A leading scientist says researchers in Florida are close to developing a way to control the algae(藻类) known to cause deadly “red tide.” Michael Crosby heads the Mote Marine Laboratory in Sarasota, Florida, a leading research organization.
A 10-month-old red tide has been killing ocean life along Florida’s southwestern coast.Huge numbers of dead fish have washed up on beaches from the city of Naples up to Tampa.Red tide can cause problems for humans too. Contact with the algae can cause breathing difficulties, burning eyes and skin pain.
On Monday, Governor Rick Scott ordered emergency measures to deal with the crisis. Crosby said he welcomed the move, which releases more money and resources to solve the problem. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission suspects the red tide caused the deaths of hundreds of sea turtles this year. The agency also blames it for at least some of the 68 deaths of manatees(海牛).
Crosby said, scientists are currently testing a process that would pump red-algae-filled seawater through an ozone-treatment system. Then the purified water would be pumped back into the ocean or waterway.Crosby said the experiments were carried out in huge 25,000-gallon tanks. He said all succeeded in removing the poisonous algae.Crosby said the water chemistry returned to normal within 24 hours.Scientists are studying the use of seaweed and other organisms(生物) to fight the red tide.
Red tides happen almost yearly in Florida. They start in the Gulf of Mexico, where microscopic algae cells called Karenia brevis feed on deep-sea nutrients.Ocean currents carry the algae close to the coast, usually in autumn. Crosby said strong northerly winds that normally end red tides failed to form last winter. And he said scientists are not sure if the winds will fail to form again.
21. What doesn’t the author mention in the passage?
A. The terrible consequences caused by the red tide
B. The reason that leads to the outbreak of the red tide
C. The method used to remove the algae
D. The progress made to improve the ozone-treatment system.
22. To purify the red-algae-filled seawater, which isn’t true according to the passage?
A. The purified water should be pumped into the huge 25000-gallon tanks.
B. The use of seaweed and other organisms have been tested to control the red tide.
C. The ozone-treatment system is environmentally friendly.
D. The chemistry in the purifying process will return to the normal level finally.
23. What’s the attitude of Crosby in the last paragraph?
A.Tolerant B. Unacceptable C. Concerned D. Optimistic

Basketball is big in China: kids playing street hoops, fans wearing the jerseys(运动衫) of their favorite stars and huge audiences for streamed and televised games. It’s just that much of the fans’ cheering and spending goes to the U.S. National Basketball Association rather than China’s homegrown professional league. Basketball star Yao Ming is out to change that.
Since becoming head of the Chinese Basketball Association in early 2017, Mr. Yao has worked to transform the league into something closer to what he saw in the U.S. He’s aiming to raise the level of talent, and also working to make the game more profitable for owners so they can put more money into the sport.
China’s rising middle class has many experts optimistic about the prospects for professional athletics. Government ministries previously were in charge of sports leagues, which have historically focused their attention on fielding Olympic champions—not nurturing professional franchises(特权) to make profits. “We’re at an inflection point for sports consumption in China, where sports is becoming a consumer product,” said Matt Beyer, an American who works as an agent for CBA players. “Consumers are moving from viewing sports as exercise to admiring athletes and appreciating sports culture,” he said.
The sorry state of Chinese basketball contributed to Mr. Yao’s appointment, according to people familiar with the situation. He was the first person chosen to run a sports league who didn’t come from the government— a decision subsequently(之后) repeated in golf, ice hockey and equestrian sports(马术) leagues.
Mr. Yao also believes changes are needed to improve the talent pool. In China, athletes for national teams are selected at a young age for state-sponsored training, cutting out the potential for late-bloomers. Mr. Yao came to believe that the U.S. system, where athletes can enter sports at the high school and even college levels, was another way to develop talent.
24. What can we learn from the passage?
A.Fans in China prefer to cheer for the homegrown professional league.
B.Consumers are nowadays merely viewing sports as exercise.
C.The appointment of Mr. Yao who didn’t come from the government was modeled after.
D.The selection of athletes for national teams won’t change for a long time.
25. What does the underlined word “late-bloomers” mean in the passage?
A.People who become excellent players not at a young age
B.People who are eager to succeed
C.People who attend the teams later
D.People who are late to do sports
26. What’s the purpose of writing the passage?
A.To introduce the different opinions about the development of basketball in China
B.To attract people’s attention on the profits made from sports
C.To inform us of the measures taken to change the current Chinese basketball
D.To clarify the consumption trend in sports

Whose turn is it to do the washing up? It causes arguments in households all over the world. Scientists now believe the daily chore could be good for your health and wellbeing.
A study has found that people, who do the dishes mindfully, focusing on their actions carefully, feel less stressed and nervous. Scientists at Florida State University set out to discover if washing up could be used as an informal contemplative(沉思的) practice to promote mindfulness and improve emotional well being.
Mindfulness is described as being a state of active, open attention of the present time, according to Psychology Today. When a person achieves mindfulness they observe their thoughts and feelings from a distance without judging them as good or bad.
Instead of letting your life pass you by, the practice encourages a person to live in the moment and relish(品味) their daily experiences. To analyze the impact of washing the dishes, researchers at Florida State University recruited 51 students to engage in mindful dishwashing. Just over half read a 230-word passage that highlighted the importance of the sensory experience of dishwashing, Fox News reported. The remaining participants acted as controls, and read a similar-length passage about proper dishwashing techniques.
They were then asked to complete measures of mindfulness, effect and experiential recall. Those who performed mindful dishwashing were found to have achieved greater state mindfulness, increases in elements of positive effect, eg inspiration, decreases in nervousness and over-estimations of dishwashing time. Feelings of nervousness decreased by 27 per cent in those who mindfully washed their dishes, while inspiration increased by 25 per cent in the same group.
Meanwhile there was no change among those in the control group. The researchers said their findings could have implications for other daily activities. They suggested that mindfulness as well as positive effect could be developed through intentionally engaging in a broad range of activities.
27. What’s the main idea of the passage?
A.People who do more daily chore become more mindful.
B.People who do daily chore mindfully will improve emotion.
C.When people achieve mindfulness, they are more likely to judge good from bad.
D.It is suggested that people should live in the moment and enjoy their daily experience.
28. Which of the following sentence is true according to the passage?
A. Washing up is a formal practice to improve mindfulness.
B. If a person is in a state of mindfulness, he’ll make judgment of his thoughts.
C. Mindfulness can help people to live in the present time.
D. Mindfulness will increase the negative feelings and decrease the positive feelings.
29. From the research, we can conclude that__________________.
A. Feelings of nervousness decreased by 27 percent in the control group.
B.The findings couldn’t be applied to other daily activities.
C.Students reading the sensory experience of dishwashing will achieve mindfulness.
D.Only the positive feelings can be changed by the experiment.
30. What does the author imply in the end?
A.We should do more daily chores to make our mind full.
B.Being a state of active can only be achieved by doing daily mindfully.
C.When doing other daily activities mindfully, one can still achieve positive feelings.
D.Feelings of nervousness and inspiration can be decreased by doing daily activities mindfully.

Students who have used electronic cigarettes by the time they start ninth grade are more likely than others to start smoking traditional cigarettes and other combustible (易燃的)tobacco products within the next year, according to a new study funded by the National Institutes of Health. E-cigarettes deliver nicotine to the lungs by heating a liquid solution that contains nicotine and other chemicals to produce an aerosol(气溶胶) that the user takes in, a process often called “vaping.”
The study compared tobacco use initiation among 222 students who had used e-cigarettes, but not combustible tobacco products, and 2,308 who had neither used e-cigarettes or combustible tobacco products when initially surveyed at the start of ninth grade. During the first six months after being surveyed, 30.7 percent of those who had used e-cigarettes started using combustible tobacco products, such as cigarettes, and cigars, compared to only 8.1 percent of those who had never used e-cigarettes. Data were collected as part of a longitudinal survey(纵向研究) of substance use and mental health among high school students in Los Angeles. The study surveyed students from 10 public high schools selected because of their diverse demographic characteristics(人口学特征).
“While teen tobacco use has fallen in recent years, this study confirms that we should continue to closely watch teen smoking patterns,” said NIDA Director Nora D. Volkow, M.D. “Parents and teens should recognize that although e-cigarettes might not have the same carcinogenic(致癌的) effects of regular cigarettes, they do carry a risk of addiction.” Adam M. Leventhal, Ph.D., the first author on the study said, “While we cannot conclude that e-cigarette use directly leads to smoking, this research raises concerns that recent increases in youth e-cigarette use could ultimately lead to the spread of smoking-related illness."
Recreational e-cigarette use is becoming increasingly popular among teens who have never smoked tobacco. Adolescents who enjoy the experience of taking in nicotine via e-cigarettes could be more likely to experiment with other nicotine products, including tobacco. Alarmingly, e-cigarettes deserve our close attention.

Huge numbers of dead fish; cause breathing difficulties, burning eyes and skin pain;以及第三段中的deaths and stranding of hundreds of sea turtles; the 68 deaths of manatees可知A选项的内容即“赤潮造成的危害”是有涉及的;文章最后一段有提到 strong northerly winds that normally end tides failed to form last winter,可知B选项的“赤潮爆发的原因”也是涉及的;文章第四段指出科学家正试图采取一种Ozone-treatment System以及用一些其他的有机物来去除海水中的藻类,故C项也是有涉及的。
【重点词汇】:leading主导的 ;be close to接近于; contact with与……接触;
A leading scientist says researchers in Florida are close to developing a way to control the algae(藻类) known to cause deadly “red tide.”(过去分词作后置定语)
They start in the Gulf of Mexico, where microscopic algae cells called Karenia brevis feed on deep-sea nutrients.(where作关系副词,引导定语从句)
And he said scientists are not sure if the winds will fail to form again.(if引导宾语从句)
文章第四段中a decision subsequently repeated in golf, ice hockey and equestrian sports leagues可知姚明的任命被其他体育项目的管理人员任命所效仿。【干扰项分析】文章第一段中表明当前粉丝对NBA的喜爱程度选超CBA,故A不正确;文章第三段最后表明consumers are moving from viewing sports as exercise to admiring athletes and appreciating sports culture,因此B项不正确;文章最后一段指出目前我国对国家运动员的选拔已经做出改变,对于那些late-bloomers,即大器晚成的优秀运动员也开始关注,故D项不正确。
【重点词汇】transform into转变;aim to do为了;optimistic乐观的;inflection反思;contribute to导致

B项,根据文章第三段描述“When a person achieves mindfulness they observe their thoughts and feelings from a distance without judging them as good or bad.” D项,根据第五段 “Those who performed mindful dishwashing were found to have achieved greater state mindfulness, increases in elements of positive effect, eg inspiration, decreases in nervousness and over-estimations of dishwashing time.”
B项文章最后一段表明mindfulness as well as positive effect could be cultivated through intentionally engaging in a broad range of activities,故B项错误。
C项文章最后一段表明mindfulness as well as positive effect could be cultivated through intentionally engaging in a broad range of activities,故正确。
【重点词汇】promote 推动;emotional情感的;participants参与者;inspiration启发,灵感;intentionally 有目的地; a broad range of大范围的
To analyze the impact of washing the dishes, researchers at Florida State University recruited 51 students to engage in mindful dishwashing.(不定式作目的状语)
