Preserving threatened cral reefs is n lnger enugh. Nw, we must help build new nes, say Ja Yung Kim, 17, and Jih Kng, 19. They’ve just designed ne new ptin: rbtic nurseries t attract and nurture baby crals.
Jih and Ja Yung live in Saipan, which is “a beautiful place that is surrunded by the cean,” ntes Jih. Dying cral is “nt just a stry that we hear frm newsletters r bks,” Ja Yung says. Fr her, the prblem can’t be ignred. S she and Jih teamed up t build rbtic apartment cmplexes fr baby cral.
Their system cnsists f tw types f cells. The first ffers a safe harbr fr cral larvae (幼虫). They can attach t these “cral cells” and grw. The secnd are pwer cells. These similarly shaped units can drive the cral-husing units. Each pwer cell “has a prpeller (推进器),” Ja Yung pints ut, and runs n slar energy. S pwer cells can push cral cells t the perfect nursery lcatin. Once they arrive, these cells can link tgether. A chain cnnects them t the cean flr. This ensures they wn’t drift away.
T advertise the fact that husing units have arrived, the cell sings a sng. This “special sundscape,” Ja Yung explains, “can attract the cral larvae nt the structure.”
Once they arrive, the tiny larvae begin setting up a new artificial reef. Hwever, this apartment cmplex can d smething natural reefs can’t. It can flee danger. Jih linked the cells t the internet s they can receive cean data. Their system’s pwer cells use these data t make decisins. If a dangerus strm appraches, these cells will knw. They can turn n their prpellers and head fr safer waters.
Each cell csts abut $120 t make. That’s far less than similar technlgies. The cral apartments must still underg cean tests. Mdels shw a lt f prmise. Hwever, unseen prblems culd ccur.
Ja Yung expects their new inventin will d mre than try t preserve the past. She believes it will build a mre clrful future.

      B. It is ften self-defined by individuals.
      C. It rarely leads t severe health issues.
      D. It places a high value n a healthy diet.
      14. What des the underlined wrd “apprbatin” in paragraph 5 mst prbably mean?
      A. Cncern.B. Prmise.C. Praise.D. Intlerance.

      A. Adapting t unfamiliar dietary plans.

“There aren’t any theme parks there!” That was my twin sns’ reactin when I tld them we’d be spending ur family vacatin in Sri Lanka, nt at a Disney park r beachside htel. At 16 years ld, Charlie and Thmas wanted pls and rller casters, nt UNESCO heritage sites r cking with strangers.

On ne f Ella’s hillside streets, 12 f us gathered arund gas burners t make eight traditinal Sri Lankan dishes. The grup, a diverse bunch, included backpackers, retirees and hneymners. My twins were clearly the yungest.
