Our bys played remarkably well and reached the semifinals. And that was when the real game started. Students, parents, and teachers frm Clmb schls jined frces against us, saying they wuldn’t allw the cup t be taken ut f Clmb. They cnsidered it a shame t lse a match against bys frm a rural village schl, wh culdn’t even speak English due t lack f staff and pprtunities. Sme Clmb students wre leaves and danced and sang Vedda sngs t laugh at ur bys. Even the referees (裁判) favured the Clmb schls, resulting in ur team being rbbed f the victry they deserved.
A few weeks after the defeat, I met the natinal handball cach t discuss ur treatment by the referees. He aplgized and ffered t send a Krean prfessinal handball cach t ur schl. Cach Vnh arrived as prmised and turned ur handball team frm gd t great in just tw weeks.
The fllwing year, nbdy culd stp ur team frm winning the all-island schls handball champinship. Our team f 14 bys played s well that teachers frm ther schls advised their players t watch ur matches. And I was greatly hnred t have shwn the bys that dreams can be fulfilled.

Smartphnes, tablets and cmputers are everywhere, and children are grwing up with them as a regular part f their lives. While these devices ffer plenty f educatinal and entertainment value, they als bring up cncerns abut hw they affect kids’ scial skills. Experts are starting t lk mre clsely at the ptential cnnectin between t much screen time and behavirs that shw signs f autism (自闭症).
Kids wh spend a lt f time n screens ften miss ut n chances t develp crucial scial skills. Interacting with thers in persn helps them learn hw t pick up n physical signs, understand different tnes f vice, and react apprpriately in scial situatins. These face-t-face mments are key t building empathy and emtinal intelligence. By cntrast, cmmunicating thrugh texts, scial media, r gaming platfrms ften leaves ut these imprtant elements, making it harder fr children t fully develp their cnversatinal skills and emtinal cnnectins.
Sme researchers have started drawing links between t much screen time and behavirs that mirrr thse seen in autism. Thugh the evidence isn’t clear yet, jurnals like Psychlgy Tday pint t a pssible cnnectin between heavy screen use and scial withdrawal, truble starting cnversatins and difficulty maintaining eye cntact — all behavirs typically assciated with autism. On tp f that, increased screen time is ften tied t rising levels f scial anxiety and lneliness, which can lead kids t withdraw even further int their digital wrlds, cutting ff real- life scial pprtunities.
That said, technlgy isn’t necessarily bad fr kids when used prperly. Digital devices can be great tls fr learning and cnnecting when balanced with real-wrld experiences. Encuraging kids t jin activities like team sprts, clubs, r cmmunity events helps them build scial skills that screens can’t replace.
Parents can play a big rle in setting healthy screen habits. Establishing tech- free times during meals r befre bed can help create a mre balanced rutine. Plus, ding things tgether that invlve technlgy — like educatinal games r creative prjects — can shw kids hw t use devices in psitive, meaningful ways.

      30. What des the authr suggest kids d?
      A. Replace screens with sprts.B. Organize cmmunity events.

The first week f July was the httest week n recrd — yet anther sign that climate change is “ut f cntrl”, the UN secretary general said. Punishing heat waves and extreme weather events like hurricanes and flds are ging t becme mre cmmn as the climate crisis wrsens, making it mre imprtant than ever befre t prduce accurate weather frecasts.
AI is prving increasingly helpful with that. In the past year, weather frecasting has been having an AI mment. Three recent papers frm NVIDIA, Ggle DeepMind, and Huawei have intrduced machine-learning methds that are able t predict weather at least as accurately as cnventinal methds, and much mre quickly. Recently I wrte abut Pangu-Weather, an AI mdel develped by Huawei. Pangu-Weather is able t frecast nt nly weather but als the path f trpical cyclnes (热带气旋).
Huawei’s Pangu-Weather, NVIDIA’s Furcast Net, and Ggle DeepMind’s GraphCast are making meterlgists (气象学家) recnsider hw we use machine learning and weather frecasts, Peter Dueben, head f Earth system mdeling at the Eurpean Centre fr Medium-Range Weather Frecasts(ECMWF), tld me fr the stry.
ECMWF’s frecasting mdel is cnsidered the gld standard fr medium-term weather frecasting (up t 15days ahead). Pangu-Weather managed t get accuracy cmparable t that f the ECMWF mdel, while GgleDeepMind claims t have beaten it 90% f the time in the cmbinatins that were tested.
Althugh AI mdels can create frecasts in just secnds, they are unlikely t replace cnventinal weather predictin mdels anytime sn. AI-pwered frecasting mdels are trained n histrical weather data that ges back decades, which means they are great at predicting events that are similar t the weather f the past. That’s a prblem in an era f increasingly unpredictable cnditins.
We dn’t knw if AI mdels will be able t predict rare and extreme weather events, says Dueben. He thinks the way frward might be fr AI tls t be adpted alngside traditinal weather frecasting mdels t get the mst accurate predictins.
      32. What des the UN secretary general’s statement imply?
      A. Climate change is wrsening rapidly.B. Weather frecasts are becming easier.
      C. Glbal warming is a natural phenmenn.D. Extreme weather is already ut f cntrl.
      33. What can be inferred frm Peter Dueben’s statement abut the AI mdels?
      A. They are t cmplex fr experts t understand.B. They will replace human meterlgists sn.
      C. They are less accurate than traditinal methds.D. They are causing a majr shift in the field.
      34. What des the gld standard status f ECMWF suggest?
      A. Its mdel is slw but accurate.B. Its frecasts are highly reliable.
      C. It is easily beaten by AI mdels.D. It fcuses n shrt- term predictins.
35 Why might AI fail with rare and extreme weather?
      A. It prcesses data t slwly.B. Its training is still incmplete.
      C. It relies n past weather patterns.D. It cannt prcess real-time data.
      【答案】32. A 33. D 34. B 35. C
