Igus CEO Frank Blasé first gt the idea while vacatining n a Flrida beach in 2009.A cnversatin with sme emplyees frm a rental cmpany made him aware f the challenges f maintaining beach bicycles.The cntinuus expsure t sand, wind and salt water caused the bikes t rust rapidly.Many had t be replaced in nly three mnths.

“As all cmpnents are made f plastic, n part f the bike rusts, even the gears—bicycle gears made f plastic were unthinkable fr a lng time,” Blasé says.
The igus:bike will als help cmbat the wrld's plastic pllutin.The cmpany says a single adult bike gives new life t abut 16 kilgrams f single-use plastic that wuld therwise chke ur landfills r waterways.
Currently, 90 percent f the igus:bike is made using recycled plastic.This includes the bicycle's frame, bearings, pedals and wheel rims.Igus and MTRL believe future versins will be made entirely frm recycled plastic.
“Frm cean plastics t mtin plastics—the igus:bike cncept has what it takes t becme a high-tech eclgical prduct,” says MTRL c-funder Benjamin Alderse Baas.
The plastic bikes are expected t cme nt the market. An adult mdel, made entirely frm recycled plastic, will cst abut 1,400. A slightly cheaper versin made using new plastic and an electric bike are als in the wrks.Igus als plans n sharing its technlgy with ther bicycle manufacturers.
