Dad was 29 when he gt his big rles in films. I had an early start at the age f nine with a rle in a 1900s TV series, but it wasn’t until I finished film studies that I pursued my career as an actress. 22.(8分) I thught we all knew why independent schl students d better than thse in the state sectr(公立学校). They have mre mney, mre funding and better resurces and they dn’t have the mre challenging students we get in the state sectr.
That was befre I became a teacher-researcher in a tw-year prject led by my cllege, aiming t find the best way t supprt high-ability students. With funding frm the Lndn Schls Excellence Fund, we teamed up with sme f the cuntry’s tp private schls, like Etn and St Paul’s, as well as a number f state schls, t find ut hw t bring the knwledge-rich learning that characterizes independent schls int the state sectr.
Befre the prject, I hadn’t had much cntact with peple wh had been educated there. But the first thing I fund when I visited was that teachers are the same. In the independent sectr, they have challenges t—just different nes.
After tw years, ur research prject has prduced a huge set f findings.
One f the mst useful findings was the imprtance f independent learning habits utside the classrm. I realized that althugh I was always telling students that they needed t d fur t five hurs f private study a week, they didn’t have a clear idea f what this culd lk like beynd making ntes. S I set them different activities including reading articles, ding activities and cmpleting examinatin questins.
I started t put much mre emphasis n activities utside the classrm, like researching tpics beynd the syllabus(教学大纲) r discussing things in the news. And I praised anyne wh asked questins in class, s we created a culture where students were prud t ask a questin rather than seeing it as a way f flagging up the fact that they hadn’t understd smething.
My research is beginning t have a real influence. My students nw cme t class and tell me what they want t knw abut. But they n lnger expect me t d the research—they want t find ut fr themselves. At the end f the year I gave students a questinnaire n independent learning. One wrte, “Independent learning wuld limit the help I gt frm ther students. It helps yu t think fr yurself.”

24.(8分)Sme huses are designed t be smart. Others have smart designs. An example f the secnd type f huse wn an Award f Excellence frm the American Institute f Architects.
Lcated n the shre f Sullivan’s Island ff the cast f Suth Carlina, the award-winning cube-shaped beach huse was built t replace ne smashed t pieces by Hurricane(飓风)Hug 10 years ag. Befre Hug, many new huses built alng Suth Carlina’s shreline were prly cnstructed, and enfrcement f building rules wasn’t strict, accrding t architect Ray Huff, wh created the cleverly-designed beach huse. Sn after Hug, all new shreline huses are required t meet stricter, better-enfrced rules. The new beach huse n Sullivan’s Island shuld be able t withstand a Level 3 hurricane with peak winds f 179 t 209 kilmeters per hur.
At first sight, the huse n Sullivan’s Island lks anything but hurricane-prf. Its redwd shell makes it resemble “a large party lantern (灯笼)” at night, accrding t ne bserver. But lks can be misleading. The huse’s wden frame is reinfrced with lng steel rds t give it extra strength.
T further prtect the huse frm hurricane damage. Huff raised it 2.7 meters ff the grund n timber pilings-lng, slim wd pieces anchred deep in the sand. Pilings might appear insecure, but they are strng enugh t supprt the weight f the huse. They als raise the huse abve strm waves. The pilings allw the waves t run under the huse instead f running int it. ‘These waves cme ashre at terrible speeds and cause mst f the damage dne t beach-frnt buildings,” said Huff.
Huff designed the timber pilings t be partially hidden by the huse’s grund-t-rf shell. “The shell masks the pilings s that the huse desn’t lk like it’s standing with its pant legs (裤腿) pulled up,” said Huff. In the event f a strm, the shell shuld break apart and let the waves rush under the huse, the architect explained.
1、After the Hurricane Hug, new huses built alng Suth Carlina’s shre line are required .
A.t be easily reinfrced B.t meet stricter building standards
C.t lk smarter in design D.t be designed in the shape f cubes
2、Why is the award-winning beach huse strng and hurricane-prf?
A.It is in the shape f a shell. B.It is made f redwd.
C.It is strengthened by steel rds. D.It is built with timber and cncrete.
3、What’s the purpse f Huff raising the huse 2.7 meters ff the grund n timber pilings?
A.T anchr strnger pilings deep in the sand.
B.T prevent water frm rushing int the huse.
C.T withstand peak winds f abut 200 km/hr.
D.T make the huse lk mre hurricane-prf.
4、Accrding the last paragraph, the main functin f the shell is .
A.t give the huse a better appearance
B.t strengthen the pilings f the huse
C.t prtect the wden frame f the huse
D.t slw dwn the speed f the big waves
25.(10分)One evening, authr Neil’s sn was angry. Neil had said ne f thse things that parents say, like “isn’t it time yu were in bed.” His sn lked up at him, angry and said, “I wish I didn’t have a dad! I wish I had … a gldfish!” That cnversatin gave birth t Neil’s bk, “The Day I Swapped My Dad fr Tw Gldfish”. The bk is a funny adventure f a sn searching fr the dad he swapped.
Whether they realize it r nt, fathers play an imprtant rle in their children’s develpment. Rland Warren, Directr f the Natinal Fatherhd Initiative, says that, “The shape f their dads has a rle in the kids’ sul.” I agree. We live in the best f times and the wrst f times fr fatherhd. We live in the best f times because fathers wh are engaged in their child’s life spend mre time than fathers f any previus generatin. We live in the wrst f times because there are still millins f children wh cntinue t miss the regular presence f Dad.
What difference des a dad make? Are they really that imprtant? Fr the mst part, studies have prved clearly that fathers, whether they live with their children r nt, matter in the lives f their children. When fathers are present, they prvide ecnmic supprt fr their children and caregiving respnsibilities. Well-fathered children are shwn t be mre emtinally intelligent and scially successful as adults. When fathers are absent, their absence may negatively influence children’s academic achievement, general behaviural adjustment and anger management, especially in males.
Yet just being physically present isn’t enugh t be a great father. It is imprtant that a dad be warm and emtinally available t his child. Authr and researcher, Jhn Gttman, describes this kind f father as an “emtin caching father”. Emtin caches are parents wh listen t their children’s feelings, see the sharing f feelings as an pprtunity fr intimacy(亲密). It is nt just the mere presence f fathers that matters, but hw they are present. Mst children lng fr and need a lving, devted and respnsible father.

B.Lts f children’s fathers have t wrk every day.
C.Lts f children’s fathers are absent frm their lives.

A.lse cntrl f anger B.btain high academic achievement
C.have lw emtinal intelligence D.have gd scial skills
4、We can learn frm the text that an “emtin caching father” is a father wh ______.
