    A

Most Chinese diners pick up food from public plates with the same pair of chopsticks that they then use to eat, or serve others. 1 But the government hopes to change habits by urging people to use a second pair of chopsticks—just for serving.

2 Dr. Zhong Nanshan and Dr. Zhang Wenhong, outspoken infectious disease experts who have become celebrities since the start of the outbreak, have voiced their support. The authorities across the country are running advertisements with slogans like: “The distance between you and civilized dining is just one pair of serving chopsticks.”

Some restaurants and diners have taken notice of the call. 3 In the eastern Chinese city of Hangzhou, more than 100 excellent restaurants have formed a “Serving Chopsticks Alliance.”

4 Many see sharing food with one’s own chopsticks as among the most real expressions of China’s communal (shared) culture and emphasis on family, no less inseparable than hugging is to Americans or the cheek kiss is to the French. 5.

By contrast, wheat-eating northerners, and particularly the men, take pride in what Chinese call “eating big and drinking big,” without care for such petty (small and unimportant) concerns as germs and bacteria. Never mind a small, recent experiment by government experts who found that the level of bacteria in dishes for which serving chopsticks were used was as little as 0.4 percent the level of dishes shared in the regular fashion.

    AStill, resistance is strong.

BThey are offering discounts to diners who use serving chopsticks.

CThe “dining table revolution” will have a big influence on people’s life.

DState news agencies are calling it a “dining table revolution”.

E.Serving chopsticks are typically associated with formal settings, like banquets and meals with strangers.

F.An increasing number of people will use serving chopsticks.

    G.Double dipping is normal.

One of the greatest biologists the work has ever seen was Charles Darwin. Darwin was born to a middle-class family in Shrewsbury, England, in February, 1809. His father was the leading doctor of the town.

11He loved to walk through the woods looking at plants and birds. At the proper age, he was admitted into Shrewsbury School. There he studied Latin, classical literature, and ancient history. Young Charles thought that these subjects were dull and useless. He would have preferred scientific studies. As a result, he did poorly.

In 1825, at the age of sixteen, Darwin was sent to Scotland to study medicine. 12He once wrote to his sister that his medical courses were completely stupid. By then, Darwin's father knew that his son would never become a doctor.

Darwin's father then sent him to Cambridge to become a clergyman(牧师). During his Cambridge years, Darwin loved to collet beetles(甲虫), but to him it was only a hobby. He didn't take it seriously. 13That was Professor John Henslow, the head of the Botany Department.

Somehow, Darwin managed to graduate from Cambridge in 1831. Upon graduation, Professor Henslow arranged for him to go with Captain Fitzroy on a survey trip around the world. During the voyage, Darwin collected rocks, bones, and insects. He took many notes on all that he observed. 14

The widely believed theory in those days was that God created each creature separately and individually. 15In it, he explained his theory of evolution by natural selection. The theory was instantly and very strongly attacked. Darwin was accused of destroying religion and insulting(侮辱)the human race. Today, however, Darwin's theory is considered to be one of the major discoveries of modern science.

AOne person at Cambridge, however, did.

BAs a boy, Darwin showed a great interest in living things.

CHe studied there for two years and continued to do poorly.

DShrewsbury was a busy market town surrounded by rich farmlands.

E.In 1859, Darwin published his famous book On the Origin of Species.

F.The thoughts that led to his theory of evolution were beginning to form.

G.By the time Darwin died in 1882, he was recognized as one of England's greatest scientists.

Proms (高中舞会) are big news in Britain these days. They are often held in June or July, around the end of exam time or the end of term. The idea is to have fun with your school friends and celebrate your time and achievements at school. 16 A prom organizer provides everything for the special event including the party location, food, music and clothes.

    Clothes and beauty

Young people like to dress up for their prom. For the special night lots of girls swap their uniform for an elegant evening dress and high heels and boys dress up in a suit with a tie and smart shoes.

The right hairstyle and make-up are important too. Some beauty salons offer a special “prom dear” which includes hair, make-up, eyelashes, nails and a spray tan

    Cars

If the budget is not a problem, some will hire a sports car. Other young people like to travel by truck or in large 4x4 vehicles. 18 Part of the fun for some prom-goers is to drive around town in their best clothes and make sure that everyone sees them.

    Money

The school prom is big business. According to a recent report the average prom costs parents over 200 per teenager. The cost can include dinner, new clothes, shoes, a visit to the hairdressers, a spray tan and probably car hire.

19 Some teenagers work part-time to cover their prom expenses. Popular jobs include babysitting, shop work and working as a waiter or waitress.

    An American tradition

20 Many adults see the prom as an import from the USAThey say that American TV programs and films such as ‘High School Musical’ have a big influence on their kids and those parents are not such abig fan.

AA tan is fashionable with both boys and girls.

BThe party can start on the way to the dinner or dance.

CParents particularly like to do the “deal” in a formal way.

DSome pupils also have a school prom when they finish primary school.

E.Not all families have money to spend on their teenager's prom of course.

F.Frankly speaking, the modem British school prom is not popular with some parents.

G.The school can organize the prom or they can pay a professional organization to arrange it.

The New Year is always a time of new beginnings, a time for a change, and a time to set goals.21 Here are some tips for setting career goals in a new year:

    Reflect on Your Year

Take some time to consider your career in the year that just ended. If you dislike your job, try to figure out why. Is it due to the work itself, or something about the workplace? If you like what you do, and it’s outside factors that you find limiting, it might make sense to make your goal to find a new position. 22

    Engage in Career Research

23Start to read about careers of interest by browsing websites or publications at your local bookstore or library. Identify two new careers to research each week, and keep a diary of your interest in each. For those fields with a genuine appeal, make a list of questions to research so that you can fully evaluate the suitability of that career for you.

Check Out What Your Friends Do

24 Think about the roles of colleagues, suppliers, or clients that might be a good fit for you, and interview them about the nature of their work. Share your skills list with them, and ask for help brainstorming career options that might be worth considering within their sections.

    Gain New Skills

If you want to take up a new career, consider volunteering to gain additional experience, or taking classes to learn new skills.25

AAlways be ready to learn and aim to be better.

BActivate your curiosity about the work lives of people in your social network.

CIf you are totally in love with what you do, aim higher, and strive to be better.

DSpend some time assessing what you like and dislike about your current situation.

E.Many people look forward to changing career paths and aiming for bigger dreams.

F.The more you research, the easier it will be to make decisions and set goals for yourself.

G.The same holds true if you feel positive about your field, but are ready for more significant responsibilities.

    F

There are many friends that will come into your life -- some will gradually lose touch, some will be getting closer, and some you will actively choose not to be friends with. 26 But your old friends seem to stick around, and no matter how near or far they are, they continue to be a part of your life.

From old friends we learn how much we grow. 27 They encourage us to do better and even they force us to do better. We know that if we’re happy with who we’ve become, they may play a role in that process.

The sense of freedom that comes with old friends is new friends failing to bring. You don’t need to make a good impression with people who know you well.

28 The youth is often filled with many playful moments and careless choices. There is a vivid recollection of difficult periods that you have been through.

With old friends, you realize true friendships are difficult to create, to cultivate, and to hold onto. 29

Old friends hold a mirror in front of us and allow us to see how far we’ve gone, and how far we still have to go to achieve our goals. 30 Old friends remind us that the past is both good and bad, and that the future is something to look forward to. No matter how time goes by, when we’re with our old friends, we will feel at home ---- where we can be stupid and happy with people who love us.

AWhen you’re a child, making friends does not require too much effort.

BWith old friends there is often great laughter when you share your past.

CThey are the people who have similar experience and simple innocence.

DThis fact not only exists in our schooldays, but also will continue to the years to come.

E.Old friends show us all the parts that we still need to change, even if some of the parts we may never change.

F.They’re the people who’ve usually witnessed everything from our major accomplishments to our small mistakes.

G.The profound gratitude that you have for having a friend long enough to call them an “old friend” feels wonderful.

    2

根据上一段中“But the government hopes to change habits by urging people to use a second pair of chopsticks—just for serving.(但是政府希望通过敦促人们使用第二只筷子来改变习惯——仅仅是为了夹菜)”以及后文“Dr. Zhong Nanshan and Dr. Zhang Wenhong, outspoken infectious disease experts who have become celebrities since the start of the outbreak, have voiced their support. The authorities across the country are running advertisements with slogans like: “The distance between you and civilized dining is just one pair of serving chopsticks.”(疫情爆发以来,知名的传染病专家钟南山医生、张文宏医生也纷纷表示支持。全国各地的有关部门都打出了这样的广告:你和文明用餐之间的距离只是一双服务筷。”)”可知,上文提到政府希望人们改变使用筷子的习惯,后文则提到了全国各地有关部分打出服务筷的广告,可见本句是在说明国家对此举的看法或称呼。故D选项国家新闻机构称之为餐桌革命’”符合语境,故选D

    3

根据上文“Some restaurants and diners have taken notice of the call.(一些餐馆和就餐者已经注意到了这一呼声)”以及后文“In the eastern Chinese city of Hangzhou, more than 100 excellent restaurants have formed a “Serving Chopsticks Alliance.”(在中国东部城市杭州,100多家优秀的餐厅组成了服务筷子联盟”)”可知,上文提到了一些餐馆和就餐者已经注意到了政府关于服务筷的这一呼声,故本句应承接上文说明他们的做法,B选项中They指代上文Some restaurants and diners。

    4

根据后文“Many see sharing food with one’s own chopsticks as among the most real expressions of China’s communal (shared) culture and emphasis on family, no less inseparable than hugging is to Americans or the cheek kiss is to the French.(许多人认为,用自己的筷子夹菜是中国公共文化和强调家庭的最真实的表现之一,就像美国人的拥抱和法国人的脸颊吻一样不可分割)”可知,后文提到许多人认为用自己的筷子夹菜是中国公共文化和强调家庭的最真实的表现之一,即他们不同意使用服务筷,故本段与上文构成转折,说明政府的这一呼声遇到了阻力。

    5

根据上文“Many see sharing food with one’s own chopsticks as among the most real expressions of China’s communal (shared) culture and emphasis on family, no less inseparable than hugging is to Americans or the cheek kiss is to the French.(许多人认为,用自己的筷子夹菜是中国公共文化和强调家庭的最真实的表现之一,就像美国人的拥抱和法国人的脸颊吻一样不可分割)”可知,上文提到许多人认为用自己的筷子夹菜是中国公共文化和强调家庭的最真实的表现,本句为本段最后一句,故应说明这部分人对于服务筷的看法。
