21.(6分)Abut 15 years ag, I taught A Prblem frm Hell, a bk n gencides (大屠杀), t a grup f 18- and 19-year-lds in a mid-west university in the US. In my class there was a yung man wh had spent his byhd in Bsnia as NATO bmbed his hmetwn. My ther students, amazed by his cnnectin t the gencide in the textbk, asked him what it was like t grw up in a war-zne. “A pretty nrmal childhd as yu had here,” he said. “We played cards inside a lt, and when there was n bmbing we kicked a ball in the street.”
In the past few years, the wrld has seen a rapid increase in refugees (难民), with the number hitting 60 millin. Viet Thanh Nguyen’s stry cllectin The Refugees reminds us that literature is news that stays news. Set in the Vietnamese cmmunities in Califrnia as well as in Vietnam, the stries d nt aim t surprise us with new twists r shck us with wnderful details, as war and refugee stries culd easily chse t d. Rather, like the yung man frm Bsnia, Nguyen’s characters tell these stries because they are the nly nes knwn t them.
Included in the cllectin are tw f the mst tuching pieces, bth abut siblings (兄弟或姊妹) separated by gegraphy and histry. In “Black-Eyed Wmen”, the narratr (讲述人), a yung Vietnamese wman, is visited by the ghst f her elder brther, wh died yung n the bat when the family tk flight frm the war. The tale f lve and lss, vilence and vilatin, may nt be unfamiliar t the reader, but the determinatin f the brther’s ghst (he has taken decades t swim acrss the Pacific t reach America) and the sister’s abandning herself t a half death make the stry lasting.
As an ech, the clsing stry, “Fatherland”, explres a mre cmplex situatin between tw siblings. The narratr, a yung Vietnamese wman, meets her half-sister, visiting frm the US fr the first time. Adding t the tensin is the fact that her father has named the narratr and her siblings after his first set f children. Tw sisters, ne American and ne Vietnamese, yet named the same by the father – it may sund strange, but isn’t it the fate many refugees have t face: a life left behind, that culd have been theirs; and a life in an adpted cuntry.
The theme f dubleness – chice and inevitability (不可避免性), hme and hmelessness, starting afresh and being stuck – is present nt nly in the stries f Vietnamese refugees, but als f thse wh have becme refugees frm their wn hmes and lved nes. “Smiling at yur relatives never gt yu very far, but smiling at strangers and acquaintances smetimes did.” S a pilt, wh fught in the Vietnam war and is nw revisiting the cuntry fr the first time, thinks while waving at the lcals frm a tur bus. He’s distant frm his daughter, just as a Mexican American in the cllectin is distant frm his wife, r a yung man frm Hng Kng is distant frm his father.
The cllectin is full f refugees, whether frm external r frm a deeper, mre internal cnflict between even thse wh are clsest t each ther. With anger but nt despair, with recnciliatin (和解) but nt unrealistic hpe, and with genuine humur that is nt used t insult anyne, Nguyen has breathed life int many unfrgettable characters.
      1、The first paragraph is intended t .

23.(8分) It is widely knwn that any English cnversatin begins with The Weather. Such a fixatin with the weather finds expressin in Dr. Jhnsn’s famus cmment that “When tw English meet, their first talk is f weather.” Thugh Jhnsn’s bservatin is as accurate nw as it was ver tw hundred years ag, mst cmmentatrs(评论员) fail t cme up with a cnvincing explanatin fr this English weather-speak.

He argues that” T an utsider, the mst striking thing abut the English weather is that there is nt very much f it.” Simply, the reasn is that the unusual and unpredictable weather is almst unknwn in the British Isles.
Jeremy Paxman, hwever, disagrees with Brysn, arguing that the English weather is by nature attractive. Brysn and Paxman stand fr cmmn miscnceptins abut the weather-speak amng the English. Bth cmmentatrs, smehw, are missing the pint.
