It was my first cnference as a PhD candidate, and the atmsphere shuld have thrilled me. It was a chance t shwcase my wrk and build cnnectins. Yet I fund myself hanging by the cffee statin, rehearsing ptential cnversatins in my head but never mving beynd a smile. I wanted t cnnect but feared seeming awkward, r, wrse, irrelevant. By the end f the day, my business cards were still in my pcket, untuched. I was relieved it was ver — and regretted that I had missed yet anther pprtunity t build relatinships that culd enrich my research and
      persnal grwth.
When I started my PhD and saw researchers engaged in multiple cllabratins and
publishing frequently, I realized that purpseful and meaningful netwrking had helped their
accmplishments. If I wanted t succeed in academia, I wuld need t actively develp
netwrking habits. It wasn’t easy. I went int that cnference with the best f intentins, and still
came up empty. My lab mate, n the ther hand, walked away with an invitatin frm a
well-knwn research team t c-authr a wrking paper, simply by starting up a casual chat. I std there, right beside her — and yet, I let the mment slip by.
That’s when it hit me: Netwrking wasn’t abut impressing everyne in the rm. It was abut speaking up and finding value in even the smallest exchanges. I’d been waiting fr the
perfect wrds, the ideal pening, the “right” mment — but I realized thse mments rarely
arrived n their wn. The crucial pint was t let g f perfectin and instead seek cnnectin.
I dve in. I tk every pprtunity t attend events. My palms wuld sweat and I’d lse my train f thught. My vice wuld ccasinally tremble. But I kept shwing up, determined t push thrugh, hping eventually it wuld start t feel natural. And it did.
Lking back, I see that the real challenge wasn’t the act f netwrking itself, but letting g f the fear f nt ding it “right”. By shifting my mindset frm perfectin t cnnectin, I’ve
      begun t enjy the prcess.
4 .Hw did the authr feel at her first cnference as a PhD candidate?
A .Excited and cnfident. B .Prud and satisfied.
C .Relaxed and enthusiastic. D .Nervus and hesitant.

      B .T highlight the imprtance f netwrking.
C .T shw the rle flabs in academic success.
D .T demnstrate where t find a famus research team.
6 .Hw did the authr make prgress in netwrking?
A .By rganising as many events as pssible.
B .By asking fr suggestins frm her lab mate.
C .By preparing perfect wrds and the ideal pening.
D .By abandning perfectinism and seeking cnnectin.
7 .What can we learn frm the authr’s experience?
A .Netwrking is easy fr PhD candidates.
B .Anyne can learn t enjy netwrking.
C .Netwrking begins with impressing thers.
D .Chsing a team matters a lt in academia.
      C
Fr many, sitting n the cuch with ppcrn and a mvie means shutting yur brain ff t relax. But surprisingly, tw dzen brain netwrks are lighting up as yu watch different types f mvies, a new study finds. A research paper published in Nvember in the jurnal Neurn shws that ur brains are actually incredibly active when we watch mvies. Researchers at MIT tk
advantage f this t create the mst accurate functinal brain map t date.
The researchers used a functinal MRI (fMRI) dataset frm the Human Cnnectme
Prject, which cnsisted f brain scans frm 176 yung adults wh watched 60 minutes f shrt
mvie clips (片段). An fMRI scan indirectly measures brain activity by tracking where bld
flws t different regins f the brain. If a part f the brain is active, bld flw t that part
increases. After the tracking, they were able t identify different brain netwrks needed t prcess different types f scenes.
Overall, 24 different brain netwrks were activated during mvie watching. The researchers culd then assign functins t each netwrk by assciating them with specific cgnitive prcesses,
such as recgnizing human faces, watching peple interact with ne anther, and bserving familiar settings.
Frm this map, the researchers discvered a relatinship between “executive cntrl areas”
      — parts f the brain invlved in planning and decisin-making — and parts f the brain with ther functins. When a mvie scene was cmplex and difficult t fllw, the executive cntrl areas
were highly active. Hwever, when a scene was relatively simple, mre specialized brain regins including thse invlved in language prcessing dminated.
Such a detailed functinal map f the brain culd prvide insights int hw the rgan’s
netwrks are rganised in bth healthy peple and thse with cnditins, which is gd news fr dctrs. And in thery, understanding hw the brain respnds t mvies culd even help
      filmmakers create mre engaging cntent.
8 .What is the achievement f the researchers at MIT?
A .Innvating ways t relax ur brains.
B .Publishing a paper abut brains in December.
C .Discvering the advantages f watching films.
D .Mapping active areas in brains related t mvie scenes.
9 .What happened t the viewers watching cmplicated scenes?
A .They tk an interest in the language in them.
B .Their executive cntrl areas gt activated.
C .They tended t shift t anther mvie.
      D .Their relatinship became tense.
10 .What is the purpse f the last paragraph?
      A .T attract test participants.
      B .T advcate further studies.
      C .T ffer filmmakers suggestins.
D .T emphasize the value f the map.
11 .Which f the fllwing can be the best title fr the text?
A .Brains get started when yu watch mvies
B .New brain scanning technlgy arrives
C .Tips fr finding yur favurite mvies
D .Ways t shut ff yur brain and relax
      D
The ld saying ges that if yu give an infinite (无限的) number f mnkeys an infinite amunt f time t hit randm keys n a typewriter, ne f them will eventually type ut the
cmplete wrks f William Shakespeare, which is knwn as the Infinite Mnkey Therem.
Hwever, accrding t a new paper in the jurnal Franklin Open, there is nt enugh time left in the universe’s entire lifespan fr all the chimps alive tday t write ut the wrks f the
pet. “The lng-established result f the Infinite Mnkey Therem is crrect, but misleading,” the University f Technlgy Sydney researchers wrte in the paper. “Meaningful text generatin
during the lifespan f ur universe is almst infeasible.”
The “heat death” thery suggests the universe will end ver 100,000 billin years as it
expands and energy equally spreads, leaving n usable energy. Currently at 13.8 billin years ld, we have a vast time ahead. Yet, even this may nt be enugh fr randm mnkeys t cpy
Shakespeare’s wrks, accrding t new research.
In the study, the researchers calculated hw likely it wuld be fr a given string f
characters t be typed by ne f a finite number f mnkeys. They assumed that the keybard
cntained 30 keys f English characters and punctuatin marks, a finite number f 200,000
mnkeys — based n the current ppulatin f chimpanzee — and a typing rate f ne key per mnkey per secnd fr the rest fthe universe’s lifetime. They discvered that, using these
assumptins, it is extremely unlikely that all wrds f Shakespeare’s wrks will be typed befre the heat death f the universe. In fact, there is nly a 5 percent chance that ne f the mnkeys wuld even get arund t typing the single wrd “bananas” within its wn lifetime.
“This finding places the therem amng ther prbability puzzles and paradxes (悖论) — such as the St Petersburg paradx, Zen’s paradx, and the Rss-Littlewd paradx — where
using the idea f infinite resurces gives the results that dn’t match up with what we get when we cnsider the limitatin f ur universe,” said Wdcck, a prfessr at the University f
      Technlgy Sydney.
12 .What is the Infinite Mnkey Therem abut?
      A .A cultural trend. B .A prbability principle.
      C .A literature assumptin. D .A psychlgy phenmenn.
13 .What des the underlined wrd “infeasible” in paragraph 2 prbably mean?
      A .Impssible. B .Deep-rted. C .Valueless. D .Far-reaching.
14 .What is the basis f the research?
      A .Pwer f randmness.
      B .Infinite resurces and time.
C .Realistic estimates f time and resurces.
D .Faith in Shakespeare’s wrks’ cmplexity.
15 .What is Wdcck’s attitude tward the finding f the study?
      A .Dubtful. B .Dismissive. C .Ambiguus. D .Psitive.

Students can try different trades, like the electrical ne, and mve directly frm the prgram t an apprenticeship (学徒工作).
Artificial intelligence (AI) is anther ht field. Twenty years ag, there were few
pprtunities t explre a career in artificial intelligence. 19 Between 2015 and 2019,
there was a 270 per cent increase in the number f businesses implementing AI prcesses
wrldwide. The technlgy’s capabilities are wide-ranging. It can help teachers streamline their wrk by updating curses, recmmending cntent and suggesting ways t bridge knwledge gaps fr students. In the business wrld, AI has transfrmed supply chain management.
20 Just a few years ag, imagining e-sprts (r electrnic sprts) as a prper
cllege prgram was almst unthinkable. Vide games were seen as a vice, nt a jb. Fast frward
t 2025: Quite a few clleges have nt nly launched e-sprts management prgrams but even
built e-sprts arenas t take advantage f the lively industry. Glbally, the vide game industry is bigger than the mvie and music industries cmbined. Revenue frm e-sprts events is predicted t grw t mre than $1.8 billin glbally by 2026.
A .Others are ffering free explratin prgrams.
B .Building almst any hme requires an electrician.
C .Hwever, the technlgy has quickly advanced in the last decade.
