Cleaning yur plate may nt help feed hungry children tday, but the ld advice f mthers everywhere may help reduce fd waste frm the farm t the frk, help the envirnment and make it easier t feed the wrld's grwing ppulatin.
Hard data is still being cllected, but experts in Chicag say abut 30% t 50% f the fd prduced in the wrld ges uneaten. The average American thrws away 33 punds f fd each mnth—abut $40 wrth, which means each persn thrws away almst 400 punds f fd every year. The US Department f Agriculture says that 23% f eggs and an even higher rate f prduce end up in the trash(垃圾).
“We frget we have all these fresh fruit—and vegetables, and at the end f the week we have t thrw them away,” said Esther Gve, a mther f three yung children in Suth Berwick, Maine. “Nw, I dn't buy as much fresh prduce as I used t.”
But the effect f fd waste arrives far beynd the kitchen. Agriculture (农业) is the wrld's largest user f water, a big cnsumer f energy and majr emitter f greenhuse gases during prductin. Experts say reducing waste is a simple way t cut stress n the envirnment and can ease pressure n farmers, wh will be called n t feed an expected 9 billin peple arund the wrld in 2050, cmpared with abut 7 billin tday.
N matter hw sustainable (可持续的) farming is, if the fd's nt getting eaten, it's nt sustainable and it's nt a gd use f ur resurces. In richer natins, fruit and vegetables end up in the trash because they aren't pretty enugh t meet cmpanies' standards, and have gne bad in a hme refrigeratr r aren't eaten at a restaurant. In develping cuntries, much fd ges wrng befre it gets t the market because f pr rads and lack f refrigeratin. High fd prices are anther reasn, because sme peple can't affrd the fd that's prduced.

“Creativity is the key t a brighter future,” say educatin and business experts. Here is hw schls and parents can encurage this imprtant skill in children.
If Dick Drew had listened t his bss in 1925 , we might nt have the prduct that we nw think f as great imprtance: a new type f tape. Drew wrked fr the Minnesta Mining and Manufacturing Cmpany. At wrk he develped a kind f material strng enugh t hld things tgether. But his bss tld him nt t think mre abut the idea. Finally, using his wn time, Drew imprved the tape, which nw is used everywhere by many peple. And his frmer cmpany learned frm its mistake. Nw it encurages peple t spend 15 percent f their wrking time just thinking abut and develping new ideas.
Creativity is nt smething ne is just brn with, nr is it necessarily a character f high intelligence. The fact that a persn is highly intelligent des nt mean that he uses it creatively. Creativity is the matter f using the resurces ne has t prduce new ideas that are gd fr smething.
Unfrtunately, schls have nt tried t encurage creativity. With strng attentin t test results and the develpment f reading, writing and mathematical skills, many educatrs give up creativity fr crrect answers. The result is that children can gain infrmatin but can't recgnize ways t use it in new situatins. They may knw the rules crrectly but they are unable t use them t wrk ut practical prblems.
It is imprtant t give children chices. Frm the earliest age, children shuld be allwed t make decisins and understand their results. Even if it's chsing between tw fd items fr lunch, decisinmaking helps thinking skills. As children grw lder, parents shuld try t let them decide hw t use their time r spend their mney. This is because the mst imprtant character f creative peple is a very strng desire t find a way ut f truble.
4.What did the cmpany where Drew nce wrked learn frm its mistake?
A.It shuld encurage peple t wrk a lnger time.
B.Peple shuld be discuraged t think freely.
C.Peple will d better if they spend mst f their wrking time develping new ideas.
D.It is necessary fr peple t spend sme f their wrking time cnsidering and develping new ideas.
5.We can knw frm the passage that creativity is ______.
A.smething that mst peple are brn with
B.smething that has nthing t d with intelligence at all
C.a way f using what ne has learned t wrk ut new prblems
D.smething that is nt imprtant t the life in the future at all
    6.Why dn't schls try t encurage creativity?
A.They dn't think creativity educatin is imprtant.
B.They dn't want their students t make mistakes.
    C.They pay n attentin t examinatin marks.
D.They think it impssible t develp creativity in class.
7.What shuld parents d when their children decide hw t spend their mney?
    A.Allw them t have a try.
B.Try t help them as much as pssible.
    C.Take n ntice f whatever they d.
D.Order them t spend the least mney.
