After 20 years as a full-time wife and mther, I decided t be a schl bus driver fr I lved kids. When I think abut my years f bus driving, many things crwd in, but mstly, I remember Charlie.
Charlie, eight years ld, with blnd hair and crystalline gray eyes, began riding my bus in September f my furth year driving. They all had stries t tell me abut their summers. Charlie, thugh, ignred me. He didn’t even answer when I asked his name.
Frm that day n, Charlie was a trial. If a fight brke ut, I didn’t have t turn my head t knw wh had started it. If a girl was crying, chances were Charlie had pulled her hair. N matter hw I spke t him, gently r firmly, he wuldn’t say a wrd. He’d just stare at me with thse big gray eyes f his.
I later fund ut Charlie’s father was dead and he didn’t live with his mther. He deserves my patience, I thught. T my cheery “Gd Mrning”, he was silent. When I wished him a happy Hallween, he sneered (冷笑). Still I was sure that this child needed t feel sme warmth frm me. S, when he’d pass by, I’d pat him n the arm r smetimes gave him a hug.
Tward the end f that year, the kids n my bus gave me a small trphy inscribed (刻) “T the Best Bus Driver Ever”. I prpped it up n the dashbard (仪表盘). On tp I hung a small tin heart that a little girl had given me. In red paint she had written, “I lve Plly and Plly lves me.”
The next day, I was delayed a few minutes talking t the principal. When I gt n the bus I realized that the tin heart was gne. “Des anyne knw what happened t the little heart that was up here?” I asked. Fr nce with 39 children, there was silence.
One by piped up, “Charlie was the first ne n the bus. I bet he tk it.” Other children jined the chrus, “Yeah! Charlie did it! Search him!”
I asked Charlie t cme frward, stuck my hand int his pcket and immediately I felt it—the small tin heart. Charlie stared at me and seemed t be waiting fr what he’d cme t expect frm the wrld. I was abut t pull ut the tin heart when I stpped myself. Let him keep it, a vice seemed t whisper.
“It must have fallen ff befre I gt here,” I said t the kids. “I’ll prbably find it back at the dept.” Withut a wrd, Charlie returned t his seat. When he gt ff at his stp, he didn’t glance at me as usual.
That summer Charlie mved away.
