His multicultural backgrund — cmbining Dutch, British, and Cratian influences — expsed him t different ways f thinking frm a yung age, shaping a wide wrldview that fcused n prblem-slving and glbal awareness. During his teenage years, this fundatin began t cnnect with his interests in ceanic envirnments, giving him the key insight that large-scale technlgical slutins might be pssible.
While n vacatin in Greece at 16 years ld, Byan went scuba diving and saw mre plastic bags than fish in the sea, which left him thinking, “Why can’t we just clean this up?” He started lking further int the prblem, cnsidered pssible technlgical slutins t cean plastic pllutin, and wrked hard t btain practical knwledge thrugh a schl prject that helped develp his ideas. In late 2012, he presented these ideas at a TEDx cnference.
At first, armed with nly €300 f saved pcket mney, he struggled t make prgress. Hwever, everything changed in February 2013 when his TEDx vide suddenly became ppular nline, and the attentin that fllwed allwed Byan t fund The Ocean Cleanup. Byan then gathered a team f vlunteers and launched a crwdfunding campaign, which funded a year-lng feasibility study (可行性研究) — the first real step in bringing Byan’s technlgical slutins t life. That is hw Byan turned his dream int reality.
Tday, The Ocean Cleanup is actively cleaning up the Great Pacific Garbage Patch and has been using interceptrs (拦截器) in sme f the wrld’s mst plluted rivers t prevent plastic frm reaching the cean in the first place.

A few glasses f alchl are enugh t lead t mre lcalized infrmatin prcessing and reduced brain-wide cmmunicatin, a new study has discvered.
The researchers behind the study believe that their findings culd g sme way t explaining why different peple can feel different levels f drunkenness at the same breath-alchl level.
The researchers recruited 107 healthy participants. They were given a drink designed t raise their bld-alchl level t the US limit fr driving. Half an hur after drinking, the participants went int an MRI scanner, where their brain activity was mapped. Using a variety f mathematical appraches, the researchers calculated cmmunicatins between 106 different brain regins.
Overall, brain areas became less well cnnected t the rest f the brain. Althugh the vlunteers were all abut as drunk as each ther, sme felt mre drunk than thers. The researchers fund that this feeling f drunkenness was related t hw discnnected their brain regins had becme.
What’s mre, the netwrk changes g sme way t explaining hw t much alchl can start t cause blurred visin, difficulty walking in a straight line.
The parietal lbe (脑叶), respnsible fr spatial awareness, had n significant changes at all. The frntal lbe, which is linked t decisin-making, and the tempral lbe, which handles memry prcessing, shwed minr changes in activity. One f the regins mst affected by the decreased glbal cnnectivity was the ccipital lbe. It’s here that the brain prcesses visual data fed in by ur eyes, and these changes likely mean this data is less readily available t the rest f the brain.
“Our results that infrmatin transfer becmes mre islated and less integrated are cnsistent with alchl’s knwn influence,” write the researchers. Hwever, the researchers say future wrk shuld include brader grups f participants and lk mre directly at the effects f brain netwrk disruptin n peple wh are less physically and mentally healthy than the participants in this study.
8. What made peple feel differently drunk at the same breath-alchl level?
A. The type f alchl.
B. The level f bld alchl.
C. The prcessing f visual infrmatin.
D. The degree f reduced brain-wide cmmunicatin.
9. Which brain area is mst impacted by alchl-related reduced cnnectivity?
A. The frntal lbe.B. The tempral lbe.
C. The parietal lbe.D. The ccipital lbe.
10. What shuld be imprved fr future studies accrding t the researchers?
A. The sample.B. The mdel.
C. The measurement tls.D. The research methds.
11. What is the main idea f the passage?
A. Alchl harms visual functin.B. Alchl weakens brain integratin.
C. Alchl influences certain brain areas.D. Alchl imprves lcal brain activities.

The hardest-t-find planetary aurra (极光) in the Slar System has finally been revealed in all its gently glwing glry. It’s the first time an aurra has been imaged n the Slar System’s utermst knwn planet, thanks t the sensitivity f JWST’s pwerful detectr. Interestingly, Neptune’s magnetic field is unusual. Its aurras appear near the equatr rather than the ples, unlike Earth’s.
JWST measurements f the temperature f the distant ice giant revealed why we’ve had such a hard time detecting Neptune’s aurras. The planet’s temperature has drpped significantly since 1989 accrding t JWST measurements. Clder temperatures mean fainter aurras. Previus predictins abut Neptune’s pssible aurras were based n inaccurate temperatures, s scientists had been lking fr the wrng thing.
In 2023, a space telescpe accurately measured Neptune’s atmsphere and fund the H₃⁺ in, which is linked t aurras. By tracking the cncentratin f H₃⁺ acrss the skies f Neptune, a team f astrnmers led by Henrik Melin f Nrthumbria University in the UK was able t map the lcatin f the planet’s aurras.
At last, the set is cmplete. Aurras have been seen n every single planet in the Slar System, revealing that the phenmenn is nt just prevalent, but a feature f the interactin between planets and the Sun.
This discvery gives us a new tl t interpret, nt just the variety that can be exhibited by a single phenmenn acrss very different wrlds here in the Slar System, but als n ther wrlds rbiting alien stars.
“Since the mst cmmnly detected type f extraslar planet is Neptune-sized, and as Neptune lacks the extreme seasns f Uranus,” said Dr Emma Carter. “These bservatins help explre atmsphere-magnetsphere interactins n the mst cmmn-sized wrlds in ur galaxy.”
12. Where d Neptune’s aurras mainly frm?
A. Near the ples.B. Near the equatr.
C. Near the ice giant.D. Near the magnetic field.
13. Why were Neptune’s aurras hard t find?
A. The planet became cler.
B. Scientists used wrng tls.
C. Scientists culdn’t lcate Neptune’s psitin.
D. The cncentratin f H₃⁺ n the planet is t high.
14. Which f the fllwing can replace the underlined wrd “prevalent” in Paragraph 4?
A. Persistent.B. Unique.C. Cmmn.D. Fascinating.
15. What did Dr Emma Carter think f the discvery?
A. Cnvincing.B. Limited.C. Enlightening.D. Valueless.

Sfia had grwn up arund hrses. Her father, a respected Gauch trainer, taught her t ride befre she culd walk. By age sixteen, she culd tame (驯化) any hrse n the farm. But there was ne hrse she culd never quite reach. Her name was Ventana, a beautiful hrse with a cat as dark as a mnless night. She had been rescued frm an wner wh had treated her cruelly, and the prf f her suffering was written in every line f her bdy. Ventana kept everyne at a distance. Whenever a human appeared with a saddle (马鞍), she wuld run — fleeing t the farthest crner f the field, her whle bdy trembling as if the past still chased her. The ther trainers had given up n her.
“Why keep her?” Sfia asked her father ne afternn, frustrated after anther failed attempt. “She’s dangerus. She’ll never be a riding hrse.” Her father, ld Prates, lked at her with calm eyes. “A hrse is nt a machine t be fixed, Sfia. She is a living being with a brken heart. The questin is nt whether she can be ridden, but whether yu can earn her trust. And that takes time — just being there, day after day, until she’s ready.”
Sfia didn’t understand. She had always measured her success by hw quickly she culd tame a hrse — by hw sn she culd ride. But Ventana refused t play that game. Every time Sfia entered her stall (马厩) with a saddle, the hrse wuld back int the crner, eyes wide with fear. Ventana remained unreachable, and Sfia’s cnfidence began t crack.
