I first encuntered the classics at 19, when I studied English literature at university. But a lack f life experience, cmbined with exams, essay deadlines and an bsessin (痴迷) with gd grades, left me little time t truly cncentrate n them — Middlemarch, The Picture f Drian
Gray, Pride and Prejudice, Madame Bvary etc. I lved these bks, yet I never gt the chance t
deeply engage with them.
Sme 40 years later, as an editr, it’s nw my jb t figure ut what makes a bk tick r mre ften, what it needs t make it tick. S, when a cwrker suggested we decnstruct classics t find their “secret t lasting appeal”, I was intrigued. I decided t reread Middlemarch, which I had lved befre but never fully grasped. I did hesitate a bit, thugh; culd I, with my attentin cnstantly distracted by technlgy, handle its 900 pages f tiny print?
Nt wanting t hld back entirely, I tried the audibk instead. The audi’s vivid delivery certainly drew me in, but what truly tk me aback was the new understanding that came with
age. Themes that felt distant at 19 came int sharp fcus at 60: ideas f marriage, ambitin, and unmet expectatins that had flwn ver my yunger head nw eched (回响) deeply within me. I als nticed striking similarities in ther classic characters; Emma’s desire fr an “ideal life” in
Madame Bvary mirrrs the scial cmparisn we see n scial media tday, and Drian Gray’s bsessin with yuth in The Picture f Drian Gray reflects ur selfie-bsessed culture.
Then came the real wrk: taking them apart t see why they’re classics. Sme were easy t analyse, thers tricky, but we gave them the attentin they deserved — mre than I ever culd at 19. What struck me mst was that classics last nt fr their age, but fr capturing universal human truths; desires, fears, and hpes that never fade. Rereading them isn’t just abut revisiting ld
tales; it recnnects us t ur unchanging human nature, enriches ur understanding f time, and grws with us as we d.

C .T present impressive analytical skills. D .T highlight their lasting ppularity.
7 .What can be a suitable title fr the text?

It is widely acknwledged that crws (乌鸦) are highly intelligent with cgnitive abilities similar t thse f 5- t 7-year-ld children. Past research has shwn that they can cunt t fur and distinguish human vices and faces, and sme species can even create tls fr future use.
Lately, a special study has expanded this list further, revealing that crws can recgnize basic gemetric features, such as side lengths, parallel lines, and right angles, and shapes like stars, crescents, squares, and irregular fur-sided figures.
With the purpse f testing the crws’ gemetric skills, scientists shwed tw crws six shapes n a digital screen and trained them t peck (啄) at the utlier — the shape that lked
different frm the rest. When the birds chse crrectly, they were rewarded with a tasty snack. At first, the researchers made the utlier bvius, such as ne flwer amng five crescents. As the
birds gt used t the task, the shapes became mre similar including squares and irregular
fur-sided figures. Despite the increasing difficulty, the crws cntinued t identify the utlier crrectly.
The shape recgnitin ability f crws remains a tpic f interest fr researchers. They
suspect this ability may help them with navigatin as they fly arund. The birds may have als
develped this ability t help them search fr fd r identify ther individual crws — including ptential mates — based n their facial features. “All these abilities, at the end f the day, frm a bilgical pint f view, have evlved because they prvide a survival advantage r a
reprductive advantage,” says the study senir authr Andreas Nieder, a neurphysilgist at the University fTübingen in Germany.
In the future, researchers hpe t explre which areas f the birds’ brains are respnsible
fr their exceptinal ability in gemetry. Birds dn’t have a cerebral crtex (大脑皮层) — at least, nt in the same way that humans d. But fr us, that part f the brain is respnsible fr thinking
and ther cmplex functins. Crws still have these abilities, s the researchers assume there must be smething else ging n inside their heads. “Obviusly, evlutin fund tw different ways f giving rise t behavirally flexible animals,” Nieder says.
8 .What des the recent study reveal abut crws?
A .They can draw simple figures with tls. B .They can tell basic gemetric shapes apart.
C .They can d pretty easy math calculatins. D .They can recgnize human vices and faces.
9 .Hw did the researchers increase the difficulty f the shape- recgnitin task?
A .By shrtening the time t respnd. B .By presenting mre familiar shapes.
C .By shwing figures with different clrs. D .By enhancing the similarity amng shapes.
10 .What is paragraph 3 mainly abut?
A .The rle f crws’ gemetric ptential in navigatin.
B .Reasns fr crws t evlve shape identificatin abilities.
C .The varius survival benefits f crws’ cgnitive talents.
D .Advantages f crws’ fd-searching skills ver ther birds.
11 .What is the fllw-up step fr future study?
A .Examining crws’ brain areas related t gemetric skills.
B .Cmparing the cerebral crtex f humans and crws.
C .Explring ther cmplex functins f crws’ brains.
D .Studying the causes f crws’ flexible behavirs.

A few weeks ag, an article by Nathan Heller in The New Yrker indicated “the end f the English majr”, examining the trend f declining English department natinwide and the cultural factrs that lead students away frm spending fur years with the passin fr Dickens and
Shakespeare. Like every ther humanities-lver n a cllege campus that day, I was swept away in the mass panic. My majr was, accrding t a reputable English-majr-lved publicatin, dead.
Heller fcused n Arizna State University (ASU) and Harvard University, large
“indicatrs”(higher educatin. I initially thught he ignred small liberal arts (文科) clleges,
assuming English majr were safe at Allegheny Cllege, where students suppsedly came fr the lve f learning, nt fr middle management when they graduate. But data ruined this hpe:
Allegheny had 84 English majrs (9% f all majrs) in the spring semester f 2003, but just 20 (2.5%) nw — a 72% drp in abut 20 years matching the natinal trend.
Allegheny’s website fuels ptimism, asking, “Why put yur mind t just ne thing?” and define itself as a “safe place f learning”, unlike ASU, which sees degrees as career stepping
stnes, r Harvard where, accrding t Heller, even an “unusual majr” finds wrk. Yet campus
reality in Allegheny differs Students get lcked int majrs early, “mind ver majr” lses t clsed-ff departments, and English majrs fear unemplyment, thinking they wasted time and mney.
We need t reject the campus “disease”, Heller nted — pressuring students t chse
“safeguard paths and dismissing humanities as “hbby-based”. The well-knwn authr Kurt
Vnnegut reminded yu that the arts may nt be the best way t “make a living” but “make life
mre bearable” and “make sul grw”. Nt everybdy can r shuld pursue a degree in chemistry, but it is increasingly clear t me that everybdy wuld benefit frm spending 20 credit hurs
reading, thinking abut and discussing literature. While English majrs may decline, their lessns live n. As the nvelist Jnathan Lethem wrte, “Time change and men adapt.” Between “t
bad” and “wrst”, we can d better.
12 .What phenmenn did Heller pint ut abut English literature?
A .Students’ fading lve fr it. B .Its limited research visins.
C .Students’ cnfusin abut it. D .Its declining literary wrks.
13 .Why did the authr’s hpe fr Allegheny Cllege fade?
A .It clsed mst liberal arts majrs. B .It valued career training mre.
C .It admitted fewer English majrs. D .It cared less abut students’ likes.
14 .What can be inferred frm Allegheny’s website?
A .It tried t learn frm Harvard. B .It didn’t match its real situatin.
C .It failed t ensure students’ safety. D .It didn’t prmte critical thinking.
15 .What des the authr advcate in the last paragraph?
A .Students shuld plan a unique life jurney. B .Schls must make English mre inviting.
C.Students need t stick t their wn purpses. D.Schls ught t lk beynd practical values.

The bell abve the bakery dr sunded, marking the end f anther lng day. Six-year-ld Ana watched her mther, Elena, wipe flur-dusted hands n her aprn (围裙)—the same faded
blue ne she wre every day. Her mther’s dress, a simple grey shift washed thin at the elbws, was as cnstant as the sunrise.
Tmrrw was Mama’s birthday. A secret, heavy with lve, sat in Ana’s chest. Mama
never bught clthes fr herself. Her gifts were the warm bread n the table, the quiet mending f Ana’s scks, and the gentle sng she hummed while making bread. Ana’s biggest wish was t
wrap her lve in smething beautiful: a new dress, the clr f the sky just after dawn.
But cins were fr flur and eggs, nt fr dreams. As Elena lcked the dr, an idea started t frm and grw in Ana’s mind. She wuld grw her gift, like the seeds in the windw bx.
The next mrning, Ana became a tiny, determined entrepreneur. She gathered fallen
flwers frm the geraniums (天竺葵) by the step, threading them nt strings t make “necklaces”. She drew careful pictures f their bakery, selling them t kindly neighbrs fr a penny. She even
ffered t carefully dust ld Mr. Hendersn’s cllectin f tin sldier statues, her small face serius with effrt. Her piggy bank began t whisper with a few lnely cins.
Days passed. Her piggy bank grew heavier, but nt heavy enugh. On the eve f the

Dwnstairs, she fund her mther at the kitchen table, mending that same grey dress by lamplight.
