Last Sunday mrning, I was sitting n the sfa in my parent’s living rm. Befre me n the tea table was a wrn jurnal f thin and disclred pages. It was my grandfather’s jurnal and nw belngs t my father. My grandfather had passed away in the mnths leading up t my birth. I never gt t visit the places he had frequented and the peple wh had been a part f his life’s jurney.
I was nw abut t enter his wrld, thrugh the wrds he had left behind. Within minutes, I was captivated by the pwer f the written wrds. In the magical script befre me, I was transprted t anther age when fd was an everyday art, planned, prepared and enjyed in the cmpany f thers, and a time when peple had the heart t pause their wn lives t embrace each ther’s struggles. All this was cnveyed t me in the beauty f the wrds that flwed tgether t cnnect with the writer’s mind and understand the wrld they lived in.
This kind f writing seems t be lst n us tday. We have gtten used t writing in bite-sized pieces fr a public lking fr entertainment, and hungry fr infrmatin. N wnder, there are nearly 200 millin blggers n the Internet and a new blg is created smewhere in the wrld every half a secnd. Instead f adding t ur cllective wisdm, mst f these writings reflect the superficiality (肤浅) and impatience f ur day and age.
This nt nly rbs us f the skill f writing impressive essays, it als prevents us frm explring what is indeed imprtant. Writing humbles us in a way that is vital fr ur character grwth, by reminding us abut the limits f the self and ur apprpriate place in the vast flw f life.
Writing frees us by helping us explre the unknwn s that we really pen up t the magic f the wrld arund us. I saw all f this in the writing f my grandfather. And I’ve seen it again and again in the writings f the greatest thinkers f humanity. Their writing reflects deep thught n issues f human imprtance.
4. Accrding t the authr, what is a characteristic f the age described in his grandfather’s jurnal?
A. Mutual supprt.B. Artistic fd.
C. Ppular diaries.D. Public entertainment.
5. What is the primary purpse f the third paragraph?
A. T give internet statistics.B. T blame the public’s tastes.
C. T prmte traditinal media.D. T cntrast past and present writing.

A. Writing skills ensure success.B. Writing dcuments external reality.
C. Only great thinkers’ wrks are valuable.D. Writing shapes character and perspective.
7. What is the authr’s attitude twards his grandfather’s writing?
A. Critical and dismissive.B. Admiring and respectful.

King Tut was nly abut nine years ld when he became ruler f Egypt mre than 3, 300 years ag. The yung king died when he was just 19, His bdy was buried in a tmb filled with bjects that peple believed he wuld need in the afterlife.
In 1922, Hward Carter discvered Tut’s tmb in the Valley f the Kings in Egypt. Up t nw, it was the best preserved ancient Egyptian tmb ever fund. In 1925, Carter fund the dagger which has a gld handle and an irn blade (刀片).The blade had cnfused experts because irn was hardly used at that time in ancient Egypt. In fact, it was s rare that it was cnsidered mre valuable than gld. Where did the irn fr the blade cme frm?
Arund the time f King Tut, ancient Egyptians started using a new wrd fr irn that translates as “irn frm the sky”. This led sme experts t believe that the irn fr the blade came frm a meterite (陨石).But studies f the dagger carried ut in the 1970s and 1990s didn’t supprt that idea.
That’s where mdern technlgy cmes in. Researchers used a new technique t examine the blade. They discvered that it was made up f irn and ther materials fund in meterites. After cmparing it t several meterites, they even fund its pssible match — a meterite that landed in nrthern Egypt thusands f years ag.
Scientists hpe the new study will lead t mre discveries abut ther ancient Egyptian relics, “It wuld be very interesting t analyze mre Pre-irn Age bjects and we culd gain precius discveries.” Daniela Cmelli, wh is a prfessr, said.

Have yu ever beyed the suggestins f a digital writing assistant t replace a wrd r restructure a sentence? Befre the appearance f digital tls, yu’d prbably have turned t a dictinary fr the same assistance.
Dictinaries enable us t write nt with fail-safe cnvenience but with riginality and a pint f view. While AI assistants prduce phrases and statements s writers dn’t have t think them up, dictinaries prvide us with the knwledge t use language urselves in expressive and ptentially infinite (无穷的) ways. They place chice and authrity literally in human hands, frcing us t discver hw we want t explain urselves and ur ideas t the wrld.
The abundance f digital writing assistants gives greater urgency t debates abut what a dictinary shuld be. In 1946, Gerge Orwell described gd writing as “picking ut wrds fr the sake f their meaning,” a practice that dictinaries facilitate while digital writing prgrams stifle. Writers cnsulting a dictinary make a chice, while writers guided by an app have their chices made fr them. The digital-native apprach delivers hands-ff, derivative (衍生的) cmmunicatin. The ther requires leafing thrugh pages withut knwing exactly where yu’ll end up. Withut dictinaries t prvide us with a guide t English’s ptential, writing that way is nearly impssible.
Our ability t express urselves is critical — it helps us define wh we are. Dictinaries aid us in achieving this: They categrize ur unique ways f thinking thrugh language. I’m a Canadian; my feeling f pride in my native land is enhanced by small verbal Canadianisms like “eaves trugh” r “serviette”, which are well-dcumented in dictinaries but rarely used by AI chatbts, fr the mst part.
As digital writing extends deeper int ur lives and minds, we need dictinaries mre than ever. Abandning dictinaries and embracing mechanized writing wuld weaken ur capacity fr cllective identity quite as much as the ability t express urselves.
12. What might be a distinct feature f dictinaries accrding t the authr?
A. They prmise fail-safe phrases.
B. They pssess academic authrity.
C. They facilitate creative writing.
D. They prvide ready-made expressins.
13. What des the underlined wrd “stifle” in paragraph 3 prbably mean?
A. Favr.B. Revise.
C. Observe.D. Discurage.
14. Why des the authr mentin “eaves trugh” and “serviette” in paragraph 4?
A. T shw hw AI aids us in expressing.
B. T indicate the weakness f dictinaries.
C. T celebrate the diversity f Canadian English.
D. T illustrate hw language use affects identity.
15. What can be a suitable title fr the text?
A. Why Keep Yur Dictinary?
B. Hw t Deal with Digital Writing?
C. Wh Uses Writing Assistants?
D. What t Expect frm Dictinaries?
