23.(8分)Happy Birthday t Me (and My Mm)
Frty-three years ag my mther went int labur fr the secnd time. It was either very late New Year’s Day r very early n the secnd day f 1969 depending n hw yu lked at it but either way, it was a full week past her due date when my mm wke up knwing it was time t wake my dad up, get dressed, pack up the car and head t the hspital. Her regular dctr was n vacatin and when they reached the hspital they planned t deliver in were tld that the dctr was n his way t anther hspital s they shuld head there, in a neighburing city. Mst surprising t me nw is that she felt well enugh t attend a New Year’s party the previus night and stayed lng enugh t tast in the new year!
My mm and her family had immigrated t the United States just twenty years earlier frm El Salvadr. And that was a lucky thing fr me. Nt nly did my mm gain access t a better educatin and career ptins here in the US fr herself, each f her three daughters wuld als enjy her access t quality maternity (孕产妇的) care. While the US is hardly the wrld leader in maternal health r birth utcmes, these days a wman faces a 1 in 2,100 risk f dying during her life and in El Salvadr, it’s 1 in 350-6 times wrse. In 1969, that difference was even greater.
Hwever, I was pregnant with my secnd child in El Salvadr six years ag when I realized hw very different my life might have turned ut if I’d lived there when I delivered my first child. I travelled dwn there with CARE, the humanitarian relief rganizatin, whse effrts my mm had lng supprted, t see sme f their principal prgrammes in actin. Amng them was ne in particular that remains with me tday. It was a water prject where pregnant wmen, many f whm had walked miles t access this clean water, receive sme basic care befre r after childbirth. Here these wmen were, facing the exact same physical challenges as me but still carrying the full wrk lad f the family and with little t n resurces fr infrmatin, care, transprtatin r cmfrt during r after their pregnancies.
By this time, I was all t aware f what a challenge childbirth culd be. After delivering my daughter in 2003, I survived a hemrrhage (大出血), the leading childbirth-related cmplicatin that takes the lives f thusands f ther mthers all ver the wrld. One girl r wman dies every 90 secnds in pregnancy r childbirth frm what is in mst cases a preventable death. I was as shcked as yu are when I discvered this fact but I was als grateful. Grateful because I had been in the care f a team f health wrkers when I needed them mst.
I thught f my mther’s life. While she had been brn in a gd hspital in San Salvadr in the 1930’s, at that time pregnancy-related deaths were cmmn even in the US. My great grandmther als hemrrhaged, nly after delivering her fifth child and she died. Her husband, my mm’s grandfather was a physician at the time. He wuld give up practising medicine frever when he culdn’t save her.
But it wasn’t nly my mm and her family that I thught f as I cnsidered my wn fate and gd frtune, it was all thse wmen I’d spent the day with in the rural cmmunity I’d visited with CARE. We’d made a cnnectin that day, we mthers, as wmen. These wmen did nt have access t the simple interventins (介入) that culd insure their survival and that’s what cncerned me. It did mre than cncern me, it wke me up and begged this questin, why shuld any ne life be f different value than any ther?
And s, I made the cmmitment right there and then t d all I culd t imprve maternal health and reduce the number f maternal deaths arund the glbe.

24.(8分)There is a breakthrugh in building aircrafts. Bendable wings cvered with verlapping(部分重叠) pieces resembling fish sizes culd be used t build swifter, fuel-efficient aircraft, a new study finds.
Nwadays, cnventinal aircrafts typically rely n ailerns (副翼) t help cntrl the way the planes tip as they fly. Hwever, when the Wright brthers flew the first airplane, Flyer 1, ver a century ag, they used n ailerns but wires and pulleys that twisted the wd-and-canvas wings, t cntrl the plane,
Scientists have lng sught t develp aircrafts that can alter their wings during flight, just as birds can. Hwever, mst previus attempts have failed because they relied n heavy mechanical cntrl structures within the wings. These structures were als cmplex and unreliable, said Neil Gershenfeld, a physicist and directr f the Center fr Bits and Atms at Massachusetts Institute f Technlgy (MIT).
The new wing cnsists f a system f tiny, strng, lightweight mdules. The shape f the wing can be changed unifrmly alng its length using tw small mtrs, which apply a twisting pressure t each wingtip. These wings are cvered in “skins” f verlapping strips f flexible material resembling fish sizes. These strips mve acrss each ther as the wings alter, prviding a smth uter surface, the researchers explained.
Wind-tunnel tests f these wings shwed that they at least matched the aerdynamic prperties f cnventinal wings, at abut ne-tenth the weight. Initial tests using remtely pilted aircrafts made with these wings have shwn great prmise, said Benjamin Jenett, a graduate student at the Center fr Bits and Atms at MIT.
The new mdular structures the scientists develped culd be manufactured quickly in mass quantities and then installed by teams f small rbts. These mdular structures als can be disassembled mre easily, making repairs simpler.
“Still, the first aircraft built using this strategy will nt be a passenger jet, ”Gershenfeld said. “Instead, the technlgy will likely first be tested n unmanned aircraft, leading t drnes (无人机) that can fly fr a lng time, t help deliver internet access r medicine t remte villages and d sme rescue wrks.”
1、Why did mst previus aircrafts fail t fly like birds?
A.The previus wings were cmplicated and weighed a lt.
B.The previus aircraft relied n ailerns t cntrl directins.
C.There were few scientists t d research n the lighter wings.
D.There was little fuel in the aircrafts t make them fly in the air.
2、What is the furth paragraph mainly abut?
A.The shape f the new wings.
B.The result f the tested wings.
C.The functin f the small mtrs.
D.The wrking principle f the new wings.
3、Which f the fllwing can replace the underlined wrd“disassembled”in Paragraph 6?
      A.put away
      B.taken apart
      C.invented
      D.analyzed
4、What will the drnes made by the new wings be firstly used t d?

      B.Save peple in danger.
      C.Test planes.
      D.Mnitr the villages.
25.(10分)Scientists think they have answered a mystery: Hw sme cean creatures gt s huge s quickly.
A few millin years ag, the largest whales, averaged abut 15 feet lng. Then seemingly vernight, ne type f whale, the tthless baleen whale(须鲸类)became huge. Mdern blue whales get as big as 100 feet. Nichlas Pyensn f the Smithsnian Natural Histry Museum said, “Why is that?” ”It happened in the glance f an evlutinary eye, which makes it harder t figure ut what happened,” said Graham Slater, lead authr f the study. Their study has suggested an answer: Ice ages in the last 3 t 5 millin years started it, changing the ceans and fd supply fr whales.
The researchers used fssil recrds f the smaller whales t create a family tree fr baleen whales which include blue whales, humpbacks and right whales. Using cmputer simulatins(模拟)and knwledge abut hw evlutin wrks, they cncluded that when the size changes started, the ples gt clder, ice expanded and the water circulatin in the ceans changed and winds shifted, Slater and Pyensn said cld water went deep and mved clser t the equatr(赤道)and then eventually mved back up with small fish and ther small animals that whales eat.
Baleen whale, which have n teeth, feed by eating huge amunts f fish they capture. Tthed whales, like sperm whales (抹香鲸), hunt individual fish, s the cean chants that made fd less evenly spread ut didn’t affect them as much. But baleen whales hunt schls f fish.
Olivier Lambert at the Ryal Belgian Institute f Natural Sciences calls it “a really cnvincing situatin”. But he said the lack f fssils in certain time perids is an issue. As ceans warm frm man-made climate change, the seas will be mre like it was when the whales smaller and they will have a mre difficult time surviving.
1、What des the authr mean by “It happened in the glance f an evlutinary eye” in the secnd paragraph?
A.The change f baleen whales happened t quickly.
B.The change f baleen whales was t difficult t explre.
C.Researchers paid little attentin t the change f baleen whales.
D.Researchers thught the change f baleen whales was unimprtant.
2、What played the key rle in baleen whales’ becming huge?
      A.Man-made climate change.
      B.Its eating a huge amunt f fish.
C.The water circulatin in the ceans.
D.The increase f fd supply fr whales.
3、What d we knw abut sperm whales and blue whales accrding t the text?
      A.Sperm whales eat mre fd.
      B.Blue whaler live much lnger.
C.Sperm whales prefer t hunt schls f fish.
D.Blue whales usually swallw schls f fish.
