21.(6分)By trying t tickle(挠痒痒) rats and recrding hw their nerve cells respnd, Shimpei Ishiyama and his adviser are discvering a mystery that has puzzled thinkers since Aristtle expected that humans, given their thin skin and unique ability t laugh, were the nly ticklish animals.
It turns ut that Aristtle was wrng. In their study published n Thursday, Ishiyama and his adviser Michael Brecht fund that rats squeaked and jumped with pleasure when tickled n their backs and bellies. These signs f jy changed accrding t their mds. And fr the first time, they discvered a special grup f nerve cells. These nerve cells made this feeling s pwerful that it causes an individual being tickled t lse cntrl.
T make sure that he had indeed fund a place in the brain where tickling was prcessed, Ishiyama then stimulated(刺激) that area with electrical currents. The rats began t jump like rabbits and sing like birds.
“It’s truly grund-breaking,” said Jeffrey Burgdrf, a neurscientist at Nrthwestern University wh reviewed the paper. “It takes the study f emtin t a new level.”
Burgdrf has played a central rle in ur understanding f animal tickling. He was part f a team that first nticed, in the late 1990s, that rats made special nises when they were experiencing scial pleasure. Others had already nted that rats repeatedly made shrt and high sunds during meals. But the lab where Burgdrf wrked nticed that they emitted similar sunds while playing. And s ne day, the senir scientist in the lab said, “Let’s g and tickle sme rats.” They quickly fund that thse cries f pleasure dubled.
“The authrs have been very adventurus,” said Daniel O’Cnnr, a neurscientist at Jhns Hpkins University wh studies tuch. T him, that finding was very surprising.
“Why des the wrld literally feel different when yu are stressed ut?” he said. “This is the first step twards answering that questin. It gives us a way t apprach it with experimental rigr(严谨).”

22.(8分) As the parent f a 7-year-ld by, smetimes I feel like “n” is my mst frequently said wrd. But if I lk hnestly at the big picture f my daily vcabulary, I prbably wuld cnclude that it actually cntains t much “yes”. Saying yes means pening myself up t new experiences, inviting new r deeper relatinships. But t much “yes” leaves any f us feeling anxius, vercmmitted(过分受约束的)and pwerless t set and maintain bundaries in ur lives.
This had been n my mind when The Bk f N: 365 Ways t Say It and Mean It-and Stp Peple-Pleasing.
Frever came acrss my desk. The new editin f this decade-ld bk by psychlgist Susan Newman is a must-read bk fr thse f us wh struggle t say “n” with authenticity, cnfidence and kindness.
Newman calls peple wh feel frced t say yes all their way thrugh life “peple-pleasers”. The chief symptms f this cnditin include assciating helping thers with yur self-respect, hlding expectatins that yu will care fr thers and feeling unwilling t state yur wn needs when a request cmes yur way. Fr peple-pleasers, “yes is the path f least resistance and the way t avid damaging yur relatinship with the asker,” Newman writes.
The bk ffers brief dialgues fr hundreds f scenaris in which “n” is the right answer, fr reasns ranging frm time management t financial pressures t emtinal bundaries. Newman cnsiders what came abut amng friends, at wrk, within families and in parenting. Reading thrugh the scenaris, I realized they have sme things in cmmn-things that immediately started helping me imprve my “n” skills.
D yu think this bk might be helpful t yu? It’s OK if the answer is “n”, but I d highly recmmend it fr yur Psitive Reading List shelf.
1、Why des the authr include his wn persnal experience in Paragraph 1?
A.T blame himself.B.T shw hw t guide kids.
C.T tell his likes and dislikes.D.T help recmmend a bk.
2、What is mainly talked abut in Paragraph 3?
A.Hw t deal with a request.
B.Why askers turn t thers fr a favr.
C.Why peple-pleasers say “yes” t ften.
D.Hw t strengthen relatinships with askers.
3、What des the underlined wrd “scenaris” prbably mean?
A.Occasins.B.Prcesses.
C.Adventures.D.Stries.
4、What des the authr advise us t d?
A.Give n respnse t any demand.
B.Learn t say “n” in a psitive way.
C.Keep pen all channels f cmmunicatin.
D.Say “yes” cnstantly withut feeling guilty.
23.(8分)When American sldiers return hme frm war with disabilities, they ften suffer twice—first frm their cmbat injuries, next frm the humiliatin(羞辱)f gvernment dependency.
Wunded veterans(老兵)learn they have tw basic chices: They can receive almst $ 3 ,000 a mnth in disability benefits alng with medical care and access t ther varius welfare prgrams, r they can try t find a jb. Especially in this ecnmy, it’s n wnder that many find that first ptin hard t turn dwn.
Mark Duggan, an ecnmics prfessr at Stanfrd University, reprts that enrllment in the U. S. veterans’ disability prgrams rse frm 2.3 millin in 2001 t 3.9 millin in 2014. The percentage f veterans receiving benefits dubled, frm 8.9% in 2001 t 18% in 2014. Disability services fr veterans nw cnsume $59 billin.
In the 1980s and 1990s, male veterans were mre likely t be in the labr frce than nnveterans. But since 2000, that has changed dramatically. Nw there is a 4% gap between veteran and nn-veteran labr participatin, with veteran participatin lwer.
Navy SEAL Eric Greitens, the funder f The Missin Cntinues, explains hw sldiers wh served their cuntry are transfrmed int welfare receivers wh live ff their cuntry.
“When veterans cme hme frm war they are ging thrugh a tremendus change in identity, ” he says. “Then the United States Department f Veterans Affairs, and thers, encurage them t view themselves as disabled.” By the time they cme t Greitens’ nn-prfit rganizatin, “We meet a number f veterans wh see themselves as charity cases and are nt sure anymre what they have t cntribute.”
There are als mre practical factrs driving the disability bm. One is the expansin f qualificatin criteria. In 2000, fr instance, type 2 diabetes was added as a disability because f evidence linking expsure t Agent Orange with the nset f the disease. Heart disease has als been added t the list.
Anther pssible factr is that yunger veterans seem less against welfare than their parents’ generatin. Veterans wh have served since the 1990s are much mre likely t sign up fr disability than their lder cunterparts; 1 in 4 yunger veterans is n disability, versus just 1 in 7 f thse ver age 54.
We shuldn’t g back t the bad ld days when veterans were afraid t admit weakness. But Lt. Cl. Daniel Gade is ne f many veterans wh think ur disability system is harmful, psychlgically, t frmer sldiers. Gade lst his leg in cmbat in 2005 and nw teaches at West Pint. He recently gave a talk t disabled veterans at Ft. Carsn, in which he urged them t rejin the wrkfrce.
“Peple wh stay hme because they are getting paid enugh t get by n disability are wrse ff,” he warned. “They are mre likely t abuse drugs and alchl. They are mre likely t live alne.”
What a waste f human ptential, especially since mst veterans n disability still have their prime wrking years ahead f them when they’re discharged(遣退).
We culd slve this prblem by changing the way we view-and label-veterans with disabilities. As Gade nted in a recent article, “Veterans shuld be viewed as resurces, nt as damaged gds.” He recmmended that “effrts t help veterans shuld begin by recgnizing their abilities rather than fcusing nly n then disabilities, and shuld serve the ultimate aim f mving wunded sldiers t real self-sufficiency.”
On a mre practical nte, the United States Department f Veterans Affairs culd reallcate(再分配)resurces t spend mre n jb training and less n disability. Current placement prgrams are sadly inadequate.
We are gd at sending sldiers ff t war. Yet when these yung men and wmen return hme, they are essentially tld, “We’ll give yu enugh fr a reasnably cmfrtable life, but we wn’t help yu find a jb.”
It is unreasnable that we are cndemning thusands f yung veterans wh served their cuntry t life n the dle(失业救济金)rather than enabling them t re-enter the wrkfrce with the necessary accmmdatins.
1、What d mre and mre wunded veterans appear t d nwadays?
A.Depend n the gvernment fr a living.
B.Be treated badly in mst wrkplaces.
C.Ask the gvernment fr mre dle.
D.Spend mre time n jb hunting.
2、Hw des Mark Duggan prve his pinin in the passage?
A.By listing figures. B.By giving examples.
C.By perfrming experiments. D.By analyzing cause and effect.
3、What did veterans use t d in the 1980s and 1990s?
A.Refuse t find jbs. B.Be a main labr resurce.
C.Have much truble finding jbs. D.Receive many disability benefits.
