My average screen time is eight hurs and 44 minutes per day — mre time than I spend sleeping. This makes me fit int the categry f being “chrnically nline”, defined as smene whse entire life revlves arund the internet.
S I decided t change my lifestyle and use a dumbphne. Apart frm making calls and taking phts, I culdn’t use the flip phne’s features unless I was cnnected t Wi-Fi.
The first tw days f my grand experiment started n a weekend. My anxiety kicked in
immediately. I assumed I was missing ut n an event. As a result, I started calling my friends and family just t make sure that I wasn’t.
I asked Lindsay Bira, a clinical health psychlgist based in Flrida, why my decisin t dwngrade initially made me mre anxius.
“Being alne r discnnected frm what’s ging n can be read by the deep brain as a
survival threat when it really isn’t a threat,” Bira said. “It is imprtant t learn hw t tlerate the feeling f being discnnected r left ut until ur brain understands that it is nt a prblem, which allws us t self-regulate withut reaching fr the phne, and we develp a deeper, healthier
      cnnectin t urselves.”
I started calling friends t hang ut, rediscvering the lst art f phne cnversatins. It reduces miscmmunicatin cmpared t texting and makes me a better listener, helping me feel mre cnnected.
“If smene is always n their phne, they are training lved nes t lean away frm them emtinally” Bira said. She emphasized the imprtance f eye cntact, attentin, and prper
feedback t make peple feel truly cared fr.
After the week was ver, I had brken the habit f mindlessly unlcking my iPhne and pening cuntless apps fr fresh news and infrmatin. Instead, I turned t different utlets fr news at wrk, rather than simply scrlling thrugh scial media psts.
4 .Why did the authr switch t a dumbphne?
A .T reduce phne usage. B .T break internet addictin.
      C .T fllw a trendy lifestyle. D .T imprve mental health.
5 .What des Lindsay Bira advise us t d when feeling discnnected?
A .Remve threats t ur survival. B .Distract urselves with technlgy.
C .Accept the feeling until ur brain adjusts. D .Avid situatins that can cause anxiety.
6 .Accrding t Lindsay Bira, hw culd a persn’s frequent phne usage ptentially affect their lved nes?
A .Create emtinal distance. B .Train them t be better listeners.
C .Make them priritize phne cnversatins. D .Encurage a greater reliance n technlgy.
7 .Which f the fllwing might be the mst suitable title fr the text?
A .Recnnecting with nature and the self B .Unplugging fr a tech-free lifestyle
C.Creating space fr family relatinships D.Discnnecting fr inner peace and cnnectin

Online shpping ffers tremendus cnvenience but als an verwhelming number f
ptins. T navigate these chices, many f us rely n nline reviews and ratings, believing they prvide reliable infrmatin abut prducts. But is this trust justified?
Bart de Langhe, a behaviral scientist and marketing prfessr at ESADE in Barcelna, Spain, faced this questin when shpping fr a car seat fr his newbrn sn. Cnfrnted with a chice between a $300 car seat frm a well-knwn brand and a $50 car seat frm an unknwn brand, he turned t nline reviews. The psitive reviews fr the $300 car seat cnvinced him t buy it. Later, he discvered that Cnsumer Reprts rated the $50 car seat higher in crash
prtectin and ease f use than the $300 ne.
Curius, de Langhe teamed up with clleagues at the University f Clrad in Bulder t cmpare nline reviews with perfrmance reviews. They did this fr 1,272 prducts in 120
categries — including car seats, bike helmets, bld pressure mnitrs, headphnes, sunscreen
and smke alarms — which culd be bjectively assessed. Their study, published in the Jurnal f Cnsumer Research, fund a very weak link between psitive nline reviews and actual prduct
      perfrmance.
As de Langhe explained in Science Daily, “The likelihd that an item with a higher user rating perfrms bjectively better than an item with a lwer user rating is nly 57 percent. A
crrespndence f 50 percent wuld be randm, s user ratings prvide very little insight abut bjective prduct perfrmance.” He further elabrated in a TEDxESADE Talk that many
high-rated prducts perfrm prly and vice versa. This discrepancy is partly due t fake reviews and the influence f brand reputatin, packaging and price n user pinins. Only a small grup f
cnsumers — the nes hlding the mst extreme psitive and negative pinins — tend t leave reviews. This is why we ften see a lt f 1-and 5-star reviews n prducts.
De Langhe recmmends relying less n the recmmendatins f ther cnsumers. This
desn’t mean we shuld stp reading reviews altgether, but we shuld avid stressing ver minr rating differences and feel less cmpelled t read every review befre making a purchase.
8 .What mtivated de Langhe t research the reliability f nline reviews?
A .His interest in marketing techniques.
B .His skepticism abut certain famus brands.
C .His shpping fr a car seat fr his sn.
D .His cperatin with Cnsumer Reprts.
9 .What did the study by de Langhe and his clleagues reveal abut nline reviews?
      A .They were bjective enugh.
B .They barely reflected prduct quality.
C .They mstly featured neutral pinins.
D .They were heavily influenced by cmpanies.
10 .What des the underlined wrd “discrepancy” in paragraph 4 mst prbably mean?
      A .Inaccuracy. B .Preference.
      C .Trend. D .Difference.
11 .What advice des de Langhe ffer regarding the use f nline reviews?
      A .Identifying their surce.
B .Paying less attentin t ratings.
      C .Fcusing n detailed reviews.
      D .Aviding reading them entirely.
      D
Carbn remval is crucial fr fighting climate change. Scientists at Salk Institute are
making use f the natural capacity f plants t absrb carbn dixide by enhancing their rt systems. This ptimizatin (优化) aims t increase the amunt f carbn stred and extend the duratin f its strage.
T design these climate-saving plants, the scientists are using a research tl called SLEAP
      — an AI sftware that tracks multiple features f rt grwth. Created by Salk Fellw Talm Pereira, SLEAP was initially designed t track animal mvement in the lab. Nw, Pereira has teamed up with plant scientist Prfessr Wlfgang Busch t apply SLEAP t plants.
In a study published in Plant Phenmics, Busch and Pereira establish a new prcedure fr using SLEAP t analyze plant rt phentypes — hw deep and wide they grw, hw massive
their rt systems becme, and ther physical qualities. Prir t SLEAP, tracking the physical
characteristics f bth plants and animals required a lt f labr that slwed the scientific prcess. SLEAP uses cmputer visin (the ability fr cmputers t understand images) and deep learning (an AI apprach fr training a cmputer t learn and wrk like the human brain) t help
researchers prcess images much mre quickly.
The applicatin f SLEAP t plants has already enabled researchers t establish the mst
extensive catalg (目录) f plant rt phentypes t date. What’s mre, tracking these physical
rt system characteristics helps scientists find genes (基因) assciated with thse characteristics, as well as whether multiple rt characteristics are determined by the same genes r
independently. This allws the Salk team t determine what genes are mst beneficial t their plant designs.
“Our cperatin is truly prf f what makes Salk science s special and impactful,” says Pereira. “We’re nt just ‘brrwing’ frm different disciplines — we’re really putting them n
equal fting in rder t create smething greater than the sum fits parts.”
12 .What d the scientists at Salk Institute hpe t achieve?
A .Keeping mre carbn in plants. B .Optimizing the use f energy.
C .Enhancing bilgical diversity. D .Reducing carbn absrptin.
13 .Why did Pereira create SLEAP?
      A .T generate plant images. B .T cnduct research n animals.
      C .T study climate patterns. D .T track features f rt grwth.
14 .What will SLEAP help the scientists d?
A .Pick ut diseased plants in the frest. B .Cllect samples f plant rt systems.
C .Identify genes fr desirable plant rts. D .Preserve the genes f endangered plants.
15 .What can be inferred frm Pereira’s wrds?
A .Academic disciplines are f equal imprtance.
B .Cmputer prgramming is a must fr scientists.
      C .Interdisciplinary apprach prmtes creativity.
D .Cperatin utweighs cmpetitin in research.
      第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2.5 分,满分 12.5 分)
      根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
The whle wrld changes arund them: actrs, singers, mdels. athletes and TV
persnalities. If I g thrugh Instagram, Snapchat r any scial media news feed (新闻推送). I get t familiar with their lives.
16 What I can’t see is what their big cntributin t the wrld is ther than entertainment.
By idlizing (崇拜) the entertainment industry s much, we smetimes cmpletely frget abut the things that are truly imprtant and that are changing ur wrld.
Imagine if the mney that every Hllywd actr and directr makes went int medical research and pharmaceuticals. It wuld be s much easier fr scientists t diagnse (诊断)
diseases and unknwn viruses. S ifit wuld benefit the wrld s much t invest all f ur time and attentin tward scientists, why dn’t we d it? 17
First f all, we like being entertained. Mst peple might nt praise scientists because it’s
nt smething entertainment. Peple will care mre abut Brad Pitt’s upcming new mvie, rather than NASA’s mst current space explratin that might change the way we live ur lives.
18 It’s because we simply like being entertained. It’s easier t care abut simple things rather than scientific, cmplicated nes.
Anther reasn is that mst scientists dn’t like being in the sptlight. There are studies that have identified the persnality features f peple mst likely t becme scientists. 19 Even if we gave them that much attentin, they wuldn’t be s excited t be fllwed by paparazzi (狗仔) all day r get invited t events every weekend. They’re busy peple, which explains why they haven’t attracted the media the same way that perfrmers have.
Therefre, it’s very unlikely that scientists will ever becme the “celebrities (名人)” f mdern days. Even in the middle f a pandemic (疫情) science is still nt as ppular as
entertainment. 20 Studies have shwn that yung peple are mre interested in a scientific career as a result fCOVID-19. Maybe that’s the start f the develpment f a different pint f view against science fr future generatins.
A .That’s nt because we’re careless human beings.
B .They’re mstly reserved, quiet and like t have privacy.
C .Scientists seem t be selfless, hard-wrking and devted peple
D .I have nthing against the entertainment industry and celebrities.
E .Hwever, interest in science has definitely risen since the pandemic began.
F .It seems as if entertainment has becme the mst imprtant thing that the wrld cares abut.
G .Why dn’t we make scientists ur new “celebrities,” if they are the nes that deserve it the mst?
