      Help students learn abut the use f ellipsis thrugh inductin and apply it t their writing.

      Students are nt familiar with the rule f ellipsis and hw t apply it apprpriately.
      教学过程
      Unit 3 Diverse Cultures
      Discvering Useful Structure
      Lead in
      Share a free talk between Bella and Bunny and ask students t cmpare the cmplete versin and elliptical ne f sme sentences in the talk.
      (Students will be expsed t the practical use f ellipsis, preliminarily understanding the benefits f applying it.)
      T intrduce
      Intrduce the definitin f elliptical sentence t students:
      An elliptical sentence is a sentence where ne r mre wrds are mitted because they are implied by cntext, but the sentence remains grammatically crrect. Elliptical sentences make speech and writing mre cncise and natural, aviding redundancy.
      (Students will knw the definitin and functin f ellipsis and sme benefits f using it.)
      T identify and explre
      Elliptical sentences can be fund in different sentence structures, like simple sentences, cmpund sentences, and cmplex sentences.
      Part 1: Ellipsis in simple sentences
      Samples:
      I can’t wait! (Subject can be mitted.)
      Is anybdy here? (Predicate can be mitted.)
      — D yu knw ur prfessr’s name?
      — N, I dn’t knw ur prfessr’s name. (Object can be mitted.)
      What a city it is! (Subject and predicate can be mitted.)
      —Des she insist n buying that red dress?
      — I ask her nt t buy that read dress. (Object and cmplement can be mitted.)
      —D yu want t g t the cinema with us?
      — I’d like t g t the cinema with yu, but I’m busy. (Object can be mitted.)
      With these sample sentences, we can cnclude tw tips:
      1.The infinitive phrase fllwing verbs like “advise, ask, rder, tell” can be mitted if it has been previusly mentined.
      2. The infinitive phrase fllwing verbs like “expect, hpe, plan, refuse, intend, wuld like, wish, lve” can be mitted if it has been previusly mentined.
      (Students will knw in simple sentences, subjects, predicate verbs, bjects and bject cmplements usually can be mitted as lng as the sentence meaning is clear. )
      Part 2: Ellipsis in cmpund sentences
      Samples:
      She didn’t buy the expensive dress, but (she) pted fr the mre practical and affrdable ne.
      Bunny has finished her hmewrk, but Bella hasn’t (finished her hmewrk).
      He tried t persuade his desk mate t enter the cmpetitin, but (he tried) in vain.
      With these sample sentences, we can cnclude the fllwing tip:
      In the cmpund sentences, the same parts in the latter sentence as the frmer can be mitted.
      (Students will knw in cmpund sentences, repeated parts can usually be mitted in the latter sentences. )
      Step 3: Ellipsis in cmplex sentences
      Samples:
      They will g t Lndn, but I dn’t knw when (they will g t Lndn).
      She intends t learn French but she desn’t knw hw (she can learn it well).
      With these tw sample sentences, we can cnclude the fllwing tip:
      In bject clauses intrduced by “when, where, hw, why”, it is cmmn t mit the repeated part that is the same as in the main clause, leaving nly a single relative adverb.
      Samples:
      When (I am) in truble, I always turn t my teacher fr help.
      The sprts meeting this year is mre successful than (it was) expected.
      With these sample sentences, we can cnclude the fllwing tip:
      In adverbial clauses intrduced by “when, if, as thugh, until, unless”, the subject and the linking verb in the subrdinate clause can ften be mitted when the tw clauses share the same subject.
      (Students will get the hang f the rules f ellipsis in different bject and adverbial clauses.)
      T cnclude
      In simple sentences, parts can be mitted when the meaning is clear.
      In cmpund sentences, the repeated parts can be mitted in the latter nes.
      In cmplex sentences, the repeated parts can be mitted in bject clauses; and in adverbial clauses, the subject and the linking verb in the subrdinate clause can ften be mitted when the tw clauses share the same subject.
      (Students will figure ut the use f ellipsis in different types f sentences and well prepare fr its applicatin.)
      T practice
      Underline the parts where ellipsis is used and figure ut mitted parts.

      B. Rewrite the fllwing sentences using ellipsis.
      4.Thugh I was tired, I went n explring the island.
      5.Yu are unhappy. Can yu tell me why yu are unhappy?
      6.Tm may leave if he wishes t leave.
      C. Revise a text using ellipsis when pssible.
      Tday, I visited Huanggushu Waterfall, which is a true marvel f nature. The mment I arrived, the thunderus rar f the water immediately captured my attentin. What a sight it was! The mist envelped me, making me feel bth refreshed and invigrated.
      When I walked alng the trails, I fund that each viewpint ffered a different perspective, each ne shwing the waterfall’s majestic beauty in a unique way. I culd feel the pwer f the water as it crashed dwn, a reminder f nature’s immense frce. Birdsng filled the air, blending harmniusly with the sund f the waterfall. What a perfect harmny it created! I als explred the nearby caves, where the stunning rck frmatins left me in awe.
      Fr lunch, I savred the lcal dishes—spicy grilled fish and sticky rice that was wrapped in bamb. They were s delicius!
      Thugh I was tired frm the lng walks, I fund the trip bth exhilarating and peaceful. I felt a deep cnnectin t nature, and I left with unfrgettable memries f this breathtaking place. Huanggushu Waterfall truly left me speechless with its grandeur. I’m lking frward t my next hliday here. I can’t wait t return!
      (Students can practice and slidify their knwledge f the rules f elliptical sentences. )
      Assignments:
      1. T cmplete the activity 4 in the wrkbk (p75) and appreciate the use f ellipsis;
      2. T write a travel jurnal abut yur Natinal Day hliday. It shuld include:
      a. sight, activities, and yur feelings r thughts.
      b. apprpriate elliptical sentences.
      (Students will have mre understanding abut the use f elliptical sentences and can apply them t their wn cmpsitins apprpriately. )
