I cannt remember a time when I did nt want t g t Africa t study animals.Therefre,after leaving schl,I saved up the fare and went t Nairbi,Kenya.There I was frtunate in meeting and wrking fr Dr.Luis Leakey wh advised me t undertake a field study f chimpanzees.
Chimpanzees have been knwn t scientists fr nearly 300 years.They lk very similar t humans,s they' re widely used as experimental animals in medicine and ther fields.But befre Dr.Henry W.Nissen did his first study in French Guinea,n ne had tried t study these chimpanzees where they naturally live.I fund his 1931 reprt invaluable as I prepared my wn prgram.
The primary aim f my field study was t discver as much as pssible abut the way f life f the chimpanzee befre it is t late.Secnd,there is the hpe that results f this research may help man in his search tward understanding himself.Labratry tests have revealed a surprising amunt f"insight"in the chimpanzee—the basic ability t think lgically.Knwledge f scial traditins and culture f such an animal,studied under natural cnditins,culd thrw new light n the grwth and spread f early human cultures.
