My undergraduate student needed advice after yet anther failed experiment. Sitting acrss
frm me, she lked exhausted — frustrated even. I heard myself say, “This is part f research. Yu just have t push thrugh.” But even as the wrds left my muth, I felt uneasy. She ndded silently and shifted her psture. Afterward, she began shwing up less frequently and eventually stpped cming altgether. I tried t explain it away: undergraduates smetimes get busy with
cursewrk, lse interest r change directin, but deep dwn, I wndered what I culd have dne differently.
I became a mentr (导师) during my secnd year f Ph. D. but didn’t get much guidance n hw t d it. I learned nly by ding. There were mments I felt prud f. One student started ut quiet and unsure, but ver time grew int a mst independent and cnfident yung researcher.
Befre graduating, she tld me, “Yu are the reasn I stuck with this.” That mment stayed with me. But s did the ther ne — the silence, the absences, the slw fade-ut. Had I failed her?
It wasn’t until the final year f my Ph. D. that I came acrss a leaflet fr a mentrship
training wrkshp. Skeptical at first, I decided t try it. The prgram, called Entering Mentring, brught tgether graduate students fr weekly discussins. Fr the first time, I had the space t
explre the invisible labr and emtinal cmplexity f mentring. One sessin asked us t reflect n ur wn practices. I began t realize what might have been missing in my relatinship with the student wh had drifted away. I had never invited her t share her gals r cncerns. I culd have been mre attentive t her unspken struggles.
After the wrkshp, I began changing hw I interacted with students. I nw start by asking hw they’re ding, nt just experimental details. This shift has led t mre hnest cnversatins. I’ve learned that gd mentrs are built thrugh reflectin and training. I wish I’d attended that
wrkshp earlier, but I’m grateful I did at all.
4 .What primarily caused the student’s withdrawal accrding t paragraph 1?

When we think abut lives filled with meaning, we ften fcus n peple whse grand cntributins benefited humanity. Abraham Lincln, Martin Luther King and Nelsn Mandela surely felt they had a wrthwhile life. But hw abut us rdinary peple, struggling in a typical existence?
There is an imprtant element t cnsider. Think abut the first butterfly yu stp t admire after a lng winter r imagine the scenery at the tp f a hill after a fresh hike. Smetimes
existence delivers us small mments f beauty. When peple are pen t appreciating such
experiences, these mments may enhance hw they view their life. This element is defined as EA (experiential appreciatin) by Jshua Hicks, a psychlgical prfessr at Texas A & M
      University.
Recently, he and his research team set ut t figure ut whether EA was related t a
persn’s sense f meaning in a series f studies that invlved mre than 3,000 participants. At an initial test, researchers had participants rate their agreement f different cping strategies t
relieve their stress. They fund peple wh managed stress by fcusing n their appreciatin fr life’s beauty als reprted experiencing life as highly meaningful.
Researchers then cnducted a series f experiments, in which they gave participants
specific tasks and, nce mre, asked them t reprt hw strngly they identified with statements linked t purpse, etc. In ne case, participants wh watched an awe-inspiring vide reprted
having a greater sense f EA and meaning in life, cmpared with thse watched mre neutral
vides. After reflecting n the results cllected frm the participants, researchers cnfirmed their
      riginal thery.
But applying that insight can be difficult. Our mdern, fast-paced lifestyles fill the day with targets and gals. We are n the g, and we attempt t maximize utput bth at wrk and at
      leisure.
This fcus n future utcmes makes it all t easy t miss what is happening right nw. Yet life happens in the present mment. We shuld slw dwn, let life surprise us and embrace the significance in the everyday life.
8 .Why are the butterfly and the scenery n a hill mentined in paragraph 2?
      A .T deliver mments f beauty. B .T explain persnal experiences.
C .T present the cncept f EA. D .T shw the necessity f prtecting nature.
9 .Hw did the researchers cnduct the study?
A .By studying previus research data.
B .By analyzing the respnse frm the participants.
C .By shting vides starring the participants.
D .By designing different strategies t reduce stress.
10 .Wh tends t find life mre meaningful accrding t the text?
A .A persn wh always gets her life well-rganized.
      B .A persn wh leads a fast-paced life.
C .A persn wh ften hears mtivating speeches.
D .A persn wh always expects future results.
11 .What life philsphy des the authr shw in the last paragraph?
      A .N pains, n gains.
B .Live yur life ne day at a time.
C .Being n sea, sail; being n land, settle.
D .Thse wh believe in their ability can d anything.
      D
Mst peple in the Netherlands are cnvinced that their cnsumptin patterns affect the
envirnment. Many f them are lking fr ways t reduce their ftprint. Hwever, the reality is mre cmplicated, accrding t a research by Leiden PhD candidate Levn Amatuni, wh studied
car sharing and the reuse f phnes. He used his backgrund in cmputer science and mathematics t mdel and measure the benefits f such practices.
His research shws users f car-sharing platfrms reduce their impact by nly 3 t 18 percent — much less than 51 r 37 percent claimed in previus research. This is caused by
s-called “rebund effects”, which are rarely accunted fr by cmpanies r even researchers.
Fr example, shared vehicles are replaced with new mdels mre frequently than private
cars. Additinally, the intrductin f sharing schemes (方案) can encurage peple t drive when they wuld have therwise taken public transprt. These rebund effects turn ut t be highly
influential. Amatuni als fund users f sharing platfrms dn’t significantly reduce their driving. “And if they d, they ften take buses and trains, which aren’t emissin - free,” he says. While
public transprt is usually a better ptin, its impact is nt negligible. S, this data must be included t make an accurate assessment.
Similarly, Amatuni discvered that a secnd-hand phne nly ffsets (抵消) abut
ne-third f a new phne’s prductin. Rebund effects are the cause. If peple culdn’t sell their ld devices, they wuld use them fr lnger.
In ther wrds, reuse bth extends the lifetime f a device — by giving it a new wner — but als shrtens it, as peple tend t sell their newly bught devices sner.
Amatuni desn’t want peple t cnclude taking small steps twards sustainability is
pintless. “Our intentins are still what’s mst imprtant,” he says, “but meanwhile, peple need t realise there’re n easy fixes.” He recmmends priritising verall cnsumptin reductin
rather than cntinuing current habits while trying t make them mre efficient.
12 .What is the fcus f Amatuni’s research?
      A .The ways f reducing peple’s ftprint.
B .The benefits f car sharing and phne reuse.
C .The damage f public transprt t the envirnment.
D .The knwledge f cmputer science and mathematics.
13 .Which f the fllwing represents a phne rebund effect?
A .Buying new phnes ften. B .Keeping ld phnes in use.
C .Taking care f new phnes. D .Selling used phnes cheaply.
14 .What is Amatuni’s suggestin n prmting sustainability?
A .Stp ec - friendly habits. B .Increase prductin efficiency.
C .Reduce ttal resurce use. D .Seek easy slutins t ec-crisis.
15 .What is the best title fr the passage?
A .Ways t Live a Mre Sustainable Life
B .Rebund Effects Hidden in Green Practices
C .New Research n Shared Cars and Used Phnes
D .Hw t Accurately Measure Envirnmental Impact

      Chse Optimism
Optimism and pessimism are bth pwerful frces, and each f us must chse which we want t shape ur utlk and ur expectatins. There is enugh gd and bad in everyne’s life t find a sensible basis fr either ptimism r pessimism. 16 It’s ur decisin: Frm
which perspective d we want t view life? Will we lk up in hpe r dwn in despair?
17 The way yu lk at life will determine hw yu feel, hw yu perfrm and
hw well yu will get alng with the ther peple. On the cntrary, negative thughts, attitudes,
and expectatins feed n themselves; they becme a self-fulfilling predictin. Pessimism creates a dark place where n ne wants t live.
Optimism desn’t need t be naïve (轻信的) 18 Sme f them are nt dealt with easily. But what a difference ptimism makes in the attitude f the prblem slver! Fr example, thrugh the years I’ve heard sme peple say that the mney spent n ur space prgram has been wasted. “Instead f spending $455 millin t put a man n the mn,” they say, “why nt spend
that mney here n earth n the pverty prblem?” But when yu ask them exactly hw they
wuld spend that mney t slve the pverty prblem, mst f them dn’t have an answer. “Give me a slutin,” I tell them, “and I’ll raise yu the mney. ” An ptimist des nt just criticize.
      19
Optimism distracts ur attentin away frm negativism and channels it int psitive,
cnstructive thinking. When yu’re an ptimist, yu’re mre cncerned with prblem-slving
than with useless cmplaints abut issues. 20 It takes a dreamer-smene with
hpelessly ptimistic ideas, great persistence, and unlimited cnfidence t tackle a prblem that big. It’s yur chice.
A .The gd in life far utweighs the bad.
B .We can chse t laugh r cry, bless r curse (诅咒).
C .An ptimistic attitude is nt a luxury; it’s a necessity.
D .He thinks in psitive terms abut hw t address the issue.
E .Yu can be an ptimist and still recgnize that prblems exist.
F .In fact, withut ptimism, issues as big and nging as pverty have n hpe f slutin.
G .America’s space prgram resulted in many psitive discveries that have benefited mankind.
