Many parents d nt understand why their teens ccasinally behave in a dangerus way. At times, it seems like teens dn’t think things thrugh r fully cnsider the results f their actins. Teens differ frm adults in the way they behave, slve prblems, and make decisins. There is a bilgical explanatin fr this difference. Studies shw that brains cntinue t develp thrughut childhd and teenage years and well int early adulthd.
Scientists have cnfirmed (确认) a specific area f the brain called the amygdala that is respnsible fr immediate reactins, including fear and aggressive behavir. This area develps early. Hwever, the frntal crtex, the area f the brain that helps peple think carefully, cntrl behavir, and make wise decisins, develps later. Unlike the amygdala, the frntal crtex is nt fully mature (成熟) until adulthd.
Other changes in the brain during teenage years include a rapid increase in the cnnectins between the brain cells, making the brain pathways mre effective. Nerve cells develp myelin, which helps cells cmmunicate. All these changes are imprtant fr the develpment f crdinated (协调的) thught, actin, and behavir.
Pictures f the brain in actin shw that teens’ brains wrk differently frm adults’ when they make decisins r slve prblems. Their actins are guided mre by the emtinal and reactive amygdala and less by the thughtful, lgical frntal crtex. Studies als indicate that drinking alchl during the teenage years can change r delay these develpments.
These brain differences dn’t mean that yung peple can’t make gd decisins r tell the difference between right and wrng. It als desn’t mean that they shuldn’t be held respnsible fr their actins. Hwever, an awareness f these differences can help parents, teachers, and thers understand and manage the behavir f teens during this imprtant stage f grwth.
      4. Why d teens ften act differently frm adults accrding t the text?
      A. Their brains are still develping.
      B. Their amygdala is easier t cntrl.
      C. They badly need life experience.
      D. They are mre influenced by thers.
      5. What d we knw abut the frntal crtex?

      B. It matures late and cntrls reasning.
      C. It is cmpletely frmed in childhd.
      D. It wrks mainly with bdy mvements.
      6. Studies shw that teens’ decisin-making is mre impacted by ________.
      A. their actinsB. learned knwledge
      C. their feelingsD. lng-term planning
      7. What des the authr expect parents and teachers t d?

Fast-mving birds like gshawks can fly quickly thrugh thick frests withut hitting trees. They seem t avid danger naturally while mving at high speed. Hwever, researchers at the Massachusetts Institute f Technlgy (MIT) have discvered that there is a speed limit. If birds r drnes (无人机) g faster than this limit, a crash is unavidable. The finding may help scientists design better unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) by learning frm hw birds fly.
Mst UAVs are currently designed t fly at relatively slw speed, allwing them t stp befre reaching the edge f their field f view. Yu might think that adding mre sensrs wuld allw drnes t fly faster and safer, but MIT aerspace engineer Emili Frazzli says therwise.
Frazzli and his team created a mathematical mdel that shws a bird r drne flying thrugh crwded spaces, such as frests r cities, will always crash nce it reaches a certain speed, n matter hw much it knws abut its surrundings.
The team believes that birds avid this prblem by judging the density (密度) f their envirnment and changing their speed accrdingly, knwing that they can always find a gap t fly thrugh. This allws a bird t fly much faster than if it just depends n the limits f its visin. Frazzli says that skiers use a similar methd.
“When yu g skiing ff the path, yu dn’t ski in a way that yu can always stp befre the first tree yu see,” he says. “Yu ski and yu see an pening, and then yu trust that nce yu g there, yu’ll be able t see anther pening and keep ging.”
Frazzli is nw wrking with bilgists at Harvard University t cnfirm whether his mdel matches the behaviur f real birds. His team is als designing a flying vide game t test hw well humans can mve thrugh a virtual frest at high speed, t see hw clse players can get t the theretical limit predicted (预测) by the mdel.
      8. Why are mst UAVs designed t fly at lw speed at present?
      A. T stp safely within their view.B. T avid lsing signals in frests.
      C. T reduce damage frm crashes.D. T save pwer during lng flights.
      9. Hw are birds able t fly faster in dense frests?
      A. They can see blcks earlier than mst machines.
      B. They depend n sharper eyesight than machines.
      C. They adjust speed based n the space arund them.
      D. They fllw the fixed paths between twering trees.
      10. Why des Frazzli mentin skiing in paragraph 5?
      A. T cmpare skiing skills with bird flight.B. T describe dangers while skiing ff paths.
      C. T present a ppular sprts event in winter.D. T give an example f safe fast mvement.
      11. Which is the mst suitable title fr the text?
      A. Birds Teach Us Hw t Get a Sense f DirectinB. Speed Limit fr Birds Culd Mean Better UAVs
      C. Advanced UAVs Will Cme n the Market SnD. Flying Vide Games Help Test Human Reactins
      【答案】8. A 9. C 10. D 11. B
      【语篇解读】这是一篇说明文,文章主要介绍麻省理工学院研究发现鸟类安全飞行存在一个速度极限,这一发现可以帮助科学家改进无人机设计。
【8题详解】细节理解题。根据第二段中“Mst UAVs are currently designed t fly at relatively slw speed, allwing them t stp befre reaching the edge f their field f view.(目前大多数无人机的设计飞行速度相对较慢,这样它们能够在到达视野边缘之前停下来)”可知,目前无人机设计成低速是为了能在自身视野范围内安全停下,故选A。
【9题详解】细节理解题。根据第四段中“The team believes that birds avid this prblem by judging the density (密度) f their envirnment and changing their speed accrdingly, knwing that they can always find a gap t fly thrugh. This allws a bird t fly much faster than if it just depends n the limits f its visin.(该团队认为,鸟类通过判断其环境的密度并相应地改变飞行速度来避免这个问题,它们知道总能找到一个缝隙飞过去。这使得鸟类能够飞行得比仅仅依靠其视觉极限时更快)”可知,鸟类通过判断环境密度、根据周围空间调整速度来实现在密林中快速飞行,故选C。

Mars nce had a thick, warm air rich in carbn dixide (CO2), but that carbn has been trapped in its rcks fr thusands f years. That’s the stry shwn by a hidden secret f carbn-bearing minerals unearthed by NASA’s Curisity rver (探测器) alng its rute up a Martian muntain. This finding gives us the first clear prf f a carbn cycle n Mars, and shws why the planet’s life-friendly climate disappeared.
Lng ag, Mars had abundant water and a warm climate, supprted by a thick CO2 atmsphere. But tday, the planet is a cld, dry desert with almst n atmsphere. Scientists lng wndered where all that CO2 went. Gechemist Benjamin Tutl and his team thught it must be lcked in carbnate (碳酸盐) minerals, but previus searches hadn’t fund enugh t explain the lss.
In 2022 and 2023, Curisity drve acrss a regin where the rcks change frm sft, wet clay — marking the great drying f Mars. The rver drilled fur samples (样品) frm different rcks and used its nbard lab t study them. The research team identified siderite, a carbnate mineral that frms when water, rck and heat interact and then dry ut. Each sample held between 5 and 10 percent siderite by weight-much mre than expected. “We fund it here, fr the first time,” Tutl said, “That’s the main pint that makes this cl here. This discvery brings us much clser t slving the carbn mystery.”
This wrk prvides a great explanatin fr hw Mars culd nce supprt rivers and lakes, yet later lst its warm air. Lking ahead, scientists hpe t match rbital data with grund findings and, finally, return samples t Earth fr further research. In the meantime, Curisity’s discvery shines a bright new light n Mars’ change frm a habitable wrld t the dry desert we see tday.
      12. Where is the carbn that nce kept Mars warm accrding t the text?
      A. It has been lcked in Mars’ rcks.
      B. It has escaped int the atmsphere.
      C. It is trapped in the lakes and rivers.
      D. It is drawn by a sea f burning sands.
      13. Which best explains the underlined wrd “abundant” in paragraph 2?
      A. Salty.B. Dirty.
      C. Plentiful.D. Drinkable.
      14. Hw did Tutl feel abut the discvery?
      A. Wrried.B. Excited.
      C. Dubtful.D. Regretful.
      15. What can be learned abut the discvery?
      A. It mismatches these grund findings.
      B. It accunts fr climate change n ur planet.
      C. It brings us clser t slving energy prblems.
      D. It might explain why Mars lst its habitable climate.
      【答案】12. A 13. C 14. B 15. D
