This mnth, Germany’s transprt minister, Alexander Dbrindt , prpsed the first set f rules fr autnmus vehicles(自主驾驶车辆).They wuld define the driver’s rle in such cars and gvern hw such cars perfrm in crashes where lives might be lst.
The prpsal attempts t deal with what sme call the “death valley” f autnmus
vehicles: the grey area between semi-autnmus and fully driverless cars that culd delay the driverless future.
Dbrindt wants three things: that a car always chses prperty(财产)damage ver
persnal injury; that it never distinguishes between humans based n age r race; and that if a
human remves his r her hands frm the driving wheel — t check email, say — the car’s maker is respnsible if there is a crash.
“The change t the rad traffic law will permit fully autmatic driving,” says Dbrindt. It will put fully driverless cars n an equal legal fting t human drivers, he says.
Wh is respnsible fr the peratin f such vehicles is nt clear amng car makers, cnsumers and lawyers. “The liability(法律责任)issue is the biggest ne f them all,” says Natasha Merat at the University f Leeds, UK.
An assumptin behind UK insurance fr driverless cars, intrduced earlier this year, insists that a human “ be watchful and mnitring the rad” at every mment.
But that is nt what many peple have in mind when thinking f driverless cars. “When yu say ‘driverless cars”, peple expect driverless cars.” Merat says “Yu knw — n driver.”
Because f the cnfusin, Merat thinks sme car makers will wait until vehicles can be fully autmated withut peratin.
Driverless cars may end up being a frm f public transprt rather than vehicles yu wn, says Ryan Cal at Stanfrd University, Califrnia. That is happening in the UK and Singapre, where gvernment-prvided driverless vehicles are being launched.
That wuld g dwn prly in the US, hwever. “The idea that the gvernment wuld take ver driverless cars and treat them as a public gd wuld get abslutely nwhere here,” says
Cal.

Scientists in Australia have used Artificial Intelligence (AI) t help them lcate a rare bird called the Plains-wanderer. This new infrmatin will help scientists prtect the birds, which are endangered.
The Plains-wanderer is a small bird that lives in Australia’s grasslands. The birds were nce cmmn in eastern Australia, but that’s changed, as grasslands have been turned int farms and
cities. Zs Victria, the grup behind the recent effrt t lcate Plains-wanderers, says the birds’ numbers have fallen by ver 85% in recent decades. Scientists believe there are nw nly 250 t 1,000 f the birds left in the wild.
Zs Victria says, “There is n bird like it in the wrld.” The dd little birds are nly
abut six inches (15 centimeters) tall. They spend mst f their time n the grund. When they feel threatened, they cruch dwn t hide and they nrmally chse t run away rather than fly.
One thing that makes Plains-wanderers unusual is that the females are larger, and are in charge f prtecting the territry. The male birds are smaller and take care f the eggs.
T prtect these rare birds, scientists first had t learn where they were. S Zs Victria wrked with Queensland University f Technlgy n a plan t lcate the birds. Since
Plains-wanderers are hard t spt, the team chse t “listen” fr the birds instead.
Female Plains-wanderers make an unusual “Om” call, and this was the key t lcating
them. The researchers set up 35 special recrding devices called “sng meters” in nine different grassy areas where Plains-wanderers culd pssibly have been. Sng meters recrd all the sunds made in an area ver a lng perid f time.
The sng meters cllected tens f thusands f hurs f recrdings far mre than humans
culd analyze. S the researchers fed the recrdings t an AI system trained t identify the calls f Plains-wanderers.
Then the AI system will lcate the birds and the new infrmatin it prvides will help scientists prtect the birds.
32 .What has made the number f Plains-wanderers fall?
A .Climate change. B .Peple’s hunting.
C .The lss f their habitat. D .Envirnmental pllutin.
33 .What can we learn abut Plains-wanderers?
A .They are large in size. B .They’re nt gd at flying.
C .They have excellent hearing. D .They mainly live n the water.
34 .What’s the purpse f sng meters?
A .T cllect Plains-wanderers’ sunds.
B .T analyze Plains-wanderers’ sunds.
C .T prmte Plains-wanderers’ grwth.
D .T bserve Plains-wanderers’ activities.
35 .What wuld be the best title fr the text?
A .AI System Has Been Used t Feed Rare Birds
B .Plains-wanderers Are in the Face f Extinctin
C .Scientists Use AI t Track Dwn Endangered Birds
D .“Sng Meters” Help Scientists Research Rare Birds
