Sunita Chaudhary quietly weaves (编织) tgether lengths f rpes, skilfully shaping the materials int an art bx. The rpes were nce the lifeline fr muntain climbers and were tssed.
Nepal gvernment initiatives t clean up waste materials in the muntains have increased since 2019. “At first, I wasn’t aware that these rpes were cllected frm the muntains,” Chaudhary says. “Later, I learned they were gathered during a muntain cleaning campaign. And peple like me are using ur traditinal skills t transfrm this waste int smething entirely new.”
The Himalayan muntains are increasingly littered with munting waste left by muntaineering activities ver the years. With initiatives t clean up the muntains, waste cllected is either securely prcessed if it’s bidegradable r reused if it’s nt bidegradable. Nw sme f that material is finding its way t native craftswmen (女手艺人) like Chaudhary. Slight indicatins suggest that the cleanup effrts are beginning t bear fruit.
Unlike metal waste that can g thrugh the recycling prcess, these rpes were nt able t find a way. It was nt until Chaudhary met Maya Rai at an event that a slutin emerged. Rai, wh leads Nepal Kntcraft Centre, went t the craftswmen team’s aid in hpes f helping lcal wmen earn a living thrugh the muntain waste.
While this may seem insignificant, it’s a start, Rai says, prudly displaying a dinner mat (小垫) made frm rpes left n the muntain, says the gal is t ensure that n waste cllected frm the muntains ends up in a wasteyard again. After all, they are trying t create a sustainable future.

The experience f tuch is key t babies beginning t recgnize themselves in a mirrr, new research shws, which usually happens when babies are abut a year and a half ld. “Babies pulling n their tes (脚趾) r hitting lightly their fingers are nt just playing,” says Jeffrey Lckman, senir authr f the research paper. “They are trying t recgnize themselves.”
The researchers began by placing small vibrating (震动的) discs n the freheads f babies arund 14 mnths ld, befre the usual age at which self-recgnitin (自我认识) ccurs. In respnse t the vibratin, they wuld reach up and tuch the discs. Next, researchers turned the children t face a mirrr and watched as they reached up t tuch the discs. The researchers then had the children perfrm the standard mirrr-mark test fr self-recgnitin in which a small mark f paint r makeup was placed n each child’s face. If the child lked in the mirrr and tuched the mark n their wn face r said wrds like their name r “me”, they demnstrated self-recgnitin.
The researchers als bserved a cntrl grup f children expsed t the labratry experience with mirrrs but nt the vibrating discs. The children wh tuched their face mre frequently recgnized themselves in the mirrr abut tw mnths earlier, n average, than thse wh typically first begin t recgnize themselves in a mirrr. This indicates a pssible mechanism that self-awareness can develp based n engaged experiences that human babies naturally generate.
The study challenges a lng-standing assumptin that self-recgnitin in early childhd is smehw hardwired. Fr a lng time, scientists believed early recgnitin in the mirrr was a built-in functin f human brains and thse f ur clsest primate (灵长类) relatives, rather than linked t sensry r mtr (运动) experiences.
“Interventins fr babies wh have issues related t mtr skills are typically fcused n reaching fr bjects in the external wrld and cntrlling them,” Lckman says. “Accrding t ur findings, reaching t the bdy is equally imprtant and explring the bdy is the gateway t self-knwledge.”
      8. Why d babies lift their fingers lightly at an early age?
      A. T explre their surrundings.B. T build up self-identificatin.
      C. T break their self-recgnitin.D. T engage in playful activities.
      9. Hw did the babies in the experiment frm self-recgnitin?
      A. By seeing vibratin in mirrrs.B. Thrugh active explratin.
      C. By cpying thers’ mvements.D. Thrugh wrd-related learning.
      10. What is a cmmn misunderstanding f early childhd self-recgnitin?
      A. It is an inbrn capability.B. It develps thrugh learning.
      C. It is related t experiences.D. It exists in men and animals.
      11. What d the findings suggest abut treating children’s mtr delays?
      A. Intervening as early as pssible.B. Staring at themselves in the mirrr.
      C. Enhancing external mtr activities.D. Having interactins with their bdies.
      D
In the blink f an eye, artificial intelligence (AI) has rapidly entered every walk f life, frm self-driving taxis t sftware that reads X-rays, t virtual assistants that can schedule meetings and draft e-mails. Hwever, will AI displace entire industries as mechanized factries did befre?
Like past wrld-changing tls such as mechanical clth-making machines, AI is set t reshape the wrkplace greatly. But techn-pessimists argue AI’s impact has never been seen befre. Ecnmists estimate AI culd rb 40% f jbs, with machines replacing much skilled human wrk and nte that even remaining jbs may see declining wages due t reduced labr value. Amid these wrries, 2024 Nbel Prize-winning ecnmists Darn Acemglu and Simn Jhnsn advise learning frm David Ricard’s flexible thinking abut the early Industrial Revlutin.
In his wrk Principles f Plitical Ecnmy and Taxatin, ecnmist Ricard initially supprted new spinning machines (纺纱机), believing they wuld prmte prductivity fr all. Thugh hme spinners were displaced, many shifted t weaving (织布). Hwever, technlgy changed everything: ne machine utperfrmed 10-20 handweavers, ending cttage industry. Displaced weavers had n chices as factries created few new jbs, leading t falling wages and scial unrest. Witnessing these cnsequences, Ricard transfrmed his view. His 1821 revised wrk acknwledged that factrs bsting natinal incme might als make ppulatin extra resurces and wrsen labrers’ cnditins.
England eventually learned frm the struggles f handweavers and the wrking class. The gvernment expanded plitical representatin fr industrial cities, passed the 1833 Factry Act t manage child labr, and ended the prtectinist Crn Laws in the 1840s t lwer fd csts.
The histry repeats tday. As the AI era appraches, Jhnsn ntes that AI has attracted enrmus talents, similar t the late-1990s Internet bm, but histry — especially the Industrial Revlutin — shws that “new miracle machines d nt guarantee benefits fr mst peple.” With thughtful plicies, AI can avid repeating past mistakes and build an inclusive future. When technlgy is guided by wisdm and respnsibility, it can becme a pwerful tl that lifts peple up, reduces inequality, and brings greater pprtunities t all.
      12. Which questin can paragraph 2 answer?
      A. Hw is AI t affect the wrk settings?
      B. Why has technlgy replaced human wrk?
      C. Wh suffered mst frm the Industrial Revlutin?
      D. What did clth-making machines bring t wrkers?
      13. Why did David Ricard change his attitude?
      A. The clsure f cttage industry.B. The appearance f spinning and weaving.
      C. The indifference f the gvernment.D. The suffering f wrkers and the sciety.
      14. What lessn can be learned frm the text?
      A. Every step frward is prgress.B. Technlgy makes the cmplex simple.
      C. Histry is where yu find the future.D. With great pwer cmes great respnsibility.
      15. What might be talked abut fllwing the last paragraph?
      A. Details f David Ricard’s theries.B. Plicy examples fr guiding AI.
      C. The intrductin f the Internet bm.D. The develpment f AI technlgy.
