Jane Gdall was nly 26 years ld when she first went t Gmbe Stream Natinal Park in Tanzania in July 1960.
While researchers understd that humans and chimpanzees (黑猩猩) were clsely related, they had n knwledge abut the behavir f primates (灵长目动物) in the wild. The first three
mnths were difficult withut making any meaningful scientific bservatins r being able t
apprach the chimpanzees. But Gdall finally managed t gain the trust f a male with silver hair that she named David Greybeard. In Nvember 1960, she made an bservatin that wuld frever change the way the animals were understd. David Greybeard bent a stick and used it as a tl t clean termites (白蚁) in a nest. The ability t use tls was what scientists believed set humans
apart frm animals.
Gdall’s career track changed after the “Understanding Chimpanzees” cnference in
Chicag in 1986. Althugh she helped rganize it, the sessins she attended shwed her the
devastating effects f defrestatin f habitats and the inhumane cnditins chimpanzees faced in medical research. She tld Living n Earth’s Steve Curwd in an interview in 2020 that she had n idea f the extent f the dangers the great chimpanzees faced. “I went as a scientist,” Gdall said. “I left as an activist.” Her cnservatin effrts started years earlier when she funded the
Jane Gdall Institute which devtes a large part fits effrts t wildlife cnservatin and t
cntinuing the field research in Gmbe Stream Natinal Park, accrding t the press release. But Gdall understd that, if we really wanted t change the wrld, we must get yuth invlved.
That’s why she started the Rts & Shts prgram in 1991, nw active in 75 cuntries, t
empwer yung peple t prtect the wrld. In January 2025, she was awarded the Medal f Freedm fr her cntributins t science and her advcacy fr the planet.
Gdall passed away n Octber 1, 2025. She remained active until just days befre her death. Her legacy f research and advcacy will live n.
24 .Why did Jane Gdall g t Gmbe Stream Natinal Park in 1960?
A .T bserve termites. B .T travel with scientists.
C .T d a field study. D .T name a chimpanzee.
25 .What des the underlined wrd “devastating” mean in paragraph 3?
A .Disastrus. B .Beneficial. C .Significant. D .Apparent.
26 .Why did Jane Gdall launch the Rts & Shts prgram?
A .T establish partnerships fr habitat prtectin.
B .T encurage yuth participatin in cnservatin.
C .T fund scientific research n chimpanzees’ behavirs.
D .T train yung peple t becme wildlife researchers.
27 .What can be inferred abut Jane Gdall?

There is a saying that knwledge is pwer. Hwever, in reality, knwledge is preventin. It can ften seem that natural disasters, such as wildfires, are unpredictable and cannt be prevented, but that may n lnger be the case.
A team f Israeli scientists frm Bar-Ilan University in Ramat Gan has recently published a study in Scientific Reprts that they have develped a new AI mdel that is capable f accurately frecasting wildfire utbreaks.
The AI mdel can predict the lcatin and timing f lightning-induced
wildfires with 90 percent accuracy. This srt f mdel culd truly be lifesaving, as climate change has heightened the ccurrences and dangers f lightning-induced wildfires.
The mdel utperfrmed traditinal wildfire risk indexes (指数) . In rder t create this highly accurate mdel, the researchers integrated envirnmental factrs, data frm weather
systems and satellites.
Dr. Oren Glickman, an assistant prfessr in Bar-Ilan University’s Cmputer Science
Department, said, “Lightning-ignited wildfires are a glbal challenge, and ur mdel shws it is likely t heighten with climate change. With an imprved ability t predict lightning fires,
meterlgical services, fire departments, and emergency planners can respnd earlier and mre effectively, ptentially saving lives and prtecting ecsystems.”
While the first study ffered a slutin glbally, an additinal study frm Tel Aviv
University, intrduced an AI mdel aimed at mre lcal slutins. The purpse f this mdel is t raise the accuracy f wildfire predictin fr specific cuntries and lcatins. Basing themselves n the fairly accurate Canadian wildfire index, the researchers imprved the index fr specific
cuntries thrugh climate-infrmed adaptatin f fire weather variables. But the researchers did nt stp there. They then develped cuntry-specific machine learning mdels which they
simplified int decisin trees. This methd clcked in with an impressive 86 percent accuracy.
Lightning-induced wildfires are glbal issues, but the weather, gegraphy and lcal
parameters (参数) f every given lcatin als create very distinct and specific wildfire risks. These aspects must be taken int accunt when lking t make a wildfire preventin system.
28 .What can be learned abut the AI mdel develped by Bar-Ilan University?
A .It predicts wildfires very precisely. B .It prevents wildfire ccurrence by 90%.
C.It reduces satellite data in fire preventin. D.It fcuses entirely n lcal weather cnditins.
29 .What is Dr. Glickman’s pinin n AI wildfire predictin?
A .It has effects n climate change. B .It shuld priritize fire departments.
C .It keeps ecsystems under cntrl. D .It allws earlier emergency respnses.
30 .Hw did Tel Aviv University’s researchers imprve the Canadian wildfire index?
A .By intrducing climate study methds. B .By aviding the envirnmental factrs.
C .By simplifying its machine learning mdels. D .By adapting the weather-based risk factrs lcally.
31 .What needs cnsidering when creating a wildfire preventin system accrding t the last paragraph?
A .AI mdels’ applicatin. B .Glbal and reginal factrs.
C .Histrical disaster data. D .Lcal and public prmtin.

Music plays an imprtant rle in human emtin, scial relatinship, and cultural expressin. Why d peple enjy music?
“The answer t this big questin has the ptential t pen a windw int mre general
aspects f the human mind, such as hw experiences becme pleasurable,” says Giacm
Bignardi, first authr f an internatinal team led by scientists frm the Max Planck Institute fr
Psychlinguistics in Nijmegen, the Netherlands. “We wanted t understand whether genetic (遗传的) differences between individuals can result in differences in the pleasure that peple get frm music and what these differences can tell us abut human musicality in general,” he adds.
T determine whether genetic factrs cntribute t music enjyment r music reward
sensitivity (敏感度) , the researchers used the twin design, which cmpares similarities between identical twins and fraternal twins. Put simply, if identical twins are mre similar than fraternal twins, genetics shuld play a rle.
In cllabratin with the MPI fr Empirical Aesthetics in Germany and the Karlinska Institute in Sweden, the team was able t use data frm mre than 9,000 twins, including
self-reprted music reward and general reward sensitivity, as well as their ability t understand musical features such as meldy and rhythm (节奏).
The team fund that the ability t experience pleasure frm music was partly heritable:
using the twin design, the researchers were able t estimate that 54% f the variability in the
Swedish sample is assciated with DNA differences between individuals. They als fund genetic influences n music reward sensitivity t be partly independent f general reward sensitivity and music understanding abilities, and discvered that distinct genetic pathways influenced different aspects f music enjyment, such as emtin cntrl, dancing alng with a beat r playing music with thers.
“These findings suggest a cmplex picture in which partly distinct DNA differences
cntribute t different aspects f music enjyment,” cncludes Bignardi. “Future research lking at which part f the genme cntributes the mst t human ability t enjy music has the ptential t uncver the human gift that cnfused Darwin mst.”
32 .What is the main purpse f the research?
A .T design a genetic type f music. B .T decide n the musical abilities.
C .T find ut music’s relatin t genetics. D .T study the develpment f music.
33 .What was a finding f the research?
A .Music’s rhythm was hard t master. B .DNA affects the ways f enjying music.
C .General music reward systems determine genes. D .Music understanding abilities can be develped.
34 .Why des the authr mentin Darwin?
A .T prve animals’ musical abilities. B .T emphasize the scial functin f music.
C .T criticize his utdated theries. D .T highlight the unslved puzzle f music.
35 .What can be a suitable title fr the text?
A .Genes May Influence Peple’s Enjyment f Music
B .Music Preferences Depend n Cultural Differences
C .Music Changes Genetic Reward Sensitivity
D .Enjying Music Makes Peple Happy

After graduating frm cllege, I wrked as a salesman fr a pian cmpany. We advertised ur pians in small twn newspapers and then, when we received many replies, we wuld lad ur little trucks, drive int the area and sell the pians t thse wh had replied. Every time we
advertised, we wuld receive a reply n a pstcard which said, “Please bring me a new pian fr my little granddaughter. It must be red mahgany(红木). I can pay $10 a mnth with my egg
mney.” Of curse, we culd nt sell a new pian fr $10 a mnth. N finance cmpany wuld carry a cntract with payments that small, s we ignred her pstcards.
One day, hwever, I happened t be in that area calling n ther replies, and ut f curisity
I decided t meet the ld lady. I fund pretty much what I expected: The ld lady lived in a
ne-rm cabin in the middle f a cttn field. The cabin had a dirt flr and there were chickens in the huse. Obviusly, she culd nt have qualified t purchase anything n credit—n car, n phne, n real jb, nthing but a rf ver her head. I culd see daylight thrugh the rf in

Her little granddaughter was abut 8, bareft and wearing a dress made ut f cttn bags hlding animal feed. I explained t the ld lady that we culd nt sell a new pian fr $10 a mnth and that she shuld stp writing t us every time she saw ur advertisement.
I drve away heartsick, but my advice had n effect—she still sent us the same pstcard every time we advertised. Always wanting a new pian, red mahgany, she swre she wuld never miss a$10 payment. It was sad.
Several years later, I wned my wn pian cmpany, and each time I advertised in that area, the ld lady’s pstcards wuld cme t me.

故填 recgnized/recgnised。

该处的 shift 指上文的“The ‘Mst Beautiful Bk’ selectins have shifted _________ large-vlume wrks t
故填 the。
故填 was。
故填 that/which。
