The Art of Mime
What do you think of when you see a man with a white painted face, wearing white gloves and a black hat? In the West this scene might come to mind when they think of mime. Mime is the art of acting without using speech. The word can also refer to a person who performs this art. This type of art has grown and changed over the centuries. What began as a simple form of communication is now a form of theater.
▲
Mine is one of the earliest forms of self-expression. As languages were developing, humans still used their bodies to speak. Mime first became an art form in ancient Greece. Silent actors performed everyday scenes using gestures(动作). These plays often taught a lesson about values. When the Romans got control of Greece, they took the art of mime back to Italy. There they made it their own. Even after the fall of the Roman Empire, mime remained.
In the mid-1500s mime became a form of street performance in Italy. Mime performers wore masks and acted out comedies. Because masks hid their faces, they could make fun of any part of a situation in society. Everyone enjoyed the performance— young and old, rich and poor.
Mime also traveled around Europe. Because their art had no words, there was no language problem. Mime became especially popular in France. French performers created famous mime characters which shape today's mime.
Mime like a Professional
Want to try mine? To communicate only through body language; no talking allowed. Watch people's facial expressions and gestures closely and practice copying them. Create a story to act out—this will be more interesting to your audience. No props(道具)? No worries! You can create anything you need out of thin air. Stores play music to change the way customers feel. Clothing stores for teenagers play popular music. It is exciting and makes the customers feel happy. But music does more than that. It can change the way a person shops.

Slow music makes people slow down. In restaurants with slow music, customers spend more time eating. Slow music also slows down customers in supermarkets. Customers notice more products as they walk through the store. With slow music in supermarkets, sales go up by 38 percent.
Familiar(熟悉的) music gives shoppers a good idea of time. People know the beginning, middle, and end of a familiar song. When customers hear music that is not familiar, they don’t notice the time. Hip-hop Planet
Have you heard of hip-hop music? 101 ? In fact, countries like France, Brazil and even Japan have their own hip-hop cultures. But where did this strange speaking-singing style come from? Many centuries ago, in West Africa, traditional storytellers played musical instruments while they were telling stories. When this tradition travelled from West Africa to the USA, it developed into different musical styles. For example, blues and jazz. 102 . In the 1970s, there were many poor areas in New York. There wasn’t any money for music lessons in schools, so kids made their own music Bands such as Teenagers Africa and DJs there played their records outside in the streets. Everybody joined in. Every week, there were talented new dancers, new DJs and new MCs. Hip-hop culture was born.
Then, it was 1980 when 103 . I was at a party in New York. There was a young DJ at the party and he was playing records. While he was putting a record on, a kid picked up a microphone (话筒) and began tapping (打拍子). Some other kids were break-dancing (跳舞) to the music. It was loud and boring, and I hated it. I preferred jazz.
However, 104 . Today’s successful American artists like Missy and her friend Tim heard it on the radio when they were growing up.
The last time I heard hip-bop, I was in West Africa and 105 . I was going to interview a traditional storyteller when I met a young hip-hop artist. He told me there are hundreds of rap groups in Africa today. We live on a hip-hop planet.

“For as long as I can remember, mom has been a middle-aged woman, but no one told me she used to be a young girl.” This is a line from the film Hi, Mom, as well as the way director and star Jia Ling once felt about her own mother.
Released on Feb 12, the film is the directorial debut (导演首秀) of 39-year-old filmmaker Jia. It has gotten a high score of 8.1 on the movie rating website Dou Ban. Many people said they were touched by its raw (质朴的) emotion.
The film is based on the real life story of Jia and her mother, showing her missing and regret at failing to see her mother before she died. To make the film more moving and interrsting, Jia made it a time travel story. She goes back to 1981 becomes friends with her own mom, Li Huanying. She risks giving up her own life and disappearing to make sure that her mother has a better future.
In the movie, Li is more of a young girl rather than a mother. As Jia says in the movie, “She is not only my mom, but also herself.” Many women who helped make the film, including Jia herself, helped the movie’s female roles shine in ways that had nothing to do with their looks.

However, they were completely different from each other—one was very quiet and the other was very outgoing. They were a really interesting pair.
The most successful thing about this trip was that we planted 1103 plants during the last two weeks. That was really encouraging. I felt very happy that I had done something useful for the earth with my own hands.
On this trip,I learned to watch and think more about the world around me,rather than just caring about myself.
We should be kind to life. We should not only treat human beings well, but also animals, plants and nature. After this trip,I feel that I have become more active and outgoing. I won't miss another trip like this in the future.

Yangge is an interesting folk dance. The performers dance to the music with handkerchiefs or fans in their hands. It’s the most popular festival performance in many places, especially in the countryside of northern China.
Many people love yangge very much. Most of them are young men and young women. But some are even old ladies. Nearly every village in northern Shaanxi Province has yangge groups. They begin to rehearse (排练) almost a month before the Lunar New Year’s Day. On that day, after eating jiaozi, the yangge group begins paying New Year calls from house to house.
They wish people a happy New Year, and then they do the yangge dance in the street. Some young men often play the drums, and the performers begin to wave red silk bands. The hosts set off firecrackers (鞭炮) to welcome the dancers and invite them to taste their home-made rice wine. The sounds of songs, drums and firecrackers blend, forming a festival atmosphere in the village.

There is a sign at a Korean university asking tourists not to step into the grass to take photos. The sign is not written in Korean or English; it is written in Chinese.
These signs, and signs in other countries warning Chinese tourists about their behavior, have shamed many Chinese who worry about the image of the country.
Over 70 million Chinese tourists made overseas trips last year and spent $102 billion, more than the $84 billion spent by American and German tourists. For many Chinese tourists, it was their first trip abroad and they didn't know about foreign ways. And some of these tourists took their bad habits from China with them.
Wang Yang, a Chinese deputy prime minister (国务院副总理), said, "They (the tourists) speak loudly in public, carve words or numbers on tourist attractions, cross the road when the traffic lights are still red and spit anywhere. It damages(毁坏) the image of the Chinese people and has a very bad influence."
Before you travel to a foreign country, it's important to learn some things about the country and its culture. You are guests in the country and it's important to respect(尊重) your hosts.
The most important thing is to believe your illusion(假象). If you believe it's real, your audience will, too!

Stores play music to change the way customers feel. Clothing stores for teenagers play popular music. It is exciting and makes the customers feel happy. But music does more than that. It can change the way a person shops.
According to studies, the volume (音量)of music changes how people shop. Customers shop quickly when store music is very loud. They hurry through the store, but they buy just as much. When music is quiet, customers shop slowly. Customers take time to look at the products and talk with the salespeople. Quiet music is good for products that take time and information to buy.
When they don’t notice the time, they spend more time shopping and buy more. People remember past experiences and feelings when they hear familiar music. Many stores play old, happy music so customers feel good. When customers hear new music, they forget about the world outside of the store. “For as long as I can remember, mom has been a middle-aged woman, but no one told me she used to be a young girl.” This is a line from the film Hi, Mom, as well as the way director and star Jia Ling once felt about her own mother.

Being tired of my noisy life in the city,I wanted to breathe some fresh air and experience a new kind of life. So I joined the “Earth Care Project”.When I set out,I took nothing with me but some bad emotion (情绪).However, when the trip was over,my backpack was full of things, including joy, sadness, beautiful views and some knowledge about life.
In this exchange project,I was glad that I could get along well with the strange participants (参加者)from other countries. We tried to take care of each other. The group leaders,Paul and Reg,were both nice. They were very knowledgeable about plants, animals and the environment.
