build a dg wagn (拉车). A few days later, I transfrmed ur ld jgging strller int a tw-seat dg wagn with a screwdriver. Nw when Wendell sees me pick up his harness (牵引带) I built frm ld leather belts, he races t the dr, eager t pull the kids arund the twn at a pace that
thrills us all.
When I left my law career fur years ag, it was a prmise t my children: I may nt be
able t buy yu as many things, but yu will knw yur father. S when we nticed a few inches f water had frzen in a deserted lt, we grabbed ur ice skates and made it ur wn private rink. When my 5-year-ld daughter became bsessed with ancient Egypt, we turned pizza bxes int pyramids. When my 2-year-ld sn wanted t be RbCp fr Hallween, I made his cstume
frm recycled bttles and pieced his mask tgether frm an ld bike helmet and a wash bucket.
Creativity rubs ff. Nt lng ag, my daughter asked me t build her a hrse, and I made
sure she was part f every step f the prcess that didn’t invlve pwer tls. She helped build her wden ty hrse frm start t finish — drawing the design, then painting the final cat.

Deep underneath the eastern trpical Pacific Ocean lies beautiful reefs clred by its algae (藻类). Hwever, in the early 1980s, an El Niñ heatwave led t mass-bleaching, which turned mre than 90 percent f these crals a pale, lifeless white.
When strnger El Niñ events struck the area again in 2015–2016, bilgist Tina Palaci bserved a surprising phenmenn: sme crals resisted bleaching r shwed recvery. Her team later discveryed that Pcillpra — the regin’s primary reef-building cral — had gtten rid f their riginal algae and adpted heat-tlerant species.
Crals typically prvide nitrgen (氮气) t their resident algae and receive carbn in return fr energy. “T maintain the algae’s survival and prvide the nutrients required by the hst,
there’s a really delicate and very cmplex nutritinal relatinship between the tw,” Palaci says. Under heat stress, crals prduce mre nitrgen, which causes the algae t grw rapidly and
divide mre, string the carbn and keeping it frm their hsts. Palaci discvered that baby
crals has learned nt t vershare nitrgen with the algae. This way, they can live tgether
harmniusly. And baby crals aren’t stuck in ne place — they flat freely in the cean befre settling dwn. This helps the species mve t better waters r spread genes that let them handle heat.
Researchers als fund crals can act n their wn. They have tiny hair-like structures
called cilia that wrk like a cling system, beating fast t make tiny whirlpls (漩涡) in the
water and mving extra xygen t areas that need it. These whirlpls stp xygen frm building up harmfully in ne place.
Althugh crals are adapting, they can’t utpace climate threats alne. It’s hard t g back after a bleaching event and see them dead. That gives us the mtivatin t use whatever skill is, whatever ur passin is, t try t help.
8 .Why des the authr mentin El Niñ heatwaves twice?
A .T stress the urgency f cean cnservatin.
B .T shw the crals’ adaptatin t heatwaves.
C .T indicate the impact f climate change n crals.
D .T highlight the relatinship between crals and algae.
9 .What d baby crals d t live with their algae?
A .Sharing mre carbn.
B .Remving mre algae.
C .Mving t cler areas.
D .Reserving extra nitrgen.
10 .Hw d cral cilia functin?
A .By string extra xygen.
B .By redistributing xygen.
C .By releasing xygen quickly.
D .By changing xygen int nitrgen.
11 .What message des the authr want t cnvey?
A .Cral bleaching calls fr human prtectin.
B .Humans need mre passin t prtect cean species.
C .Cral prtectin is ur duty despite its self-adjustment.
D .Cral adaptatin is unavidable in spite f humans’ help.

Wdpeckers (啄木鸟) perate at an extreme level, bring thrugh slid wd with frces mre than 30 times their wn weight and drilling up t 13 times a secnd. Hw d they never miss a beat while head banging s hard?
It turns ut that the birds tense up their entire bdy t smash thrugh wd, letting ut
shrt, explsive grunts with each strike, reprt Brwn University bilgist Nichlas Antnsn and his clleagues in the Jurnal f Experimental Bilgy. “Wdpeckers really are nature’s hammer in a sense,” Antnsn says.
T study hw the birds tap, the researchers first humanely captured eight wild Dwny
Wdpeckers and carefully inserted electrdes int their muscles in the labratry. The electrdes fed int a tiny, fitted backpack that recrded electrical signals frm cntracting muscles as the
birds pecked. They als checked whether the wdpeckers held their breath during exertin (用力) (like weight lifters tend t d) r exhaled (呼气) (like tennis players) while striking the wd by examining airflw thrugh the birds’ air sacs — small, balln-like structures that help them
breathe in and ut. By matching these measurements with high-speed vides, the scientists tracked the wdpeckers’ taps dwn t every fur millisecnds.
Instead f using a single muscle t cntrl the actin, wdpeckers activated “every muscle frm the head t the tail,” Antnsn says. The birds used their pwerful hip flexrs t push
frward, clenched their tail and abs (腹肌) t prepare fr the strike, and stiffened the back f their head and neck n cntact — similar t the way yu might stiffen the back f yur wrist when yu hammer a nail. They then engaged a different set f hip and neck muscles t draw back.
The birds als perfectly paired their pecks with sharp exhalatins “as anther means f stabilizing their cre muscles and pwering thrugh thse strikes,” Antnsn explains. “T be able t breathe ut 13 times per secnd and inhale n the rder f 40 millisecnds is really
impressive.” Sngbirds, which aren’t clsely related t wdpeckers, are the nly ther birds knwn t s precisely time their breaths, which they d as they sing.
“Pecking is a full-bdy exercise,” says University f Alabama bilgist Nicle Ackermans, wh studies brain damage in wdpeckers and head-butting sheep. Crdinating “micr breaths” with muscle clenching and creating “this hammerlike structure in their whle bdy is such a
unique apprach,” she adds.
12 .What des the questin in the first paragraph mean?
A .Hw d wdpeckers avid injury while pecking?
B .Why d wdpeckers peck faster than ther birds?
C .What makes wdpeckers strnger than ther animals?
D .Hw much weight can wdpeckers carry while pecking?
13 .Why did the researchers insert electrdes int the wdpeckers’ muscles?
A .T test their reactin t electrical signals. B .T recrd muscle activity during pecking.
C .T measure their heart rate while pecking. D .T examine the structure f their muscles.
14 .What des the underlined wrd “clenched” in paragraph 4 mst likely mean?
A .Tightened. B .Relaxed. C .Stretched. D .Lifted.

Ambivalence (矛盾心理) refers t the frustrating and all-t-cmmn experience f being “n the fence” abut making sme change. Fr example, yu must have said, “I shuld start
exercising, but it’s tugh t find the time.” 16 Yet hw ften d we view ambivalence as sme srt f interlper (干涉者), an unwanted and unexpected radblck n the path t a better life?
17 When we lack understanding abut the uncertainty, ur ability t effectively
reslve it becmes limited. Furthermre, withut a clear understanding f the underlying reasns, we risk emplying harmful labels that may cnveniently but inaccurately explain the reasn fr
ur inactin and that f thers. “I must be lazy.” “She has n self-discipline.”
A helpful standpint fr us t better understand the rts f indecisiveness cmes frm a
research-based therapy apprach called mtivatinal interviewing. 18 Yu can als make a difference via this methd, n matter whether yu decide t eat less junk fd, lse weight, r
reduce screen time.
Frm a mtivatinal interviewing viewpint, the rt f ambivalence is related t the extent f imprtance and cnfidence in making a change. If we dn’t feel strngly that it’s imprtant t make a change r we lack cnfidence in being able t take the necessary steps, chances are very
high that we will waver (动摇) n mving frward 19
The widespread presence f ambivalence in the face f change is cmmnly present in
human life. It’s true fr us, and it’s true fr thers, including ur family members and friends, and thse we encunter and serve in ur prfessinal lives. 20 By ding this, we can mre
clearly see and skillfully address the rt causes f ambivalence.
A .And the ppsite f that is als true.
B .It’ll be prblematic if we misinterpret ambivalence.
C .Thus, we’ll feel highly mtivated t make the change.
D .Think abut a kind f behavir yu’ve been hesitant t change.
E .It’s been successfully applied t many cases f behaviral change.
F .Such internal swinging is cmmn when it cmes t behaviral change.
G .Acknwledging this fact is essential fr vercming harmful judgments and labels.

My Views n Fragmented Reading
Nwadays, fragmented reading — scrlling thrugh shrt vides r brwsing brief articles
— has becme increasingly ppular. In my pinin, this trend has bth advantages and disadvantages.
On the psitive side, fragmented reading saves time and allws us t acquire infrmatin quickly. With just a smartphne, we can access diverse knwledge anytime, anywhere. Hwever, the drawbacks are equally bvius. Cnstant expsure t shrt, scattered cntent weakens ur
ability t fcus and think deeply.
Persnally, I believe fragmented reading shuld serve as a supplement, nt a substitute, fr traditinal in-depth reading. While it satisfies ur need fr quick infrmatin, we shuld als reserve time fr reading bks that require sustained attentin and reflectin.Versin 2
My Views n Fragmented Reading
Fragmented reading, characterized by scrlling thrugh shrt vides and brief articles,
dminates ur daily lives. Frm my perspective, thugh cnvenient, this reading style des mre harm than gd.
Admittedly, fragmented reading ffers efficiency. We can grasp news highlights r learn practical tips within minutes. Yet the prblems cannt be ignred. Firstly, it fragments ur
attentin span, making it increasingly difficult t cncentrate n lnger texts. Secndly, the
infrmatin btained is ften shallw and discnnected, failing t build a systematic knwledge structure.
Therefre, my attitude is clear: while we may ccasinally benefit frm fragmented reading fr quick updates, we shuld priritize deep reading f cmplete wrks. Only by immersing
urselves in bks can we truly develp critical thinking and gain prfund insights. Let’s nt sacrifice depth fr speed.

Whenever I felt stuck, I thught f Mrs. Thmpsn’s kind smile and her wish fr smething t help her remember. I carefully tested every part again and again, making sure it was simple and helpful. Deep in my heart, I hped this little app culd bring cnvenience and warmth t her and mre elderly peple.
A week later, I presented my prject t Ms. Davis. I intrduced the app’s purpse and
shwed hw it wrked. Ms. Davis praised my thughtful idea and spke highly f my prject.
After class, I brught the app t Mrs. Thmpsn. She was delighted and tried it at nce. “This is
exactly what I need,” she said happily. Watching her smile, I truly understd what Ms. Davis had meant: cding is nt just cde, but a way t use technlgy t care fr thers.
