    课题

    Unit2  Wildlife Protection课时

    教学目标

    Knowledge objectives: Let students learn about the fact that wild species are disappearing from the earth at an alarming rate.

    Skill objectives: Guide students to pay attention to visual resources such as pictures and learn to get information from them.

    Emotional objectives: Enhance the awareness and responsibility of protecting wild species.

    Thinking quality objectives: Consider the impact of human activity on wild species.

    教学重点

    Guide students to use the graph prediction strategy to accurately understand the listening text.

    教学难点

    Communicate with classmates in simple English about the survival status and conservation measures of wild animals.

    教学准备

    1. familiarize current topic games to raise students’ interests;
    2. preparation of some selective answers in case of non response.

    教学过程

    Step 1Lead-in

    Introduce the topic of endangered wildlife along with related vocabulary and warm up for the activities which follow.

    Show the unit cover picture and lead the students into the topic by asking questions.

    (1) What do you think of when you see this photo?

    Suggested answers: When I see this photo I think about Africa and all the amazing animals that live there.

    (2) How much do you know about elephants?

    Suggested answers: Elephants' large ears help them to hear and making them look larger when they are in danger. Their tusks are used for finding food and for protection. Their trunk is a versatile tool which they use for many things including to breathe, smell, pick things up and to suck up water.

    (3) Do you think that elephants are an endangered species?

    Suggested answers: African elephants are the world's largest land mammal. All male and female African elephants have tusks whereas only one Asian type does. African elephants also have a larger rounder head than Asian ones.

    Elephants’ tusks are made of ivory, a material which has historically been a much desired and is the main reason they have been hunted.

    (4) What other wild animals are in danger?

    Suggested answers: Elephant, panda, whale, antelope, koala, South China tiger, Yangtze River dolphin and …

     

    Step 2 new words

    Teach new words and help students read and learn.

    illegal adj.不合法的;非法的

    illegal activities  违法行为;不法活动

    on earth 究竟;到底

    average n.平均数;平均水平adj.平均的;正常的;普通的

    on average 平均

    extinction n.灭绝

    mass extinction  大量消亡

    wildlife extinction 野生动物灭绝

    habit n.习惯;惯常行为;习性

    habitat n. (动植物的)生活环境; 栖息地

     

    Step 3 Pre-listening

    Practise listening for detailed information. Ask students to look at the poster and extract information from the posters.

    (1) What message do these posters share?

    Suggested answers: The message of these posters is that wildlife is under threat.

    (2) Which one moves you the most? Why?

    Suggested answers: The second poster moves me the most because it is very bad that whole species are being lost, and the image of animals falling through an hourglass shows how serious it is and how time is running out to protect these species …

     

    step 4 while-listening

    Listen to the first part and complete the passage in activity 2.

    Let the students read the passage of activity 2 first, and try to fill in the blanks with appropriate words. At the same time, pay attention to the meaning of the new words.

    Listen and fill in the blanks. Then check the answers.

    Answers: wildlife, loss, protect.

     

    Tell students they will hear the audio dialogue again without pausing. You can choose the first or second part, or both. Ask them to write down just the key words of the dialogue. They shouldn't write down "little" words such as pronouns, articles, and prepositions.

    Then in pairs they must compare their notes and reconstruct the original dialogue before reading it to the class. It does not have to be exactly the same, but it must be grammatically correct.

    (1) How many elephants are killed on average every day?

    Answers: 54

    (2) What did Prince William say about China?

    Answers: B

    Step 5 discuss

    Give students a chance to apply what they have learnt in the previous listening activities through a discussion.

    What does "Change begins with you" mean?

    Suggested answers: It means that if we want things to change, we must change ourselves first and not wait for others to change first. I think it tells us that we must be the change we want to see in the world.

    Wrap up and give students opportunities to apply what they have learnt in the previous listening activities through discussion and adapting a role-play.

    (1) What do you know about the animals in the photos?

    (2) What is being done to help them?

     

    Step6 pronunciation

    Practise reading and listening for syllable stress.

    Work in pairs. Read the words aloud to each other, and put them into the correct groups.

    Suggested answers:

    Practise identifying the stress patterns of the polysyllabic words and pronouncing them.

    Ask students to listen to the conversation in Activity 5, practise identifying the stress patterns of the polysyllabic words.
