One f my first internatinal trips as an adult was traveling arund the Caribbean. I checked int my htel in Jamaica and asked fr a recmmendatin fra lcal place t eat. The receptinist (接待员) tld me that never shuld I g int the twn because it was really dangerus there, but that t my luck — the htel’s restaurant ffered wnderful Caribbean fd.

After nly seeing fancy resrts (度假胜地), the reality was hard t swallw. The pverty (贫穷) hit me in the face. A few lcals walked t me and were super curius as t what I was ding there in their twn, since mst turists didn’t g there. I tld them I was interested in meeting them and experiencing their culture. And just like that, I was embraced.
I met mre lcal peple, had sme fd, and then we danced the night away. They had s little, yet they wanted
t share it with me. They wanted t make me feel welcme. And they abslutely did.
The next mrning all I culd think abut was hw all the mney mst turists spend ges t big businesses. The lcals have t be thankful if they get a jb that pays very lw wage, while freign businesses earn millins.
I have always cared abut envirnmental prtectin, but this trip made it clear that sustainability (可持续发展) ges well beynd nature and wildlife. D yu like t keep fit? We’re always tld that regular exercise is gd fr ur bdy and mind. Mre and mre peple are taking up activities that imprve their fitness. But is there a risk that sme f us might have an bsessin?
Well, fr sme peple, fitness has becme an bsessin as they aim fr perfectin. And fitness trackers and apps can add t this addictin, especially if smene is driven by achievement and perfectinism. And sharing data
n scial media means exercising becmes public and cmpetitive, which culd cause prblems in smene wh is vulnerable (脆弱的).
Experts say this bsessin can lead t a medical cnditin called rthrexia nervsa (健康食品强迫症) , r addictin t “healthy” eating and ver-exercise. Untreated, it can lead t malnutritin (营养不良) and mental health prblems. Accrding t a BBC Wrklife article: “Research frm scientists at University Cllege Lndn in 2017 fund that higher fitness app usage was assciated with increased likelihd f develping rthrexia, especially amng fllwers f the ‘healthy eating’ influencers.”
An bsessin with exercise can als cause damage t smene’s physical health as well. Prblems f ver-exercising include injuries such as stress fractures, tendinitis and a lw immune system (免疫系统). S hw much exercise is t much? Research by the Jurnal f the American Cllege f Cardilgy fund the ideal pace t jg was abut eight kilmetres per hur — and that it was best t jg n mre than three times a week r fr 2.5 hurs in ttal, shwing that prper jgging is pssibly mre beneficial than being inactive r undertaking jgging that is using t much physical effrt.
If yu’re mre f a cuch ptat than a sprtsman, this might sund like gd news. But fr athletes wh can’t help but push their bdies t the limit, the advice frm Martin Turner, a sprts and exercise psychlgist, is, “it’s all abut letting g, nt being bsessed, learning nt t cntrl everything, saying, ‘Yu dn’t need t be perfect.’”

    A. jgging three times a week is t much
    B. it’s pssible fr an athlete t be perfect

Many f us are learning English t enable us t cmmunicate with peple arund the wrld. But, maybe surprisingly, it’s the British, wh are nt famus fr their enthusiasm fr language learning, wh are leading the way in the grwth f these apps. US firm Duling reprted that in 2020 new user numbers glbally were up 67% cmpared with 2019, while in the UK they sht up by 132%, almst duble the wrldwide average. And UK firm Busuu, saw a similar trend (趋势) fr learners based in the UK.
But fr anyne trying their hand at a new language, what mtivates them t carry n learning when there isn’t a teacher arund t manage their prgress? Clin Watkins frm Duling said that fr UK learners at least, “peple are learning because f culture, brain training, family, and relatinships, alng with schl and travel. They want a psitive use f their time, and t d smething prductive n their phnes.”
The recent lckdwns have given us mre time t d this. Certainly, becming bilingual r a plyglt (使用多种语言的人) is a gd thing, and it helps us t bring the wrld a little clser tgether.
