第一部分 阅读理解(共两节,满分50分)
第一节(共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。
A
Canberra, the capital of Australia, lies in the southeast of the country. From this city, it is about 290 kilometres to Sydney, and over twice the distance to Melbourne. The former faces the Pacific Ocean, and the latter is dose to the Bass Strait through which ships from Sydney can enter the Indian Ocean.
When the Federal Government of Australia was founded in 1901, no one knew where Australia's capital would be. The two cities of Melbourne and Sydney both wanted the honour. Instead, the founding fathers chose a piece of land between the two cities for the new capital. The government would build a new city called Canberra as the country's capital.
In 1911, the government invited world leading architects to enter designs for Canberra in a contest. An architect from Chicago named Walter Burley Griffin won this international competition for the design of the new city. Construction began in 1913 but was interrupted by World War I (1914 〜 1918). Twenty-four years later, the construction was finished, but the government moved to this new city ten years before it was completed.
At one time, almost everyone in Canberra worked for the government. However, the city today has become a centre of education and a favourite place for tourists. Now people can hold a government job, or they can work in business. They also make a living by teaching or meeting the needs of tourists.
People find life in Canberra relaxing and pleasant. The city is surrounded by beautiful mountains where people can ski. There is a large man-made lake lined with beaches and parks in the centre of Canberra. Canberra is now Australia's largest inland city. Many people living there come from other cities in Australia and other lands. Some come to Canberra to work, and others come here to escape from the busier way of life found in many other cities.
1. According to the passage, how far away is Sydney from Melbourne?
A. About 290 kilometres.
B. About 580 kilometres.
C. About 870 kilometres.
D. About 1160 kilometres.
2. What can we know about Canberra from this passage?
A. A lovely city to which no visitors can go only by sea.
B. A beautiful coastal city with beaches and parks.
C. The largest city and the education centre in Australia.
D. A pleasant place with many mountains and lakes.
3. What does the underlined word "honour" in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A. Being chosen as the capital city of Australia.
B. Building the city of Canberra.
C. Replacing Canberra as the capital city of Australia.
D. Offering funds to build the city of Canberra.

Koalas are pictured everywhere in Australia—on cleaning products, on boxes of chocolate, on sports team shirts. Yet now koalas live only in pockets along the east coast.
They once inhabited the entire coastline. The koala population dropped after farmers cut down many of the forests where koalas lived, and hunters killed koalas for their fur.
By the early 1900s, "koalas were basically shot out of South Australia," says ecologist Bill Ellis, who studies the relationships between living things and their environments.
I recently joined Ellis and his team in a forest on St Bees Island, 19 miles off the northeastern coast of Australia, with eight other volunteers. The island is a natural laboratory, yielding findings that may help protect koalas elsewhere on the continent.
The volunteers searched the island for koalas in the blue gum trees. When we found a koala, we gathered information about the trees in the area.
The blue gum tree is a species of the eucalyptus tree(桉树) in which the funny leaf-eaters spend most of their time. Eucalyptus trees are native to Australia, and their leaves are the main food source for koalas. Although koalas can walk on the ground, they are better suited for life in the canopy, the high cover of branches and leaves in a forest.
What has Ellis, research told him so far? The population of koalas on St Bees Island seems to be healthy. Yet Ellis wonders whether the koalas might be heading for hard times. The island is overrun with wild goats, and Ellis thinks the goats are eating the small blue gum trees.
Without those trees, the koalas will run out of food in the future. Ellis hopes more research will help him understand how to protect the blue gum trees and the koalas that depend on them. "I think that's what everyone is trying to do—to make a difference," Ellis says.
1. What can we know from the first paragraph?
A. Koalas, pictures can be found everywhere in the world.
B. Koalas in Australia like to eat chocolate.
C. Koalas live only on the east coast of Australia.
D. You can buy the pictures of koalas only on the east coast of Australia.
2. What's the work of the volunteers in Ellis' team?
A. To collect information about the trees that koalas depend on.
B. To prevent farmers from cutting down the forest.
C. To save the koalas injured by local hunters.
D. To study the living things and the environment in the forest.
3. What will Ellis most probably start to do next?
A. To keep the population of koalas on St Bees Island healthy.
B. To kill all the goats on the island.
C. To find some new foods for goats.
D. To protect blue gum trees for koalas.
4. What's the purpose of writing this passage?
A. To call for people to concern about the life of koalas.
B. To record the trip to Australia for watching koalas.
C. To present some basic knowledge of koalas' life.
D. To introduce the ecosystem of wildlife in Australia.

Tower Bridge is a bascule bridge in London, over the River Thames. It is close to the Tower of London, which gives it its name. It is sometimes incorrectly referred to as London Bridge, which is the next bridge upstream(在上游). It is one of five London bridges now owned and maintained by the Bridge House Estates.
In the second half of the nineteenth century, increased commercial(贸易的) development in the East End of London led to a requirement for a new river crossing downstream of London Bridge. A Special Bridge or Subway Committee was formed in 1876 to find a solution to the river crossing problem. It opened the design of the crossing to public competition. Over 50 designs were received. The judgment of the designs was surrounded by argument, and it wasn't until 1884 that a design sent by Horace Jones was sanctioned.
Construction of the bridge started in 1886 and took about 8 years' hard work of 432 construction workers. Over 70,000 tons of concrete were sunk into the river bed to support the construction. Over 11,000 tons of steel provided the framework(框架) for the towers and walkways. Horace Jones died in 1887, and another engineer took over the project. The bridge was opened in 1894.
The bridge sits almost directly above the Tower Subway, the world's first underground tube railway (1870), which, until the bridge was opened, was the shortest way to cross the River Thames. A computer system was installed(安装) in 2000 to control the raising and lowering of the bascule. However, this has proved less reliable than expected, resulting in the bridge being stuck in the open or closed position on a number of occasions.
1. What does Paragraph 1 say about Tower Bridge?
A. It's named after a famous person.
B. It's another name for London Bridge.
C. It's not far from the Tower of London.
D. It's the only bridge over the River Thames.
2. Which of the following can best replace the underlined word "sanctioned" in Paragraph 2?
A. Tried.
B. Received.
C. Discovered.
D. Passed.
3. What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A. The history of Tower Bridge.
B. The building of Tower Bridge.
C. The influence of Tower Bridge.
D. The importance of Tower Bridge.
4. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. Many breakdowns have happened to Tower Bridge.
B. The computer system works better than expected.
C. The underground tube railway has a history of less than 20 years.
D. The Tower Subway is the shortest way to cross the River Thames.

第二节 (满分25分)

Deep in the forest, my husband and I had fun climbing over and crawling under the downed trees that blocked the dirt path before us. It was May, yet we walked up a snow-covered hill.
When we noticed our jeans were wet up to our knees, it did not dampen(减弱) our spirits. Not once did we say, "Let's turn around." This was our vacation, and we were on an adventure. Little did we know this was the beginning of many more surprises.
The trail was marked as an easy one-kilometer hike, yet we were already walking a long distance. Our lightheartedness(轻松自在) stopped when we came out into a clearing and saw a parking lot without our rental car in it. As my eyes scanned the surroundings, nothing looked familiar. My heart raced(急速跳动). I realized we were lost in a national park that did not officially open.
Usually, I am the calm one in the relationship, but my husband surprised me with his calmness. This did not comfort me; in fact, it heightened(增加) my fear. As we walked, I asked my husband to call for help, but there was no cell phone signal in this isolated area.
It was awfully quiet except for our footsteps hitting the road, and my heavy breathing. My husband suggested we conserve energy and walk slower. With each step on the road, my feet and thighs(大腿) hurt while my mind raced with thoughts about people who got lost in the Canadian woods for days.
My gaze sharpened. I noticed everything around me: the trees, rocks and snow. I thought we could eat the snow on the ground in case we needed water. For the first time in my life, I was ready and willing to get a ride, but we did not meet a single car on the road. Silently, I prayed multiple times. We focused on each other, made joint decisions and connected through gratitude. We managed to stay on the main road and walked straight on.
Paragraph 1:
My husband suddenly spotted a small building on a hill in the distance. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Just then, a friendly woman appeared, saying, "Hello." ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

答案:
Paragraph 1:
My husband suddenly spotted a small building on a hill in the distance. In no time did we find ourselves heading for it. We were filled with hope and excitement to find such a building in the middle of nowhere. We climbed up the hill at a swinging pace as if all the pains were gone. As we approached, a sign came into sight, which read: Administration Office. However, it was not open for business. The empty hall made us nervous all at once. We stood there hopelessly, wondering what to do next.
Paragraph 2:
Just then, a friendly woman appeared, saying, "Hello." I could barely hold back my enthusiasm and blurted out, "We're lost!" She comforted us and provided a room for us to take a break. Seeing we were cold and hungry, she treated us to hot chocolate. After studying the map, we figured out that our car was parked over three kilometers away. She offered us a ride back to our car and we accepted gladly. I felt relieved to see our rental car again. What a blessing to have such an unforgettable experience!
