I’ll be hnest: I’m nt a science guy. Physics, fr me, was mstly a fg f equatins (方程式). I tried t survive in schl. But while reading Life 3.0 by Max Tegmark, I came acrss Fermat’s Principle—and it felt less like physics and mre like a life lessn in disguise (伪装).
Tegmark explains it with a brilliant example. Imagine a lifeguard n a beach sptting a swimmer in truble. She desn’t take the straight line. Why? Because she runs faster n sand than she swims in water. S she runs farther dwn the beach first—cvering mre grund where she’s fast—then dives int the water at an angle. That bent, tw-part path is the fastest. Light des the same: bending as it enters water, fllwing the path f least time, nt least distance.
This is where it clicked. Tegmark writes that the universe ften behaves as if it’s ptimizing smething—minimizing energy, maximizing efficiency. It felt purpseful. Even if nature has n “gal”, its behaviur is gal-riented.
It made me lk at my wn life. Hw ften d I pursue the path that lks shrtest, nly t find it’s the mst demanding? I used t prmise myself that I wuld read an hur daily, which seemed t be the “straight-line” way. But I burned ut by day three. The “Fermat” way is different: start small, reduce resistance, bend yur path t match the envirnment where yur prgress flws faster. Yu might run farther n sand befre diving in, but yu’ ll reach yur destinatin sner.
The same applies t change. Whenever we try t change smething, we ften frce urselves: quit cld turkey, transfrm vernight, fix everything at nce. But real change, like light, wrks better when it bends—when it adapts t the medium it mves thrugh. Bending differently at wrk, at hme is nt weakness but wisdm.
Maybe the key t imprving ur lives bit by bit isn’t abut mre frce r straight-line speed. Maybe it’s abut paying attentin t the medium we’re mving thrugh—ur time, md, health, energy—and adjusting ur angle. Because, as nature shws us, the ideal path is rarely the straight ne.
      24. What did the authr think f physics initially?
      A. It required genuine curisity. B. It prvided intellectual rewards.
      C. It psed academic challenges. D. It cntained philsphical insights.
      25. What des the lifeguard stry in paragraph 2 mainly explain?

      D. The difference between jgging and swimming.
      26. What sets the “Fermat” way apart frm the authr’s prir way?
      A. Allwing minute changes. B. Highlighting direct methds.
      C. Demanding strng willpwer. D. Advcating instant prgress.
      27. Which f the fllwing des the authr mst prbably agree with?

If yu readjust ne bk in 2025, yu belng t an endangered species. Accrding t a recent survey, fewer than half f Americans had read a single bk in the past year. As the ppulatin f readers declines, educatrs have been wrrying abut this trend. Nw, sme try a new methd: persuading peple t read t save their cmmunity spirit. They argue that reflective reading helps citizens handle cmplexity and recver attentin.
The prblem with these arguments is that they misunderstand why peple becme readers. Telling smene t lve literature because it is gd fr sciety is like telling smene t believe in Gd because religin is gd fr scial stability. It is a practical argument fr smething that shuld be a persnal passin. Instead f describing reading as a public duty, it shuld be seen as a private pleasure—even a “vice” .
Histrically, when literature was cnsidered dangerus r “bad”, mralists culd nt stp peple frm buying bks. Nw, when bks are seen as virtuus and educatinal, thse same mralists cannt persuade anyne t pick ne up. By making reading a “must-d” task fr self- imprvement, we have taken away its primary attractin: the thrill f ding smething fr its wn sake, rather than fr its usefulness.
In fact, becming a reader means cultivating a relatinship with the wrld that seems cunterprductive. Reading is “unprfitable” ; it des nt teach transferable skills r prvide netwrking pprtunities. It is, in a sense, an anti-scial activity. Yu turn yur back n the real wrld t enter an imaginary ne. Yet, it is precisely this “uselessness” that makes reading pwerful. It ffers an inner freedm that cannt be measured by scial value. If we want t save reading, we shuld stp praising its benefits and start celebrating its delightful wrthlessness.
      28. What is the educatrs ’ real purpse in using the new methd?
      A. T strengthen scial stability. B. T fulfill certain scial duties.
      C. T handle cmplex prblems. D. T stp the decline in reading.
      29. What des the authr think f the “practical argument”?
      A. It is quite cnvincing. B. It is mrally wrng.
      C. It is practically ineffective. D. It is scially respnsible.
      30. What can we infer abut reading frm the last paragraph?
      A. It helps readers avid scial duties.
      B. It functins as a tl fr scializatin.
      C. Its pwer cmes frm its lack f prfit.
      D. Its value lies in creating a better wrld.
      31. What is the best title fr the text?
      A. The Benefit f Scial Reading B. Reading: A Duty r a “Vice”?
      C. Hw t Build Inner Freedm D. The Decline f American Literature
      D
Majr bitech cmpanies that prduce a lt f made-t-rder DNA fr scientists have prtectins in place t keep dangerus bilgical material ut f the hands f wuld-be harmful peple.
But nw, a new study has demnstrated hw AI culd be used t easily get arund thse bisafety prcesses. A team f AI researchers fund that prtein-design tls culd be used t “paraphrase” the DNA cdes f txic (有毒的) prteins. “Re-writing them in ways that culd preserve their structure, and ptentially their functin,” says Eric Hrvitz, Micrsft’s chief scientific fficer.
Cmputer scientists used AI t generate DNA cdes fr mre than 75,000 variants (变体) f dangerus prteins and firewalls used by DNA makers weren’t cnsistently able t catch them. “T ur cncern,” says Hrvitz, “they slipped past the bisecurity screening systems used wrldwide by DNA cmpanies t flag dangerus rders.” A fix was quickly written and applied t the bisecurity screening sftware. But it’s nt perfect—it still culdn’t ascertain sme variants.
“AI-pwered prtein design is ne f science’s mst exciting frntiers. We’re seeing advances in medicine and public health,” says HIrvitz. “Yet like many pwerful technlgies, these tls can be misused.” Bilgists have debated whether t penly publish certain experimental results, thugh pen discussins are science’s lifebld. The researchers and the jurnal behind this study held back sme infrmatin and will restrict access t their data and sftware. They enlisted a nn-prfit third party t decide wh has a reasnable need t knw.
“This is the first time such a mdel has been emplyed t manage risks f sharing dangerus infrmatin in a scientific publicatin,” says Hrvitz. Scientists, wrried abut future bisecurity threats, praised this wrk. “My verall reactin t that was favrable,” says scientist Artur Casadevall. “Here we have a system in which we are identifying weak pints. And what yu’re seeing is an attempt t crrect knwn weak pints. But what are the weak pints that we dn’t knw abut and that will require future crrectins?” says Casadevall.
      32. Hw des AI challenge the existing bisecurity defenses?
      A. By mnitring the screening systems.
      B. By inventing new prtein-design tls.
      C. By imprving the firewalls ’ cnsistency.
      D. By changing pisnus prtein DNA cdes.
      33. What des the underlined wrd “ascertain” in Paragraph 3 mean?
      A. Prtect. B. Delete. C. Prduce. D. Detect.
      34. What is the scientists’pineering attempt in bisafety?
      A. They supprted pen publicatin fully.
      B. They cntrlled key infrmatin access.
      C. They allwed relevant pen discussins.
      D. They invested heavily in medicine and health.
      35. What is Casadevall’s attitude t future bisafety?
      A. Unclear. B. Cnfident. C. Cncerned. D. Dismissive.

Write a script. If yu’re nt used t saying n, yu can write dwn what yu’re ging t say befrehand and practice it. 37 Yu can simply say yu’re nt available at that time, fllwed by “Thanks fr asking, and I hpe t have mre capacity next time” .
38 When faced with a new wrk request, take five minutes t assess yur wrklad, energy level and pririties befre respnding. Pay attentin t the activities and interactins that leave yu feeling drained r verwhelmed. Put thse kinds f events n a “N List” . The list desn’t mean yu decline every time yu’re asked, but dn’t say yes right away.
Harness(驾驭) technlgy. Mbile devices make it easier t wrk frm anywhere, and harder t draw bundaries. 39 Fr example, if yu check emails far t frequently, mve the email app frm yur phne’s hmepage t the secnd page.
Setting bundaries isn’t abut shutting peple ut. 40 Creating healthy limits prtects yur energy, priritizes yur happiness, and builds strnger relatinships. The mre yu practice, the easier it becmes. Yur time and well-being are wrth prtecting, s start setting bundaries that help yu live n yur terms.

But smething trubled him. Years f living in the small twn had cnvinced him that it was a dull place. “There’s nthing special abut it—nly rdinary farms, animals, and trees!” he frwned. “What will I draw?”
Just then, Briana Williams, a new girl in his class wh had just mved frm Hustn, a large mdern city in Texas, walked ut. Sptting Nate, she sat dwn beside him and nticed the flyer. “A drawing cntest? That sunds fun!”
“Nt really,” Nate sighed. “Trust me, this twn is a big bre.”
