A man abut frty emerged frm the back dr, his arms piled high with
blankets and sheets. Cnsidering his business- like calm, I intrduced myself and
ventured, “If yu’re getting rid f these, might I ffer t buy them?” “Take them,” he marched past me withut lking, withut missing a beat. S I walked inside my first dustbin. There lay the quiet archaelgy f an ld wman’s life.
And smething brke pen in me — evenings at my grandmther’s returned:
the tw f us huddled tgether n the sfa, wrking needles f clred thread thrugh small clth pieces, as she taught me hw t give shape t the birds and flwers we

Nrmal cement (水泥) tends t absrb infrared radiatin (红外线) frm the sun and stre it as heat, which can increase the temperature inside cement buildings as
well as that f the surrunding air. S Fengyin Du, then at Sutheast University in
Nanjing, China, and her clleagues decided t address this by creating a new cement in which tiny reflective crystals f a mineral cllect n the surface.
The team’s cement emits infrared light frm its surface, rather than string it, and s lses heat quickly. “It wrks like a mirrr and a radiatr, s it can reflect
sunlight away and send heat ut int the sky, s a building can stay cler withut any air cnditining r electricity,” says Du.
In the labratry, the researchers first prduce tiny balls frm cmmn minerals like limestne and gypsum. These are grund t dust and mixed with water befre
being pured int a silicne muld (硅胶模具) cvered in small hles. Air bubbles
passing thrugh the hles create slight depressins in the cement’s surface, where the reflective crystals can then grw, while an aluminium-rich substance in the set cement lets infrared light pass thrugh the material.
Ecnmically, this new cement hlds an advantage, csting $5 per tnne less than nrmal cement, as Du ntes its prductin requires lwer temperatures. Du and her team tested hw their cement kept cl n a ht rf at Purdue University in
Indiana, which jintly hsted Du’s PhD prject, finding that the surface temperature was 5.4℃ lwer than the air and 26℃ lwer than the nrmal cement.
“It’s a useful material,” says Oscar Brusse at University Cllege Lndn. “Yu
increase the reflective capacity as well as increasing the emissivity, s any energy that is captured r cnducted t the material is emitted efficiently back.”
Hwever, measuring nly the surface temperature f the material desn’t tell us hw it will perfrm in the real wrld, says Brusse, s it shuld underg further
testing. “It desn’t mean that because the surface is 5℃ lwer, that the air
temperature will be 5℃ lwer arund it. The effect lcally may be greatly limited.”
8 .What des the underlined wrd “this” in Paragraph 1 refer t?
A .The rising indr temperature. B .The absrbed infrared radiatin.
C .The heat strage f nrmal cement. D .The use f reflective mineral crystals.
9 .Hw des the new cement achieve cling effect?
A .It reflects sunlight and emits heat. B .It lets cl air int minerals.
C .It lcks infrared with air bubbles. D .It creates pressure n the surface.
10 .What is the strength f the new cement?
A .Replacing air cnditining. B .Reducing air temperature.
C .Wrking best n Indiana rfs. D .Lwering prductin cst.
11 .What is Brusse’s attitude twards the new cement?
A .Objective. B .Indifferent. C .Pessimistic. D .Disapprving.

The bald eagle, America’s natinal symbl f strength and freedm, has made an inspiring cmeback frm near extinctin. Once endangered due t harmful
pesticides and habitat lss, these great birds nw fly acrss skies they nearly
disappeared frm decades ag. Their stry is ne f envirnmental recvery and cultural pride.
In the mid-20th century, the widespread use f the insecticide DDT caused
eagle ppulatins t drp sharply. The chemical weakened eggshells, making it nearly impssible fr chicks t survive. By the 1980s, states like New Jersey had nly ne
nesting (筑巢的) pair left.
But after DDT was prhibited in 1972, cnservatin (保护) effrts began. Scientists transprted eagles frm stable ppulatins in Canada and used creative
methds, like replacing real eggs with fake nes, t prtect chicks. These effrts paid ff: New Jersey nw has ver 300 nesting pairs, and the species was remved frm the US endangered list in 2007.
“They’re a cnservatin success stry,” says Maia Edwards fthe American
Bald Eagle Fundatin. Eagles have prven adaptable, nesting even in busy areas like suburban neighbrhds. Kathy Clark, a wildlife expert in New Jersey, recalls yung eagles surviving in a crwded twn near New Yrk. “They’re tugh — like true
Jersey birds,” she says with a sense f wnder.
Hwever, challenges remain. Crashes with cars, habitat lss and diseases like bird flu threaten their recvery. Zs and rescue centers, such as New Jersey’s Turtle Back Z, care fr injured birds that can’t return t the wild. Cnservatinists stress the need fr clean waterways and prtected spaces t ensure eagles grw well.
Culturally, the bald eagle’s cmeback has wn hearts. Recent laws fficially declared it America’s natinal bird, thugh many assumed it already was. Native
American cmmunities, wh view eagles as spiritual symbls, supprted the mve. The birds als inspire sprts fans — like the Philadelphia Eagles ftball team
cmpeting in this year’s Super Bwl.
Fr average Americans, sptting a bald eagle remains amazing. Birdwatcher
Dan Day, wh grew up rarely seeing them, nw encunters eagles regularly. “It
brightens up yur whle day,” he says. Experts remind peple t admire eagles frm a distance, as trubling them harms their recvery.
12 .What is the third paragraph mainly abut?
A .The histry f the bald eagle. B .The success f cnservatin effrts.
C .The current situatin f bald eagles. D .The challenges faced by bald eagles.
13.Hw des Kathy Clark feel abut bald eagles living in crwded New Jersey twns?
A .She is surprised by their ability t adapt.
B .She wrries they will truble human life.
C .She thinks they are a danger t lcal pets.
D .She believes they belng nly in distant areas.
14 .Why des the authr mentin the Philadelphia Eagles ftball team?

B .T cmpare sprts strategies with cnservatin.
C .T questin the destructive business f wildlife.

15 .What can be learned abut bald eagles?
