Scientists frm the Hefei Institutes f Physical Science (HIPS) under the Chinese Academy f Sciences have designed a watch that can measure essential chemicals in bdy sweat. Their
findings were published in the jurnal AC Nan.
Sweat cntains electrlytes (电解质), primarily ptassium, sdium and calcium. The
balance f these essential chemicals is critical fr supprting muscle functin, nerve health and
regular heart beat. The watch cllects sweat frm the skin and analyzes it in real time using a
sensr chip with sensitive membrane (膜). When sweat enters the device, it will cme int cntact with the membrane that cntains three small tubes capable f measuring ptassium, sdium and
calcium levels.
Althugh they are nt the first t invent sweat sensrs, the Chinese researchers emphasized the watch’s slid interface fr lng-term reliability. “It is greater than the stability f many ther sensrs by cnsistently mnitring the three ins in human sweat fr ver six mnths,” said
researcher Huang Xingjiu.
Researchers in the study measured the sweat cmpsitin f these chemicals in athletes
running lng distances n a running track. The accuracy reached abut 95 percent when cmpared t the standard detectin methd. “The aim f develping this device is t prvide warnings fr
electrlyte lss and reduce exercise-related injury risks.”
Fr rdinary peple, the rthdx electrlyte test requires samples f sweat taken in
hspitals. The new watch has the ptential t serve as a replacement fr needles fr mnitring
electrlyte levels. The next gal f the research team is t design varius sensitive membrane
materials fr mnitring mre physilgical infrmatin. The researchers nted that cmpared
with ppular fitness watches n the market, the device they designed is larger and heavier, making it less cmfrtable t wear. Hwever, they expect t develp wearable sweat sensrs suitable fr market applicatins in the next five years. They als intend t adapt the device fr envirnmental mnitring t measure heavy metals in the future.
24 .What can we learn abut the watch designed by HIPS scientists?
A .It is the first device that can detect chemicals in sweat.
B .It uses an in-sensitive membrane t analyze sweat in real time.
C .It nly measures the levels f ptassium and sdium in sweat.
D .Its stability is wrse than that f mst existing sweat sensrs.
25 .What can we infer frm paragraph 4?
A .The wristwatch is mre accurate than the standard detectin methds.
B .Lng-distance running has little effect n athletes’ electrlyte balance.
C .Sprts-related injury is pssibly cnnected with electrlyte lss.
D .Athletes need t make up fr electrlyte lss after using the device.
26 .The underlined wrd “rthdx” in paragraph 5 prbably means “ ”.
A .traditinal B .advanced C .cnvenient D .expensive
27 .What can be a suitable title fr the passage?
A .The Rle f Electrlytes in Preventing Sprts Injuries
B .The Future Trends f Health Mnitring Devices
C .A New Wristwatch fr Measuring Electrlytes in Sweat
D .A Cmparisn f Cnventinal and New Sweat Test Methds
