As a child, Janna Hernandez Rangel didn't understand her brther's hspital visits fr Wisktt-Aldrich
Syndrme, a rare genetic disease. Years later, at 16, she fully recgnized the crisis when her nephew needed the
same treatment. During this challenging time, Janna learned the prfund impact ne incredible scial wrker can
      have n a family.
Janna was at Phenix Children's Hspital when she first witnessed this psitive impact. A hspital scial
wrker assisted her family financially and emtinally during her nephew's treatment. When Janna had the
pprtunity t speak with the scial wrker, she immediately knew that scial wrk was fr her.
Nw 22, Janna is pursuing her calling—— scial wrk —— at Arizna State University. She likens her
experience at ASU t what it's like t be a scial wrk prfessinal.
“ASU is a university that measures nt by whm it excludes, but by whm it includes. Being cmmitted t
scial justice and empwering cmmunities is part f a scial wrk prfessin, and that is why I decided t majr
      in scial wrk,” Janna said.
With her experience f wrking as an intern (实 习 生 ) fr the Divisin f Develpmental Disabilities
(DDD),Janna has learned firsthand hw t prvide supprt and services fr individuals with disabilities that limit
the tasks they can perfrm in their everyday lives.
She has als vlunteered with the largest dmestic vilence shelter in Arizna, the New Life Center, which
prvides emergency shelter and utreach supprt fr children and adults. Tgether, these experiences have shaped
her apprach t scial wrk and shwn her just hw imprtant her wrk can be.
Fr parents whse students are just starting ut at cllege, Janna advises:“Tell yur children: Cllege is mre
than just classes and wrk.” Any extracurricular(课外的) activities, clubs, r rganizatins a student jins can give
them an excellent cmmunity and supprt system thrughut their time, enriching their wrldview and shaping
their idea f what they want t d in the future.

      A. Her brther's illness in her childhd. B. Her vlunteer experience at a shelter.

The cmmnly held belief that happiness fllws a U-shaped curve —— with peaks at the beginning and
end f life —— has lng been accepted. Ppularized in 2008 by researchers David Blanchflwer and Andrew
Oswald, this pattern has becme a cmmn theme in mainstream bks. Hwever, new research suggests that this
widely held view might be incrrect.
Fabian Kratz and Jsef Brüderl frm the Ludwig Maximilian University f Munich decided t revisit the
claim.Kratz nted that the U-curve didn't reflect his persnal experiences with lder peple. T test this, the pair
analyzed self-reprted happiness data frm ver 70,000 adults in Germany between 1984 and 2017, mdeling hw
happiness changed within each persn's life ver decades.
Their findings challenged the traditinal mdel. Instead f a U-shape, they fund that happiness generally
declines slwly thrughut adulthd. It begins t rise slightly in the late 50s until age 64, but then drps
dramatically. This cntradicts the idea that peple naturally becme much happier as they enter their final years.
Why did previus studies reach a different cnclusin? Kratz believes they versimplified happiness trends by
ignring that unhappier peple may die earlier, making ld age seem happier than it actually is. This suggests that
earlier results might be misleading due t imperfect data analysis.
The study has sparked debate in the scial sciences. Andrew Oswald, a supprter f the U-curve, argued that
the new research failed t cnsider factrs like marriage and incme, which greatly influence well-being. He als
pinted ut that the study nly fcused n ne cuntry, s the results might nt apply glbally.
Despite criticism, the findings are key fr plicy: The fcus shuld shift frm midlife crises t addressing the
sharp decline in happiness during ld age, pening new paths fr elderly care research.
      28. Why did Kratz and Brüderl cnduct the research?
      A. T examine the accuracy f the U-curve.
      B. T help lder peple find mre happiness.
      C. T cllect data fr their new mainstream bk.
      D. T prve their persnal experiences were universal.
      29. What can be inferred frm the third paragraph?
      A. Happiness levels peak at the age f 64. B. Adulthd is the happiest stage f life.
      C. Old age may invlve a sharp decrease in jy. D. The U-shaped mdel is cnfirmed by new data.
      30. What is Andrew Oswald's attitude tward the study?
      A. Defensive. B. Skeptical. C. Apprving. D. Casual.
      31. What is the text mainly abut?
      A. The secret t lifelng happiness. B. The reasn fr ld-age happiness.
      C. The influence f aging n quality f life. D. The argument ver the U-shaped curve.
      D
Ordinary cement (水泥) absrbs the sun's radiatin and stres it as heat, warming bth buildings and
the surrunding air. Nw researchers have develped a cement that stays cl by reflecting sunlight and
releasing heat frm its surface —— ptentially reducing the need fr air cnditining.
Fengyin Du, then at Sutheast University in Nanjing, China, and her clleagues created a cement
where tiny reflective crystals f a mineral frm n the surface. This material releases infrared light (红外
光) rather than string it.“It wrks like bth a mirrr and a radiatr,” says Du,“reflecting sunlight away
while sending heat ut int the sky.”
T make it, the researchers grind (磨 碎 ) small mineral balls int dust and mix with water. The
mixture is pured int a muld cvered in small hles. Air bubbles passing thrugh create slight
depressins where reflective crystals grw. Meanwhile, a gel in the hardened cement lets infrared light
      pass thrugh.
This prcess is highly scalable, says Du. If demand increases, prductin can be expanded by adding
mre prductin lines withut redesigning the entire system. And the cement is als $5 per tnne cheaper
than regular Prtland cement because it can be prduced at lwer temperatures.
Du and her team tested hw their cement kept cl n a ht rf at Purdue University in Indiana,
finding that the surface temperature was 5.4°C lwer than the air and 26°C lwer than the Prtland
      cement.
“It's a useful material,” says Oscar Brusse at University Cllege Lndn.“It reflects sunlight and
als releases heat efficiently.” Hwever, measuring nly the surface temperature f the material desn't
tell us hw it will perfrm in the real wrld, says Brusse.“It desn't mean that because the surface is 5°C
lwer, that the air temperature will be 5°C lwer arund it. The effect lcally may be greatly
      limited.”
      32. Why des Du mentin“mirrr and radiatr” in describing the cement?
      A. T describe its physical appearance. B. T illustrate its duble cling functins.
      C. T emphasize its durability in extreme heat.D. T cmpare it with regular Prtland cement.
      33. What des the underlined wrd“scalable” in paragraph 4 mean?
      A. Easy t develp fr mass prductin. B. Difficult t manage when demand rises.
      C. Restricted t wrking in small amunts. D. Able t be created at lwer temperatures.
      34. What des Brusse imply in the last paragraph?
      A. The cement will fail in urban areas. B. Surface cling differs frm air cling.
      C. Lcal effects are always better than expected. D. Actual perfrmance requires further testing.
      35. What is the best title fr the text?
      A. A New Way t Prduce Prtland Cement
      B. The Challenges f Using Reflective Cement C. Smart Cement: A New Way t Beat the Heat
      D. Cling Cement: A Slutin fr Glbal Warming 第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2.5 分,满分 12.5 分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 When I gt my first smartphne at 16,I felt like I had unlcked a whle new wrld. 36 Befre I knew it,I

relatinships, and my place in the wrld.
⚪The Hidden Dangers f Scial Media Use
