This past year I’ve been with tw lved nes at the time f their passing. The first passing, last September, was that f my belved father-in-law at 91, after his lengthy battle with Parkinsn’s disease. Mre recently, I was in the rm when my dear friend Thmas Steinbeck passed away at the age f 72 after a lng battle with COPD (慢阻肺).

In fact, Thm tld me a few weeks befre his passing that he didn’t have much time left. While I knew he was struggling with his breathing, I was in denial. Nw, researchers based at Clumbia University, New Yrk, have an answer: taking a five-minute walking break every half an hur can ffset sme f the harmful effects f sitting fr lng perids. The team had a grup f 11 participants sit in ergnmic chairs fr an eight-hur stretch, getting up nly fr bathrm breaks r their scheduled walk n a treadmill. The exercise perids tested were ne minute f walking after every 30 minutes f sitting, ne minute every 60 minutes, five minutes every 30 minutes, five minutes every 60 minutes, and n walking at all.
While sitting, the participants culd use their phnes r laptps, r read, and were given regular meals. Their bld pressure and bld sugar were checked regularly thrughut the study.
The researchers fund that any amunt f walking reduced bld pressure by 4-5mmHg cmpared t sitting all day — a significant reductin, as ideal bld pressure is usually cnsidered t be between 90/60mmHg and 120/80mmHg.
Additinally, walking fr five minutes every 30 minutes reduced bld sugar spikes (猛增) after meals by mre than 50 percent. Walking fr ne minute every 30 minutes als led t a small reductin in bld sugar spikes. Walking every 60 minutes, whether fr ne minute r five, had n effect.
