Four Free Mobile Apps to Help You Learn English Faster
Have you realized that you can put your smart phone to really good use for learning English? Here are four free mobile apps that will help you do just that.
Hello English
It covers all the aspects of language learning, including vocabulary, translation, grammar, spellings, spoken and reading skills. It uses interactive games to teach different English lessons and offers new audio books, latest news, and books. However, you should already understand basic English structures and alphabets, for the app can’t help you learn English from scratch.
Duolingo
If you want to learn English from scratch, then this is the app you are looking for. Duolingo uses interactive games to help you learn English. For beginners, the app focuses on helping you learn verbs, phrases and sentences.
Lingbe
If you are ready to practice your spoken skills in the realworld, you’ll need Lingbe. It’s a communitybased app where people help each other and share their native languages. It connects you with real people on call who are native English speakers.
Hello Talk
HelloTalk is similar to Lingbe as it connects you with native speakers to help improve your language skills. However, it adds a few extra functions that might interest you. You can view the information about users to find a match that interests you. Additionally, you can also send text and audio messages, and even do video calls with other people.
If you are a beginner, start from Duolingo and then use Hello English to take full command over the language. For fluent spoken English learners, you can try out Lingbe or Hello Talk.

One stride (大步) at a time, Tom Panek and his guide dog, Gus, inch closer to their goal. The two have been training in local parks for more than three years in the hope of competing in an official longdistance race. It’s never been done before.
“I’ve been running my whole life. I ran on my crosscountry team in high school, and I ran as a young adult,” Panek said. He lost his sight 25 years ago. “When I lost my sight I was too scared to run,” Panek said.
As he adjusted to his blindness, he began running with a human guide, but it wasn’t the same. “Although many people run with running clubs, at the end of the day you’re running your own race. And when you’re tied to another person, it’s no longer your own race. The independence isn’t quite there,” Panek said.
Two years ago, Panek became the CEO of Guiding Eyes for the Blind. The idea of a running guide program was first suggested by Richard Hunter, who was blind and looking to get back to run.
“Richard shouted out, ‘I’m really curious, have you ever trained a guide dog to run?’ And I said, ‘I don’t know. It hasn’t been done,’” Panek said.
A few months and intense (紧张的) training sessions later, the running guide program was born. Panek and a small team helped train Klinger, a German shepherd, to aid Hunter with running.
He formed a team of experts to train a small group of dogs to run long distances. The dogs begin their training at 18 months old. It’s an exclusive club. Out of 165 graduate dogs, only about 12 are considered race ready.
The team’s final test would be a fivemile race through New York’s Central Park just one week before the New York City Marathon. It was Panek’s and Gus’s first competitive race. Before the race, Panek was overcome with emotion, wiping away his tears of appreciation to the dog who gave him his independence back.
“And crossing that finish line, you know it was an important occasion for me,” Panek said.
24. How did Panek think of running with a human guide?
A. Inspiring. B. Challenging. C. Rewarding. D. Disappointing.
25. What was Hunter curious about?
A. Training a dog guide to run. B. Running with a human guide.
C. Starting a running guide program. D. Getting back to run as a blind man.
26. Which of the following is mentioned in this passage?
A. Dogs are unwilling to run long distances.
B. Few dogs are qualified to guide in running.
C. Some dogs are born to be a guide in races.
D. Dogs need to be trained for 18 months.
27. What significance (意义) did the final test have to Panek?
A. He proved his ability finally.
B. He won a big prize with Gus’ help.
C. He got his independence once again.
D. He ran to the finishing line without stopping.
C
Belly fat has long been thought to be particularly bad for your heart, but now, a new study adds more evidence to the idea that it may also be bad for your brain.
The study, from the United Kingdom, found that people who were obese (肥胖的) and had a high waist-to-hip ratio (腰臀比) had slightly lower brain volumes (容量) on average, compared with people who maintained a healthy weight. Specifically, belly fat was linked with lower volumes of gray matter, the brain tissue that contains nerve cell.
“Our research looked at a large group of people and found obesity, specifically around the middle, may be linked with brain diminution,” lead study author Mark Hamer, a professor at Loughborough University’s School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences in Leicestershire, England, said in a statement. Lower brain volume, or brain diminution, has been linked with an increased risk of memory decline.
The new findings, published in the journal Neurology, suggest that the combination of obesity (as measured by body mass index, or BMI) and a high waist-to-hip ratio may be a risk factor (因素) for brain diminution, the researchers said. However, the study found only an association between belly fat and lower brain volume, and cannot prove that carrying more fat around the waist actually causes brain diminution. It could be that people with lower volumes of gray matter in certain brain areas are at a higher risk of obesity. Future studies are needed to find out the reasons for the link.
A limitation of the study is that people who agreed to take part in the study tended to be healthier than people who did not want to take part, so the results may not apply to the general population as a whole, the researchers noted.
28. What does the waist-to-hip ratio refer to in the text?
A. A measure of belly fat. B. A calculation of body weight.
C. A brain tissue with nerve cells. D. An evaluation of brain volume.
29. What does the underlined word “diminution” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Risk. B. Decrease. C. Development. D. Recovery.
30. What does the text mainly want to tell us?
A. Belly fat may be harmful to the heart. B. Belly fat contributes to bitter memories.
C. Belly fat results from lower nerve cells. D. Belly fat is related to lower brain volume.
31. What can we infer from the research?
A. Belly fat is the cause of brain diminution.
B. Good general health is important for good brain health.
C. Unhealthy people are active in taking part in the study.
D. Gray matter may influence the brain tissue that contains nerve cells.
D
If you think that running marathons will help you live a long and healthy life, new research may come as a shock. According to a recent scientific study, people who do a very strenuous workout are as likely to die as people who do no exercise at all.
Scientists in Denmark have been studying over 1,000 joggers (慢跑者) and non - joggers for 12 years. The death rates from the sample group indicate that people who jog at a proper pace two or three times a week for less than two and a half hours in total are least likely to die. The best speed to jog at was found to be about 5 miles per hour. The research suggests that people who jog more than three times a week or at higher speeds of over 7 mph die at the same rate as non - joggers. The scientists think that this is because strenuous exercise causes structural changes to the heart and arteries(动脉). Over time, this can cause serious effects.
Peter Schnohr, a researcher in Copenhagen, said, “If your goal is to decrease risk of death and improve life expectancy(寿命), jogging a few times a week at a proper pace is a good strategy. Anything more is not just unnecessary, and it may be harmful.”
The implications (暗示) of this are that moderate forms of exercise such as tai chi, yoga and walking may be better for us than “iron man events, triathlons and long - distance running and cycling. According to Jacob Louis Marott, another researcher involved in the study, “You don't actually have to do that much to have a good impact on your health. And perhaps you shouldn’t actually do too much”.
32.Which of the following words can replace “strenuous” in Paragraph 1?
A. regular B. hard C. practical D. limited
33.Why does the author presents the figures (数字) in Paragraph 2 ?
A. To suggest giving up jogging B.To show risks of doing sports
C. To provide supportive evidence D. To introduce the research content
34.According to the scientists, why is too much exercise harmful?
A. It may injure the heart and arteries. B.It can make the body tired out.
C. It will bring much pressure. D. It consumes too much energy.
35.What can be the best title of the text?
A. No exercise at all is the best choice. B.More exercise means a healthier life.
C. Marathons runners are least likely to die. D. Too strenuous exercise is no better than none

For many years, I had a recurring (重复出现的) dream. I was a little girl again, rushing about, trying to get ready for school.
“Hurry, you’ll be late for school,” my mother called to me.
“I am hurrying, Mom! What did I do with my books?”
Deep inside I knew where the dream came from. It was about some unfinished business in my life. As a kid, I loved everything about school. I loved books, teachers, tests and homework. Most of all I longed to someday march down the aisle (通道) to receive my diploma. That seemed more appealing even than getting married.
But at 15, I had to drop out because my parents couldn’t afford tuition (学费). My hope of getting a diploma was dead, or so I thought. Pretty soon, I married and had three children, and I thought: “There goes my diploma.”
Even so, I wanted my children to be educated. But Linda, our youngest child, had juvenile arthritis (幼年型关节炎) in her hands and knees, which made it impossible for her to function in a normal classroom. I felt really sorry for her and I didn’t want her to live her life with regret. I didn’t give up hope of her being back to school in some way.
One day, I saw an ad in the newspaper for evening courses. “That’s the answer,” I said to myself. Linda always feels better in the evening, so I’ll just sign her up for night school.
Linda was busy filling out enrollment (入学) forms when the secretary said: “Mrs. Schantz, why don’t you come back to school?”
I laughed: “There’s no way! I’m 55!” But he persisted, and before I knew what I had done, I was enrolled for classes in English and crafts. “This is only an experiment,” I warned him, but he just smiled. So, I told myself to try for just a semester and to see if it would work. Anyway, my dream was still there in my heart.
Paragraph 1:
It was exciting to go to school again but it was no game. Sitting in a classroom full of kids was awkward, even if most of them were respectful and encouraging. During the day, I was still a busy married woman having loads of housework to do. In the evening, I was a hardworking student working on my courses. To my surprise, both Linda and I did very well in night school. I went back again the next semester, and my grades steadily improved.
Paragraph 2:
Linda and I encourage each other through all these years. ____________________________
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
注意:
- 续写词数应为80左右;

根据第四段第一句“If you are ready to practice your spoken skills in the realworld, you’ll need Lingbe.”

If you think that running marathons will help you live a long and healthy life, new research may come as a shock可知,人们一般认为马拉松会帮助我们过上健康长寿的生活,但新的研究结果不是这样。 再根据第二段because strenuous exercise causes structural changes to the heart and arteries可推测,strenuous exercise是指剧烈运动。
The research suggests that people who jog more than three times a week or at higher speeds of over 7 mph die at the same rate as non- joggers(研究表明每周慢跑超过三次或时速超过7英里的人死亡率与非慢跑者相同),呈现研究数据提供证据,证明文章第一段提出的观点:做非常剧烈运动的人和根本不做运动的人死亡可能性一样。故选C项。
The scientists think that this is because strenuous exercise causes structural changes to the heart and arteries(动脉). Over time, this can cause serious injuries(科学家们认为这是因为剧烈运动会导致心脏和动脉的结构改变。 故选A项。

Dear editor,
My name is Li Hua. My topic today deals with the problem of nearsightedness in students.
At present, an increasing number of students wear glasses and some even in high degree, which worries themselves a lot. In my opinion, there are mainly three reasons. First, their ways of using eyes are not healthy. Second, because of the high pressure of study, they often study for too long without any break. Third, some spend too much time before televisions or computers.
However, much can be done to protect our eyesight. When reading, make sure we are in bright places and let our eyes rest every hour. Whenever we are free, we can do some eye exercises so that our tired eyes can be restored quickly.
Yours,
Li Hua

Paragraph 2:
Linda and I encourage each other through all these years. When I was down, Linda encouraged me. “Mom, you can’t quit now!” And when she was down, I encouraged her. I have to say it was a time which was really hard on both of us. But neither of us gave up. At last, I got my diploma. To my surprise, almost all of my classmates voted for me to be class speaker, and I got a $3,000 college scholarship. The unfinished business in my dreams was eventually finished.

Text 10
A new 2,400-square-meter museum is set to open on New York State’s Liberty Island next year. The museum celebrates the world-famous Statue of Liberty. The statue was a gift from the people of France to the United States. It officially opened to the public in October 1886. From 1892 to 1954, more than 12 million immigrants passed by the Statue of Liberty as their ships sailed to nearby Ellis Island. Many immigrants later traveled to Liberty Island and saw the statue up close. Now, a new museum to honor “Lady Liberty” is on the way.
About 4.5 million tourists visit Liberty Island every year. But only about 20 percent are able to go inside the Statue of Liberty because of limited space. The new museum will permit every visitor to know what the inside is like. The museum is expected to open in May 2019. Entering the building, visitors will experience a virtual look inside the head of Lady Liberty. They also have a chance to see a recreation of the work place of Frederic Auguste Bartholdi, who created the statue. Museum visitors also will see the 1,600-kilogram torch that lit up New York Harhor for nearly 100 years. On top of the Statue of Liberty Museum, visitors can have a good look at New York’s Lower Manhattan area.
