across the globe.
D.The growth of the elderly population.
和“Thatcomeswithanincreasingneedforcaregiverswhichcanprovide24-hourcare,notonlyathospitalsornursinghomes,butalsoatprivatehomes.”
33.What is the disadvantage of the present caregiving robots?
A.They can’t provide safe physical interaction.
    B.They can’t communicate with patients.
C.They can’t watch patients for falls.
    D.They can’t provide 24-hour care.
    答案A
故选A项。
34.What do we know about Martinez’s new design method?
A.It requires a special kind of 3D printer.
B.It makes the production of soft robots simpler.
C.It has been put onto the market.
D.It is hard for users to master.
35.What is the text mainly about?
A.The robot industry in the future.
B.Effects of the ageing of the population.
C.Robots for the elderly created with 3D printers.
    D.The development of caregiving robots.
People have always wanted to know what the future will look like. Then, how can we know the future will look like? 36 The world has changed a lot in the past 150 years, but we humans are driven by the same basic needs as we were 150 years ago, such as food, sleep, the feeling of being appreciated and loved. 37 No.In addition, generally speaking, the inventions for the last 150 years have been a human effort for freedom and communication,to be able to get in control of the time and world.Since there is still much to do in this area, this will be the focus at least for the next 150 years.
But why do we need to predict the future?Predicting the future is important for two reasons:First,we need to start to think about what kind of future we would like for ourselves and to pass on to the next generation. 38
How about the virtual worlds? It might be possible in the future to experience the sand between your toes, and hear the waves, just lying in your bed at home. 39 So,even if a great invention is there for an affordable price,it’ll never take the place of the common experience if it is not real.
40 What we’ll see in the next 50 years is the transition(过渡) from an oil-dependent society to a new society. Here there’ll be new medicine, continued exploration of space, challenges in the climate change, and new inventions that make life a little easier.
A.Will this change in the next 150 years?
B.So what will the future look like then?
C.Predicting the future can help us in many ways.
D.Well,to understand the future, you have to know the past.
E.However, you’ll never get the feeling of being there.
F.However,no matter how real the experience will feel,it doesn’t happen for real.
G.Then we need to know what decisions we need to make today that will give better results in the future.
    答案36~40 DAGFB

    Dear Eric,
I’m writing to answer your questions about our ways to deal with used books.
A book-recycling project, carried out by our school Student Union, calls on senior three students to be a green school-leaver.They are encouraged to donate their books by leaving them in the boxes outside their classrooms, which not only helps deal with their used books properly but promotes their awareness of environment protection.Since 2010,the project has been well received for it has greatly cut down waste and spread the idea of green life.
    Best wishes!
    Yours sincerely,

On July 23,an older couple driving home from a vacation cut through Redding,California.A wheel on their truck went wrong and the burning pieces which were made by the wheel and the hard road flew into dry grass.A heavy smoke was made and a big fire quickly spread.
Incident Commander Tom Lubas,a 23-year practised hand of Cal Fire, and his colleagues set up a command centre, called in more firefighters, made their great efforts and carved containment(控制) lines. But then the fire exploded from 4,599 acres to nearly 30,000.
Just after noon,Lubas left base camp at the Shasta County fairgrounds in Redding. He had to go to the town to buy food for his colleagues. On the road from his truck window,Lubas watched a 30,000-foot-tall wind column which was filled with wood pieces balloon into the sky, absorbing the hot air as oxygen fed the fire to be greater.
As he drove, his truck recorded the temperature outside:113℃.On the coast,95 miles to the west,it was 59℃.The 54-degree difference caused warm air to shoot up.Late in the afternoon, the strong column would run faster and faster, changing into a huge cyclone(气旋).
Soon as Lubas finished grocery shopping and went back, the sky grew dark. The fire’s behaviour alarmed him that he must go back to work.Minutes later,he got a call from his colleague Don Andrews, saying they received the task to drive to the hills northwest of Redding to help residents get away. But an hour later,Lubas stopped. He was blocked. The road was too narrow for his vehicle.
Ahead of him,the fire tornado(龙卷风) was coming into being. It was dangerous and snakelike,a roll in orange that seemed to fill the entire sky.Flames soared 400 feet in the air.It wouldn’t touch down for another hour, but it was rapidly gaining strength. The tornado would grow to 1,000 feet wide, the size of three football fields, and produce temperatures double those of a typical wildfire.Lubas didn’t know how to drive ahead, but the truck was the only thing to keep him from fire.

Heheardcriesfromahouseonthehillsidewhenwondering. The sky was red and fire was burning wildly around the house. He knew those being trapped needed help immediately. No longer hesitating,he got off the truck and ran quickly towards the house. When he arrived there,he saw the roof already caught fire.He rushed into the room and found an old man and a little girl embraced at the corner.Lubas put the girl on his back and supported the old man to the door with great efforts. At last they arrived at the safety.
SoonLubassawAndrewspullingover, whowasunawareofthedangerfromelectricallinesoverhishead. The fire burned the wire poles and the electrical lines were swaying in the wind.Lubas shouted at him but Andrews didn’t hear Lubas at all. What to do?Lubas drove his truck and rushed towards his colleague. When he reached near,he shouted to him to move quickly.Andrews was saved but Lubas was burned by the wires falling down.Luckily,he was sent to the nearest hospital and treated well. And through joint efforts of more heroes like Lubas, the fire was put out without other casualties.
