When I was yunger, I culdn’t wait t escape frm Ramsgate, the harbr twn where I
grew up n the Isle f Thanet. It culd feel small: the same faces in the same places, and where a new café r gallery was ften met with dubt. There was this apparent insistence that life was fine as it was. But fr a teenager itching t see mre, that lack f curisity was disheartening.
S I left. I headed nrth fr a fur-year academic jurney frm Yrk t Durham. After
university, having played at newspapers, I made the mve t Lndn t d it fr real. But the
reality was tugh. I struggled t cntribute t varius dailies befre perids n staff at bth
magazines and newspapers. In my twenties, I threw myself int city life: sampling Mediterranean restaurants, navigating arund n the Tube, and staying ut late with friends.
Fr a while, it was enugh. Then it became t much. In and amng the sharing plates, I fund myself n an unending rat race f mving faster and needing t earn mre —just t keep
up. Rents in Lndn were pressing, apartments were tiny, yet the dream f wning ne felt like a cruel jke.
As I gt lder, trips back t Thanet pened my eyes t what I had left behind. Mainly, it
was the sea. Wide yellw sands and even the tuch f salt in the air, rdinary in childhd,
suddenly felt appealing. But I als started t miss the beat f small-twn life: waving t peple n the street, nticing whse garden was vergrwn, finding charm even in the pubs I had nce
dismissed. What’s mre, where I’d nce hurried t leave, thers are nw rushing t arrive. Artists, creatives, and technlgists have been priced ut f Lndn and are puring t Thanet, bringing
new ideas and drive. Nw, when I head back hme, I feel a mixture f pride and mild wnder: the place I nce thught I’d utgrwn has had a facelift I wasn’t expecting.
I’ll keep returning t Thanet, with eager willingness. Each visit reminds me that places, like peple, can grw withut lsing their essence. I’ve cme t lve Thanet as mre than just the

Old fishing nets may lk useless, but they add up. The Fd and Agriculture Organizatin estimates fishers thrw away arund 640,000 tns f nets every year. The waste als rts
extremely slwly, presenting majr envirnmental prblems acrss nt nly crwded areas f the
wrld, but in ceans and beaches. Multiple rganizatins have launched prjects aimed at the issue, but they face a difficult task, especially when it cmes t the larger nets.
In recent years, engineers have started adding fiber frm ld fishing nets t building
materials. This prcess helps strengthen the recycled materials fr reuse in cnstructin.Aware f the unused value, researchers decided t wrk tgether n a new way t develp mre usage frm the waste nets.
Once they remved any remaining waste material, they brke dwn the remaining
nets, typically made with plastic fibers, and mixed them int a cnnecting material. Next, they
pressed, heated, and cut their new material int small blcks. Blck 1 cntained nly fishing net fibers, while Blck 2 featured the net material and an additinal strengthening part.
During the prductin prcess, the cnnecting material inside each blck begins t melt after cming int cntact with ht cncrete. Once melted, the recycled fishing net fibers are set free int the material and strengthen it by imprving bth its flexibility and ability t resist
breaking.
Researchers then tested three cncrete mixtures cntaining 40 percent recycled building materials and varius blck ratis(比率) against a cntrl cncrete made withut recycled
materials. The team fund that every fishing net-added cncrete was strnger than traditinal cncrete. On tp f this, the cmbinatin f cnnecting materials made it easier t change the cncrete’s thickness, which culd reduce the necessary prductin temperature — further
reducing its energy requirements and pllutin utput.
The team added that future research culd fcus n better imprving hw the fiber blcks are made, r increasing strengthening part amunts t increase the cncrete’s strength. They als believe that cmbining additinal recycled materials with the nets may further imprve the
material while als making the industry even mre sustainable.
8 .What causes main envirnmental issue f fishing nets?
A .Their fire risk. B .Their bad smell.

9 .Hw d fishing net fibers imprve cncrete?
A .They can reduce cncrete’s weight.
B .They can make cncrete melt faster.
C .They can imprve cncrete’s thickness.
D .They can increase cncrete’s flexibility.
10 .What advantage des adding cnnecting material t cncrete bring?
A .Lwer prductin temperature. B .Higher strength.
C .Reduced material use. D .Faster cnstructin.
11 .What is researchers’attitude twards future studies?
A .Critical. B .Hpeful. C .Prud. D .Indifferent.

Tiny black-capped chickadees (黑顶山雀) have gd memries. They stre fd in many different lcatins in the wild, and then return t these places when ther fd surces are lw.
Sme researchers thught that neurns called “place cells” wuld explain these birds’ ability t
remember their hidden fd. These cells encde infrmatin abut where things are. But recently, a team f researchers fund that each time a black-capped chickadee hides a seed in a specific
lcatin, a unique brain pattern appears in the hippcampus (海马体) — separate frm place cells. Selmaan Chettih, a neurscientist frm Clumbia University, cmpared it t a barcde (条形码).
“The hippcampus was like a flipped switch. This new pattern f activity was different
frm the place cells,” Chettih says. T bserve this, Chettih built a special area with feeders full f sunflwer seeds in the crners. He put wden perches (栖息处) all ver the place with small
flaps where birds culd hide seeds. The scientists put tiny prbes int the chickadees’ brains and tracked activity in their memry areas. Each time a bird hid a seed under a flap, a special brain
pattern appeared, like a barcde. Each bird had its wn unique brain pattern fr each time it hid a seed.
When the birds revisited these sites and recvered the hidden seeds, the same barcde-like pattern materialized again, as thugh all the infrmatin abut each lcatin and seed was linked t a unique brain pattern.
The researchers cmpared these memries t humans’ memries f specific events r
persnal experiences. They are essential t hw humans define themselves and bind tgether
mments in time, peple, places and sensry infrmatin. But the mechanism fr hw this binding happens is still unclear.
Chettih says it’s difficult t knw exactly when an animal is frming a memry. Hwever, the fact that this seed-hiding behavir fllws a clear pattern may help scientists t understand
hw the brain makes and stres memries.
12 .What can we knw abut the chickadees frm paragraph 1?
A .They are able t find their hidden fd. B .They are gd at remembering barcdes.
C .They have better memries than humans. D .They lack the hippcampi in their brains.
