My first year living in Ls Angeles, I was a birthday-party clwn. I struggled a lt with my identity because, I viewed myself as an artist while thers viewed me as ridiculus. T make matters mre cnfusing, being a clwn is itself an identity-masking jb.
One night, I was asked t play as Batman. At the time I had a giant mustache. But I didn’t want t change my physical appearance, because that wuld have been me admitting I was mre f a clwn than an artist. S I chse nt t shave.
The next day, I went t the party. Once I gt clse enugh fr the kids t make ut the features f my face, the entire party burst int laughter. I was s embarrassed. But then came lud applause. Feeling kind f warm, I was thinking, “Is this what encuragement feels like? It’s s new.” I was still abut 20 yards away frm the party when I started running. “Yu see, sn. I tld yu Batman has a mustache.” said father f the birthday by. I saw a huge Birthday cake with a frsting Batman drawn n it, and the Batman had a mustache. I stared at it in disbelief. That’s why everyne was laughing s hard when I first arrived, because when they brught the cake ut, all the kids laughed, “Batman desn’t have a mustache.” Instead f admitting the cake was messed up, the parents tried t save face and said, “N, Batman always has a mustache. He just shaves it fr his mvies.”

“Yur ability t recver frm struggles r disappintments, whether in yur persnal life r career, is essential fr yur success and happiness in the lng run,” experts say. It literally helps yu let g f emtinal suffering thrugh the release f endrphins (内啡肽), research shws. In cntrast, repressing (压抑) thse emtins can make a variety f mental and physical health prblems severer.
“The irn rule f life is: Everybdy struggles,” Munger said. Peple wh have the strength t carry n are mre likely t live happily, smetimes, learning a valuable lessn in the prcess. “It’s yur nly ptin. Yu can’t bring back the dead. Yu can’t cure the dying child. Picture yu’re sitting in yur living rm, windws pen. What d yu hear? The sund f a flwing river? The sft vice f human chatter in a cafe? A sundscape is yur aural(声音的)envirnment — everything yu can hear arund yu, and researchers say the sundscape can influence yur well-being.
In times gne by, sundscapes wuld’ve cnsisted f the sunds f nature, such as bird call and the sund f waves. The reality f human life in the 21st Century means that air travel, cnstructin and traffic nises are nw in the mix, and agricultural nise means that nt even rural life is safe. Nise pllutin can lead t heightened stress levels, damaged mental functin and higher risk f heart disease in humans, accrding t an article published by the UK Parliament called “The effects f artificial light and nise n human health”. Nt nly that, it can als affect the behavir and life cycles f species which rely n sund.
S, what can be dne? Urban design is ne trick. In Barcelna in Spain, urban planners designed “superblcks”, where traffic ges arund big grups f buildings and the inner streets are fr pedestrians(行人), creating space fr peple and wildlife that is free frm sunds f cars and mtrbikes. In a 2025 article published in BMC Public Health, peple in these areas reprted an imprvement in well-being, quality f sleep and reductin in nise.
Other techniques include tree buffers(缓冲), where trees are planted in urban areas t absrb sund energy. In the Netherlands, they have created earth banks next t Schiphl airprt t absrb nise frm the runways and prtect residents in the surrunding areas. And it turns ut that they make excellent sund barriers, particularly if the trees are large, thick and evergreen.
When we think abut imprving ur envirnment, it’s likely that yur mind jumps t reducing litter and air pllutin. But reducing nise pllutin is als imprtant, t create a sundscape that wrks fr everyne — peple and wildlife.
      12. What did sundscapes mainly cnsist f in the past?
      A. Traffic and cnstructin nises.B. Agricultural nises in rural areas.
      C. Natural sunds like birdcall and waves.D. Sunds frm cafes and human chatter.
      13. What is the purpse f Barcelna’s “superblcks”?
      A. T prtect histrical buildings.
      B. T increase green spaces in cities.
      C. T prmte the use f public transprt.
      D. T separate pedestrians frm traffic nise.
      14. Why are evergreen trees used as sund barriers?
      A. They prvide habitats fr urban wildlife.
      B. They can take in large amunts f sund.
      C. They are mre attractive than ther plants.
      D. They grw quickly and are easy t maintain.
      15. What can we infer abut nise pllutin frm the last paragraph?
      A. It greatly disturbs peple’s mind peace.
      B. It is the key t envirnmental imprvement.
      C. It is ften ignred in envirnmental prtectin.
      D. It affects the envirnment mre than air pllutin.

Oliver, a bright twelve-year-ld with curly brwn hair, lived in the lively twn f Willw Creek. Every day after schl, he wuld rush hme t his favrite spt — a strng ak tree with a swing in the backyard t read. But tday was different. He had a secret that made his heart race, but nt in the gd way.
At schl, during art class, Oliver accidentally spilled (泼洒) red paint n his friend Mia’s drawing. In panic, he lied, saying the paintbrush slipped. With a sigh, Oliver decided t take a walk t clear his mind. He wandered dwn the familiar path t Willw Creek Park. There, he saw Mr. Jhnsn, a retired headmaster. He had a kind smile that made Oliver feel at ease.

Oliver hesitated fr a mment but then decided t share his burden. “I tld a lie tday,” he admitted everything t Mr. Jhnsn.
