The best bikes for the beginners
When it comes to purchasing your first bike, the choice is endless, making it tough to know what to go for. Here are the best buys on the market right now.
    Boardman Cx Comp
This is a cross-country bike, and it’s so multifunctional that you can handle any terrain (地势) on it, making it a great choice for those wanting to try various cycling subjects. If you leave on the thick tires it comes with, it can ride on various paths and can even handle some less demanding mountain bike routes. Alternatively, put on thin, smooth tires and treat it as a road bike. It has a basket and comes with Shimano Sora gears (变速器), which are outstanding for its price.
    £650, Halfords
    Planet X RT-58 V2
Planet X is based in Yorkshire, which means you’d probably have to buy this bike without seeing it. But it’s worth it, because this is an excellent machine at a lower price. Planet X is a highly rated manufacturer and this model comes with Shimano Sora gearing.
    £585, Planet X
    Specialized Allez E5
Specialized is one of the biggest and most popular brands in cycling, and this is its hugely popular primary road bike. It comes with solid components from front to back and you’ll look great out on the road.
    £ 750, Evans Cycles
    Boardman Road Team Carbon
If you can push your budget further still, this bike is worth the extra investment. The frame is made entirely from carbon, which is lighter, faster and more comfortable than the composition metal models above and gives you an all round and more pleasant ride. It also means that if you get really serious about cycling, you don’t have to upgrade as quickly as you would with a cheaper bike.
    £800, Halfords
    21. What is special about Boardman Cx Comp?
    A. Its Shimano Sora gears. B. Its reasonable price.
    C. Its various functions. D. Its firm tires.
    22. Which one has the lowest price with Shimano Sora gears?
    A. Planet X RT-58 V2. B. Specialized Allez E5.
    C. Boardman Cx Comp. D. Boardman Road Team Carbon.
    23. What can we learn about the bikes mentioned in the text?

    B. Boardman Cx Comp is actually a mountain bike.
    C. Specialized Allez E5 is designed for senior cyclists.
    D. Boardman Road Team Carbon is made from special materials.

We all agree, surely—memorizing poetry is a good thing, and children ought to do it. But people do object. At least, they object to the idea that children should be forced to learn poetry. They tend to be people like Michael Rosen. Rosen has more practical objections to children having to learn poetry by the government’s order. Actually, Rosen is all for learning poetry, “when it feels right”, he says, “is at the heart of good teaching”.
He’s onto something about the timing, but that doesn’t mean policymakers are wrong to insist on pupils learning poetry. The problem is that some influential educationists have come to see learning by heart as a waste of time when tomorrow’s adults will want skills more than information.
Let’s come to the most important objectors—children. Their objection tends to come in the least offensive form. It comes in the question: “Why are we doing this?” It’s a worthwhile inquiry. I teach at Sherborne School, where boys do learn poetry, and luckily there’s time in our lessons to answer that question.
Here’s one of the answers I give. There’ll be one time when your good friend is going to introduce you to someone with whom he wants to spend the rest of his life. There’ll be a ceremony to honour this union, and words will be very important. You’re likely to be the one who has to stand up and say, “Let me not to the marriage of true minds/Admit impediments...” And when you do that, you’re going to be speaking for everyone in the room. Now, everybody breathes a sigh of relief.
Learning poetry and reciting poetry forces us to think of it in this public way. However mysterious and intimate poetry seems, we need to remember it’s something we also share, and offer each other. So take some, and pass it on.
    24. Which of the following would be favored by some influential educationists?
    A. To guide children how to recite poetry.
    B. To instruct children how to get information.
    C. To teach students real life skills for the future.
    D. To force children to obey the government policy.
    25. As for the children’s question, the teacher should .
    A. consider it offensive B. take it seriously
    C. dismiss it as worthless D. discuss it after class
    26. What’s the writer’s attitude towards poetry learning?
    A. Objective. B. Supportive. C. Critical. D. Disapproving.
    27. What could be the best title for the passage?
    A. Memorizing poetry is a good thing. B. Different views on memorizing poetry.
    C. Never too late to learn poetry. D. Objections to forcing kids to learn poetry.
    C
The morning after an evening struggle to care for my three-year-old daughter, I couldn’t wait to get her to school. I, as a mother, was tired of the anger and her inability to communicate because of her slow language development.
As I accompanied her into the car, I felt desperate. Nothing was right with our world. She’d been born around the same time when the nation was witnessing the birth of another Great Recession(大萧条). My job and my house had been victims. Then this happened. My child’s language delay was identified, but doctors struggled to properly help her. I felt like we both needed to be rescued.
I returned that afternoon as disenchanted with the little girl I loved as when I left. Walking slowly toward the school’s playground gate, I found her preschool teacher racing to greet me.
“You should have seen her today!” His breathy words were supported by excitement. I didn’t interrupt. “See that climber,” He pointed to a wooden piece of playground equipment that looked like a rock wall. I nodded. “Well, every day since she started school, she’s tried and failed to make it to the top.” He took a breath. “And today she did it!”
He expressed his joy just as if he’d witnessed her conquering Mount Everest! “She cheered and celebrated! I wish I’d recorded it!” His words comforted me. My daughter had conquered her mountain.
As she ran toward me, I recognized something I hadn’t before. I saw her perseverance (毅力). I saw her strength. I saw a hero.

We humans love to stare into our smart devices. We gaze for hours—about 10 hours and 39 minutes a day—at our smartphones, tablets and televisions. Is this staring bad for us? It might be, mainly because as we stare at our devices we are exposing ourselves to blue light.
Blue light is a type of electromagnetic (电磁的) radiation with a very short wavelength that produces a high amount of energy. While it’s true that light can damage our eyes under certain circumstances, there’s no scientific evidence suggesting that blue light is harmful to our eyes. But many people still think it is, which is why blue-light-blocking glasses are so popular. So do the glasses work?
“Everyone is very concerned that blue light may be causing damage to the eyes, but there’s no evidence that it may be causing serious damage,” Dr. Rahul Khurana, clinical spokesman for the American Academy of Ophthalmology, told Business Insider.
Blue light exposure is nothing new. In fact, the sun is the largest source of blue light. Moreover, blue light is also present in LED light. But if blue light isn’t harmful, then why are we constantly rubbing our eyes when we’re looking at our screens? The answer is eye strain (眼疲劳). More than 60 percent of people experience eye problems associated with digital eye strain. And blue light, it seems, isn’t the cause. Instead, our eyes are so strained because most of us blink less when we stare at our digital devices. So if eye strain is the issue, blue-light-blocking glasses are probably of little use.
    32. What do we know about blue light?
    A. It is a kind of nuclear radiation. B. It has the shortest wavelength.
    C. It may come from electronic devices. D. It consumes a great deal of energy.
    33. What causes the popularity of blue-light-blocking glasses?
    A. Evidence of their benefits to eyes.
    B. Belief in blue light’s harmful effect.
    C. Widespread use of smart devices.
    D. Scientific understanding of blue light.
    34. What can be inferred from Paragraph 4?
    A. Blue light exposure is hardly avoidable.
    B. Eye problems are not easy to deal with.
    C. Blue light may connect with tired eyes.
    D. Rubbing eyes makes people strained.
    35. According to the text, wearing blue-light-blocking glasses may be .
    A. tiring B. harmful C. useless D. beneficial

Take care of your spine (脊柱)
The spine stands at the center of your health, supplying your body with structure and support. It also contains your spinal cord, a massive collection of nerves conveying electric signals from the rest of your body to your brain. 36 .
Maintaining good posture (姿势) is one of the most important things you can do to keep your spine healthy. Proper posture means standing or sitting while keeping your spine straight, except for its natural curves. Posture comes into play even when you are asleep. Sleeping on your side puts less stress on your spine than most other positions. 37 . Especially if you work at a desk most of the day, it’s important to get up and stretch regularly.
38 . Stretch can help the muscles around your spine relax and allow bones to shift into better arrangements. Strength exercises like push-ups (俯卧撑) can also help by strengthening the muscles around your spine. However, don’t overdo the exercise, as repeated motions can strain the muscles around your spine.
Finally, your diet affects the health of your spine because many vitamins are necessary for bones and nerves. In particular, vitamin B and D are essential to keep bones healthy, so you may want to consider taking a supplement. 39 , so it is also helpful to do some of the back exercise outside.
Many of the actions necessary to keep your spine healthy are identical to those used to preserve your health in other ways. 40 .
    A. However, the latter is also absorbed from sunlight
    B. Staying still for too long can be hard on your back
    C. So protect your back, and the rest of the body will benefit
    D. Protecting your spine with yoga is also a necessary step
    E. Try the following exercises to keep your spine more flexible
    F. Exercise is also an important factor in the health of your spine
    G. So you should take the following factors into account to have a healthy spine

Through our lives, we can gain a lot and lose as much. But being honest should always be with us, as honesty is always regarded as a virtue. Every time I talk about the topic, something crowds in my mind as if it had just happened.
I was 16 when one morning, Dad told me I could drive him to Mijas and then take the car in a nearby garage to get it serviced. At that time, I had just passed the driving test, and I hardly had a chance to use the car, so I said yes without hesitation.
I drove my father to Mijas, promising to pick him up again at 4 pm, then I went to a nearby garage, and put the car in there. Since I had several hours to spare, I decided to go to a movie theater near the garage to see the movie. However, I was so absorbed in the plot of the movie that I forgot the time. When the last movie finished, I looked at my watch—6 pm. I was two hours late!
I thought my father would be very angry if he knew what I was doing. And he would never let me drive again. So I decided to make up an excuse. Then, I drove to the appointed place, my father was sitting in a corner, waiting patiently. I first apologized for being late, then told him that I wanted to get there as soon as possible, but that something was wrong with some of the main parts of the car.
I would never forget the way he looked at me. “I’m very disappointed that you thought you had to lie to me, Jason.” My father looked at me again and said, “When you didn’t show up on time, I called the gas station and asked if there was anything wrong. They told me you never picked up the car. So, you see, I know there’s nothing wrong with the car at all.”
    Paragraph 1
A wave of guilt swept over me and I had to admit the fact that I had gone to the movies and that was the real reason why I was late.
    ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
    Paragraph 2
“But father, it’s exactly eighteen miles home from here, and it’s dark. You can’t walk back.” I begged.

Confucius Institute provides various interesting subjects. You will learn Chinese history and traditional culture as well as Chinese writing. Also, you have more chances to talk with classmates in Chinese. Besides, teachers will introduce some Chinese traditional festivals, such as the Spring Festival and Mid-autumn Festival. Some related activities will be held during different festivals, such as making dumplings or eating zongzi, you can not only enjoy delicious meals, but also have a good knowledge of Chinese life.
I hope you will find my recommendation helpful and attractive.
    Yours,

    第二节
    Paragraph 1
A wave of guilt swept over me and I had to admit the fact that I had gone to the movies and that was the real reason why I was late. Dad listened carefully as a sadness passed through him, “I’m angry, not with you but with myself. I realize that I am a failure as a father because after all these years you feel that you have to lie to me. I have failed because I have brought up a son who cannot even tell the truth to his own father. I’m going to walk home now and think where I have gone wrong all these years.”
    Paragraph 2
“But father, it’s exactly eighteen miles home from here, and it’s dark. You can’t walk back.” I begged. My apologies and the rest of my words were useless. I let my father down and I was about to learn one of the most painful lessons of my life. Dad began walking along the dusty roads. I quickly jumped in the car and followed behind. I apologized all the way, telling him how sorry I was, but he simply ignored me. For 18 miles he kept walking. Seeing my father in so much pain was the most awful experience that I have ever faced. However it was also the most successful lesson.

W: Do you get up at 7:00 every morning? M: Yes, and I need 9 hours of sleep.
    Text 4
M: Do you know Mr. Green works in a hospital?
W: Yes. I heard that the hospital is near the railway station.

    Text 6
M: What do you do, Rose?
    W: I’m a lawyer.
M: Do you like your job?
W: Yes, I do. The work is very interesting. I get on well with my colleagues.
M: Are there any bad things?
W: Well, I work for very long hours…Ten hours a day is quite normal. And if something important comes up, I’m often in the office until eight or nine in the evening. Or I take work home. The other bad thing is that I don’t have many holidays, only twenty days a year. Actually, I’d prefer less money and more holidays.
    Text 7
    M: You look upset, Monica.
    W: It was our boss.
M: Then you were late again?
W: Yeah. You know, my husband was away on business. My child had a fever last night. I had little sleep all night. I must have turned off the alarm clock and gone back to sleep again.
M: Did our boss accept your excuse?
W: Well, he was mad at me. But I promised it wouldn’t happen again.
    Text 8
W: Excuse me, sir. I’m a stranger here and have lost my way.
M: Where would you like to go?
W: I want to return to my hotel, the New York Hotel.
M: Oh, it’s quite near here. You just turn left and walk three blocks and you’ll find your place.
W: Thank you very much, sir. By the way, could you direct me to Central Park?
M: You can take the subway near your hotel and get off at the 59th Street.
    W: Can I walk there?
M: No. It’s too far for you to walk. It might take you three quarters of an hour.
W: I’ve got it, thank you.
    M: You are welcome.
    Text 9
W: Mr. Black, I need to take a few days off because my parents are coming over to visit.
M: But it’s not really a good idea to take time off right now, you know.
W: I know, but they’ve never been to the UK before and they can’t speak English.
M: Um, you know there are thousands of tourists in London who can’t speak English and they manage to get around.
W: Yes, I know. But they really expect me to be there. It’s cultural differences. Chinese parents expect their children to do things like this.
M: I know. But actually, if they care about your education, they’ll understand.
W: Well, but do you think I could take maybe just two days off?
M: OK, two days. But you must catch up with all of the work and get all of the materials.
    Text 10
Good morning, everybody. My topic for today is “How to prepare for a job interview”. If you are looking for a new job, here are some job interview tips you should keep in mind. First, be sure to dress properly for the position. However, you don’t want to overdress for the interview either. Second, be sure to do some research on the company for which you are interviewing. This will help you know if you have the needed skills or experience to work for that company. Finding out something about the company will also help you ask clever questions about their business to show them that you are interested in their company. Finally, be prepared to tell them why you would be their best choice for the position. You don’t have to boast about your abilities and skills, but you can tell them in a confident and direct way why you can help their company better than other applicants.
