21.(6分)It's cmfrting t think if yu were smehw swallwed by a whale, yu'd simply hang ut in his stmach until he eventually spat yu ut, unharmed and whle. Unfrtunately, yur chance f ending up in this type f situatin is pretty lw.
In 2012 reprter Ben Shattuck read the recrds at the New Bedfrd Whaling Museum Research Library. Despite his extensive research at ne f the mst cmprehensive whaling archives(档案), he failed t find a single reprt f anyne ever being swallwed alive by a whale. He fund plenty f reprts f whalers wh were bitten r injured by the creatures, and several wh died after fighting with a whale, but nne related t swallwing.
With whales' large muths, it certainly seems pssible that a whale culd swallw smene whle, s why is it s unlikely? Baleen whales, r whales withut teeth, are sme f the largest creatures n the planet. Despite their massive size, baleen whales culd never get yu int their bellies thanks t their relatively small esphagus(食道). These whales are designed t eat small sea creatures, and the pening in their thrat is nly abut as large as a baske tball, s yu'd never make it that far.
But what abut tthed whales? Sperm whales eat whle seals, s yu culd easily fit dwn their thrats and int their stmachs. Hwever, nce yu reached the first f the sperm whale's fur stmachs, yur jurney wuld prbably end quickly. Nt nly wuld the whale's stmach acid make quick wrk f yu, but yu'd experience a distinct lack f air n the inside. Actually, yu're mre likely t get eaten r injured as yu try t make it past the sperm whale's sharp teeth. Plenty f whalers, have fught with sperm whales and lst their hands r lives due t these mean teeth.
1、What did Ben Shattuck's research in 2012 shw?
A.Many peple had been killed by whales.
B.Only a single whale had swallwed peple.
C.Whales had ften been injured by whalers.
D.N whales had been fund swallwing peple.
2、What can we learn abut baleen whales in this text?
A.They have nly a few teeth.
B.They like big sea creatures best.
C.They have relatively small esphagus.
D.They are the largest animals in the wrld.
3、What is the mst likely tl fr sperm whales t injure humans?
A.Their thrats.
B.The fur stmachs.
C.The inside f the stmach.
D.The mean teeth.

A.Will Whales Kill Humans?
B.Can Whales Swallw Peple Alive?
C.D Whales nly Eat Small Creatures?
D.Hw Can Peple Research n Whales?
22.(8分) Maths and Music An excellent way t kill a cnversatin is t say yu are a mathematician. Tell thers yu are als a musician, hwever, and they will be hked. Althugh there are bvius similarities between mathematical and musical activity, there is n direct evidence fr the kind f magical cnnectin many peple seem t believe in.
I'm partly referring here t the "Mzart effect", where children wh have been playing Mzart cmpsitins are suppsedly mre intelligent, including at maths, than ther children. It is nt hard t see why such a thery wuld be ppular: we wuld all like t becme better at maths withut putting in any effrt. But the cnclusins f the experiment that expressed the belief in the Mzart effect were much mre mdest. If yu want yur brain t wrk better, yu clearly have t put in hard wrk. As fr learning t play the pian, it als takes effrt.
Surely a cnnectin is quite reasnable. Bth maths and music deal with abstract structures, s if yu becme gd at ne, then it is likely that yu becme gd at smething mre general that helps yu with the ther. If this is crrect, it wuld shw a cnnectin between mathematical and musical ability. It wuld be mre like the cnnectin between abilities at ftball and tennis. T becme better at ne, yu need t imprve yur fitness and crdinatin (协调). That makes yu better at sprt and prbably helps with the ther.
Abstract structures dn't exist nly in maths and music. If yu learn a language then yu need t understand its abstract structures like grammar. Yet we dn't hear peple asking abut a cnnectin between mathematical and linguistic (语言的) ability. Maybe this is because grammar feels mathematical, s it wuldn't be surprising that mathematicians were better at learning grammar. Music, hwever, is strngly tied up with feelings and can be enjyed even by peple wh knw little abut it. As such, it seems different frm maths, s there wuldn't be any cnnectin between the tw.
Let's see hw we slve prblems f the "A is t B as C is t D" kind. These appear in intelligence tests but they are als imprtant t bth music and maths. Cnsider the pening f Mzart's Eine Kleine Nachtmusik (小夜曲). The secnd phrase (小节) is a clear answer t the first. The listener thinks: "The first phrase ges upward and uses the ntes f a G majr chrd (和弦); what wuld be the crrespnding phrase that ges dwnward and uses the ntes f a D7?" Music is full f puzzles like this. If yu are gd at them, expectatins will cnstantly be set up in yur mind. The best mments surprise yu by being unexpected, but we need the expectatins in the first place.
1、What des the authr say abut "Mzart effect"? ______
A.The gal f it was nt carefully thught abut.
B.The findings frm it gave peple wrng infrmatin.
C.The interest peple shwed in it was unexpected.
D.The way it was carried ut prved t be ineffective.
2、The authr mentined ftball and tennis in Paragraph 3t shw that ______ .
A.ftball and tennis are played in a similar way.
B.certain skills may be develped thrugh practice.
C.music and maths have smething in cmmn.
D.abstract structures bring benefits t varius fields.
3、We can infer frm Paragraph 4that ______ .
A.language seems mre like maths than music des.
B.language is less appealing t learners.
C.mathematicians are gd at music learning.
D.the structure f language is easier t learn than that f music.
4、What des the writer intend t state in the last paragraph? ______
A.Hw music differs frm maths.
B.Why musicians pssess mathematical abilities.
C.Why Mzart is s highly cnsidered by mathematicians.
D.Hw abstract thinking applies t bth music and maths.
23.(8分)One evening at a busy crssrads, I nticed a sister struggling t keep her little kid under cntrl while she talked n the pay phne. She wanted him t stay still next t her, but he wanted t run and play by the rad, clse t rushing buses and taxis. One culd sense the wman’s frustratin, that she was pulled in t many directins: She was angry at the persn n the telephne and shuting at the yunger that she wuld “snap(折断)his leg” if he mved again. As I waited fr the traffic light t change, the child began t cmplain and struggle t free himself frm the wman’s grasp. She drpped the phne, seized(抓住)the neck f his tiny. T-shirt and gave him a back-hand blw acrss the face that I knw made his little head spin.
The light changed, and passers-by cntinued n their way. But I std there, fixed t the pavement. I knew this extremely upset wman wuld carry thrugh n her threat f vilence t the child. Befre, I had wanted t get clse t her and ffer t watch the yungster while she dealt with the trubling situatin n the phne. Nw I wanted t cmfrt the little by. I als wanted t speak t the sister t calm her and t cautin(告诫)her, as I wish smene had cautined me when I was passing my pain n t my daughter and causing her emtinal suffering. But I was chicken. I thught, she may think I’m ut f line, r I may be her next target.
Often I’ve thught abut that child and the many thers abused(虐待)by adults. I wnder hw they will internalize(使……藏在心底)their pain, and if it will crush their spirits. Will this little by grw up t be an abusive man? Will he be glmy(阴郁的,沮丧的)and withdrawn(孤僻,内向的)? Will he find it hard t cmmunicate with wmen, with ther men? Or will he survive and be sensitive, caring and determined nt t cntinue the cycle?
There is t much cruelty(残忍)in the wrld, t much cruelty between peple. I tremble at the increasing verbal(言语的)bitterness and vilence amng Black girls, and amng yung mthers trying t discipline their children. This behavir isn’t class-r age-related: I hear sharp wrds frm Black wmen frm all walks f life wh are verwrked and stressed ut and have grwn impatient. At times I, t, becme implite t thers, r, like the sister n the phne, strike ut at(抨击)thse clsest t me.
Often we’re tired because we've made the wrng chices. Yung girls wh still need mthering are laded with children. We sisters easily get hurt and annyed when we dn’t cmprmise with ur wn sense f self. Our persnal fulfillment requires knwing what is best fr us, setting ur bundaries(界限)and keeping them undamaged. We will always be asked t d mre than we are cmfrtable ding. When we knw ur bundaries, we can decline cmfrtably. Peple—and we urselves—will act in ways we dn’t like. But they, like us, are still wrthy f lve.
Whatever irritates(激怒)us abut a persn shuld be examined. Is the persn reflecting behavir in us that needs t be changed? Often, when I find peple irritating, I find they mirrr smething abut me that I need t crrect.
What’s needed in ur persnal relatinships is a return t gentleness and tlerance(容忍). We must allw ne anther ur learning experiences. Just as vilence results t vilence, verbal vilence—the hard wrds and sharp tnes we use t release inner stress—adds t the distance between us.
What we peple f African rt must d t becme, and cntinue t be strng begins with lve, sensitivity and ur ability t wrk tgether. We Black wmen have these spiritual resurces in abundance(丰富). Nw we must encurage them t create a peaceful place—fr urselves, ur children, ur men.

D.“Yu are walking in the wrng directin.”
3、The wrng chices the authr mentins in Paragraph 5 include ________.
a. We sisters refuse t marry yung
b. We aren’t satisfied with urselves
c. We have ur bundaries damaged
d. We decline thers’ requests fr help
A.a, b B.c, d
C.a, d D.b, c
4、Accrding t the authr, when we find a persn irritating, we shuld ________.
A.return t gentleness and tlerance
B.reflect n ur behavir that needs crrecting
C.avid the hard wrds and sharp tnes
D.examine if anything is wrng with him
24.(8分)Nwadays with the ppularity f the Internet many peple cmplain f the difficulty f finding their “true” identity in amngst all the cnflicting messages and demands f the wrld arund them.
This idea, that , smewhere deep dwn, is the “real” us, is as ld as philsphy itself. It invlves things like ur values, ur sense f purpse, the beliefs that make us wh we are. We ften ask the questin, “Are yu living the life yu want t be living , r the life ther peple want yu t live?”
The Internet has brught the pinins f thers t ur wn lives as never befre, and it is threatening ur ability t understand wh we really are.
T discver ur true selves, maybe it’s time t discnnect. Nt frever, that wuld be thrwing the baby ut with the bathwater, but fr significant perids f ur days, weeks, r mnths. Because, with discnnectin cmes quiet and with quiet cmes the ability t reflect.
In researching my Wrld Service dcumentary Default Wrld, I spke t a lt f peple abut their experience f technlgy. Many said they were trying t spend less time nline, taking a break frm Facebk, cnnecting nly when they needed t. And they spke with pleasure f rediscvering the physical wrld arund them and the wrld f human-t-human cmmunicatin. I think this is encuraging.
We are still learning hw t be n the Internet, what effect this huge netwrk f cmputers---a netwrk we have built urselves---has n ur sense f self. We are at the mment, as Threau said f peple in the industrial revlutin, “tls f ur tls”.
Discnnecting gives us a chance t turn the tables t see the Internet nt as smething that verwhelms(使不知所措)us but as a tl, which we use when we need it. Only then can we really understand wh we are and what we can give the wrld. And that, deep dwn, is the real tt f ur identity.

3、What des the underlined phrase “turn the tables” in the last paragraph prbably mean?
A.T win a victry.
B.T fllw a trend.
C.T change the situatin.
D.T slve the prblem.
4、In which part f a newspaper can we read the text?
A.Lifestyle.
B.Nature.
C.Science.
D.Health.

Michael kept begging fr singing t his sister, but kids are nt allwed in the pediatric department at St. Mary’s Hspital. Karen made up her mind t take Michael t see his sister. She dressed him in an versized suit and marched him int the hspital. Karen twed Michael t his sister’s bedside. He gazed at the tiny baby lsing the battle t live. And he began t sing. In the pure-hearted vice f a 3-year-ld, Michael sang, “Yu are my sunshine, my nly sunshine. Yu make me happy when skies are grey.” Instantly the baby girl respnded.
